Not exactly as slack being taken out should occur in a vertical direction. So if the pressure is on the heels, then the centre of mass is being shifted backwards in a horizontal direction and the bar will roll back if you apply force this way. The goal is to always maintain centre of mass in a vertical sense.
Definitely, the concepts will be the same but you will find the how it feels during application will be somewhat different due to the different positional demands of sumo (i.e you will feel less room to rock forward as there is a smaller base of support with sumo)
