When I quit Karate this was the kata I was learning at the time. After I quit I watched my grandfather and cousin perform Basai Dai in competition, makes me regret quitting. Anyone still watching these and learning. Never give up, it seems hard and it will get harder but it is so rewarding.
I've just graded to 7th Kyu today. I thought I might have been too old at 35 to start Karate, but I am thoroughly enjoying my journey 🙏 These videos are brilliant I try and emulate the movement and grace as much as possible
Just like anything that takes many years to master, it's beneficial to start at a young age. However, having a late start is still better than not starting at all. 😊👍 Also, I recently turned 40 and I got 4th Kyu in December.
Definitely not too old. I trained I the late 80s early 90s and stopped. Just restarted again this year and I'm 54 later this month. As long as you have passion, you can enjoy 🙂
I'm a black belt in Tang Soo Do and I got so excited when I realized he's doing the same forms that I've learned! So awesome to see different people's own ways of doing their forms. The way each martial artist performs their forms is almost like a type of signature.
I am a 56-year-old disabled vet and a new student. Being aware of the time it takes to establish a black belt I am very grateful for your videos. Your videos along with many hours enabled me to advance two, three if you count white belt in a little over a month. I’m hoping I can make black belt Before I am too old. Lol I will continue watching and learning. Hoping you make all cars through black belt available on your site.
I trained this in Japan under a Shotokan master of the JKA. It all depends on who looks at it. If a practitioner narrows thier mind and cannot see every possible technique that the movement permits, the practitioner is limiting themself. So, wether or not that is taught as a throw or a strike or whatever, the "art" aspect is when we put our own spirit into it. Keep in mind other styles do the movement differently and so it proves that there is no black and white.
Thanks so much for all of your videos. I have been watching them and they have been extremely helpful. I passed my green belt exam in Shotokan Karate this morning!!
PEOPLE ! Forget about the Colors of the belt and Rank, and just train the Kata, Kumite-Rank means nothing it's a trophy for advancing. Your skill is what counts !!! JEEEEEEZ....19 year student of Shihan Sugimoto, who trained with Akuzawa and Okano✌🏼
Sir Laughsalot I was gonna mention how it’s surprising to see that someone knows that, but is it really that surprising? For all I know, you could be a karateka yourself.
If you use Kime all your motions become more "crisp". Exhale with every punch and kick, it helps with that (and is better for condition, too). If concentration is your weakpoint ask a fellow karateka to practise the single parts of the kata in a kihon-ippon-kumite (Its part of the test, too) :)

+jacqueline B. In England Shotokan: White, Orange, Red, Yellow, Green, Purple, Purple + White, Brown, Brown + White, Brown + White +White, Black. Then we have to suffer through the Dan's!

Shotokan goes White, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple 1, Purple 2, Brown 1, Brown 2, Brown 3, Black 1 through 10. This is the ITKF belt system for Shotokan Karate. My daughter tested for her Purple 1 on Friday and passed, graded by Sensei Rick Jorgensen, 7th Dan ITKF President of the Internetional Traditional Karate Federation, Chairman of the ITKF Technical Committee, Pan American Technical Committee and Technical Director, Canadian Traditional Karate Federation, ITKF judge, tester, and instructor.

I'm learning this kata for my next belt test. I'm glad I have this video for reference because I wasn't sure which direction to turn, and I didn't know that I should end up in kiba dachi step oi zuki punch down the middle. To think I'd been turning left all those times at home!
In Toronto, Canada is white, yellow, orange, green, blue, blue advance, purple, purple advance, brown ,brown advance, black, then masters(Im a orange belt) and to get a new belt you need 3 piece of tape on your belt you get first black then black then red then new belt but you get every time you do good
The Final 2 movements are a release from someone grabbing you from behind. The first movement loosens(or releases) your grabbing opponent and the final move can either finish the release from the opponent or can leave you in a position (should you grab your opponents Gi) in which you can finally throw your opponent to the ground. I was the dojo's ginea pig for this one, learned it the hard way. :-)
@gaiadove I agree it really works the legs. I think it's the challenge of moving in kiba dachi. It's the most stable stance, which makes it difficult to move in. And then when you attempt to do kicks from kiba dachi, it's a good challenge for the legs. In my style we do inside crescent kicks for this kata, which requires a lot of control.
both hands or one particular? best thing, as we get told to do sometimes if your hands aren't doing the right thing on various moves, is utilise something that makes you train them. e.g. keep practicing that part but with a few coins in your hand, you'll instinctively keep them shut and muscle memory does the rest after a while :)
Cool, im doing doing for my green belt too! I wish u lots of luck! Katas may be a bit stressful in exams or in competitions but once u start it, i dont care about the rest, I just focus and BAM! Either u get ur belt in exams or a medal in a competition! (But dont forget practice is also the key!)
deek77, the way I learned this kata 31 years ago (old JKA and IAKF Shotokan), it's two kicks at once: in transition from one Kiba Dachi to the next you do Mikazuki Geri (or crescent kick, in english, and then, while setting your foot down to the floor you do a Fumikomi Geri (stumping kick). Since those times Shotokan has split into quite a few separate associations (Kanazawa Sensei leads one of them), and I don't know if any of them introduced any changes.Good luck at your exam!
