      You should try Juici or SugarBee apples those are the best. They are pricey but well worth the price. I can find them easily enough here in Washington not sure if you can find the SugarBee's anywhere else.

    Most farmers' markets are closed now b/c of the pandemic. Also, grocery stores are now packaging items that didn't used to be packaged to keep multiple people from touching them. Don't apologize. These are different times and people need to just accept that for the time being. Thanks for sharing.

    • @lhmccool67
      @lhmccool67 3 роки тому +8

      Agreed! We can just try to reuse and recycle as much as possible. ♻️

    • @KellyS_77
      @KellyS_77 3 роки тому +2

      Which is ridiculous if you think about it, because the transmission risk is actually much lower outdoors. Our farmers market was closed from March to November, it finally reopened and is no “no touch”. You point at what you want or tell the seller, and they hand it to you in exchange for your money or card. There’s also a limit on how many people can be in the (outdoor) market at once, but as it’s winter, people just get what they want and leave so there hasn’t been any crowds yet.

    • @Equinox1.5
      @Equinox1.5 3 роки тому +1

      Exactly. I was thinking the same :-) We can only do our best and recycle what we can. Some of our supermarkets in Europe are wrapping things individually that were never wrapped before, too.

      Agree!! I have only been doing online orders/grocery pick up -so that means I get SO many plastic bags😭😭😭😭. Before pandemic I used reusable bags. I just had to let that guilt go! Right now I can’t help it. I WISH they would just put the items from their bins to my trunk-no bags needed!!-but I just appreciate being able to order and pick up during these times.

    Instead of harassing Jessica about buying things in plastic how about we all email ALDI and tell them we’d like more plastic free options. They’re the ones wrapping everything in plastic after all. The onions are probably just sweet onions, walla walla onions are sweet and they never make you cry. Also, cosmic crisp is a new variety recently developed for commercial use. That’s probably why you haven’t seen it before. How do I know all this ish about onions and apples...I’m from Washington

      I keep mine in a wire-framed canvas box/basket intended for paper files or magazines. It fits on my kitchen cabinet shelf (Mostly. Door is slightly ajar.) I do have to prowl through it for a less-often-used seasoning, but the common ones are on top. I bought this container years ago at Home Depot, but I'm sure they are everywhere. I like it better than a woven basket because the solid bottom makes it easier to clean and keeps my shelf from having bits of seasoning everywhere.

    • @mamakins5123
      @mamakins5123 3 роки тому

      @@hollywebster6844 Thanks for that! I can’t picture what your describing, but it sounds like it would work. I’ve been looking on Pinterest for ideas and there are great ones there. Space is an issue and I’ve been dealing with the hassle of needing to spend 5 minutes emptying the shelf each time I cook to find all the needed herbs and spices for years. But since going vegan (WFPB is proving to be harder for me, but I’m getting there) I have increased the amount of spices I stock.

    I love Aldi, TJ’s and Whole Foods. I hit up Aldi every week, along with a Chicago area chain called Pete’s Fresh Market, right next door to Aldi. TJ’s, Whole Foods and Costco, I go to less often, but stock up on the things I like from those stores. Being in the Chicago suburbs, I have a plethora of great grocery stores to choose from.

    Here's a great reuse project for tissue boxes, it is to use the colorful cardboard sides and ends and turn them into various sized notebooks, often times there's lots of paper that only has 1/2 writing on it or the backs are perfectly clean, so we use scrap paper. We made a few tiny doll books for the kids. :)

      I never understand throwing away the good cooking liquid from beans. Maybe if you're putting them in a salad, but in a mixture; I see people throwing the wonderful cooking liquid away, and adding plain water... Doesn't make sense to me. If I cook beans for soup, I certainly don't throw it away, so why would I for any food? Oh, well. To each his own.

    • @Equinox1.5
      @Equinox1.5 3 роки тому

      @@smallfootprint2961 The water in canned beans contains sugars that cause much of the gas-producing properties of beans. Canned beans are more easily digested - and the flatulence factor is reduced by about 75% - if that water is rinsed off.

    • @smallfootprint2961
      @smallfootprint2961 3 роки тому +1

      @@Equinox1.5 ... You need to back up that kind of statement with some scientific proof. If it's just "I heard it somewhere," I think you're doing the world a disservice. People all over the world have cooked and eaten all kinds of beans with it's accompanying pot liquor, forever. Start with a healthy pot, washed and soaked beans, and filtered water, and nothing is going to come from the beans that's not good for you. Maybe you should change brands if that's your experience. I have Spastic Colon Syndrome and no more gas from beans than any other food. It may take some time to get used to any change in diet, but eaten often, as part of a healthy plant based food plan, there should only be deliciousness. I use No Salt Added Eden canned beans and like to use the bean water to substitute for oil in salad dressing. Clings to the greens. Yum.

    Wow great haul for the costs! Im a vegan Canadian retired in Panama for 6years now. I live in a small town with 2 main grocery stores that dont carry alot of American products. Mainly canned goods which I dont buy processed boxed or canned or bagged if I can help it. I buy bulk beans and cook in my instapot. I only have two kinds of lettuce...boring. We dont get any fancy greens at all. Im blessed that we have lots of farmers selling their fresh produce. I make it work. Thanks for the video. I just made one of your soups yesterday for the week.

    Since you're eating a lot of oatmeal, you might like to know this trick. Wrap a banana in a paper towel and place it on a microwave safe plate. Cook in the microwave for 1.5 minutes on full power then when it cools -- it'll be HOT -- scrape out the soft, sweet banana mush and stir it into your oatmeal for a totally nutritious natural sweetener. Exquisite! The microwave concentrates the banana esters and makes it sweeter. This is also a great way to save bananas at their peak since you can freeze and save the banana mush for future use in baking and cooking.

    I enjoyed this post so much I watched twice just to feel like I was shopping because I can get out only about every ten days. Cabin fever is Real!!!
    Also it’s nice to hear your reasoning behind your choices and how you will use items.
    Thanks to you mentioning the canned beans at Whole Foods, I picked up 4 cans . My plan was to make a easy and quick multibean soup but you may mention some uses I had not thought of.
    Also, like how you point out the products from Aldi. Have not been there in years but am planning a jaunt to try some of the items you like.
    By the way, that planner is pretty. Let us know if you like it.
    You folks are doing more than just sharing about diet, it is like having friends come and visit when we can’t actually have many friends come and visit.😋
    So come more often. Even when you share you struggles it helps because then our struggles seem more normal.

    If it were me, I’d dice up a few of those mushrooms, sautéed them a bit, and add them to the mushroom gravy.
    My favorite store is Costco or “Smart and Final”. We don’t have many of the usual grocery chains in our area :(

    We're on lockdown here and can go out to get food but much prefer to get our order delivered as we dont want to die yet. Aldi is our favourite for food but the worst for covid safety. It's very bad where we are in Kent. Keep safe everyone.

    Regarding the amount you spend on groceries, about 8 mos ago we opened a separate checking account. We use just this account only for two budget line items:for groceries and eating out. I deposit $800 month into it. Now I know how much I spend on all eating, cleaning and personal care.

    @Jessica Wal-Mart has no salt added beans for .50. I shop Wal-Mart because it's the only local grocery. But Aldi is an hour away so I go to stock up once a month. Trader Joe's us 2 hours away so I go there about every other month.

    Nice haul. I don't have a garden so can't use the trimmings for compost. Hate to pay for trimmings I'm going to throw away. It's nice to buy it already cleaned. Nice to have that option... there are man wonderful frozen vegis... especially greens that I incorporate into most of my mesls. Thanks for showing us how you shop. love the whole squashes. Looking forward to seeing how you prepare them.

    Hon you do not look like a psycho! Thanks for sharing. I like seeing what your shops have vs what we have locally here in Oz
    I'm sorry people are banging on with you about packaging. You can recycle it in the best way possible. Right now with the pandemic it's most important you look after yourself. Your budget and your family. That might mean buying stuff packaged up.

    My favorite stores to go to would definitely be Assi (Asian grocery store) or Grocery Outlet! Also love Aldis too! I just get too excited when I find great things for super cheap at Grocery Outlet 😂

    Beautiful and ordered array of all the colourful plant foods on your counter at the end. Love that.
    In Australia I shop in woolworths. When I can I will go to Harris Farm Markets.

    Love your strategy of going to Aldi's first, then Trader Joe's for some specialty items, then filling in with Whole Foods. I do this with the stores in my town, too (although I'm generally searching for organic produce which is amazingly hard to find near me at a decent price). I just put a marker in my copy of Healthspan Solution so I can make that Fiesta Stew (fiesta!!) later today. Cheers!

    I have a Whole Foods and Trader Joe's about 40 minutes away from here so I don't go often.
    Nearby I have Aldi, Kroger, HEB, Walmart and Target. Generally, I can find most everything I need at those places and I save Trader Joe's and Whole foods for about once every 4 to 6 months. 👍

    I live in Northern Virginia and we have Aldi, Trader Joe’s, And Whole Foods. Whole Foods in our area is very high. We have Costco as well which is a big box store which sells in bulk..they have a nice variety of organic products - produce - fruit . The produce and fruits are very fresh. Much less expensive than Whole Foods..I’m a fan of Trader Joe’s as well! We also have Wegmans which has a great organic selection but pricey, as well.
