      I have a mk3, it just takes a mechanical understanding of how it works and some patience to break down. That said, a red dot sight makes it a completely different thing to shoot. The black on black target sights aren't for me

      I'm not an armourer by any means, and the gun still shoots better than I do, granted, but it seems to me that the MK4's disassembly mechanism introduced a lot of play between the upper and lower receiver. Now let's be fair, if a wobbly fit is considered a mostly bad thing for 1911s (nowadays, it used to count as a plus in sandy/muddy operations) or for ARs, why would not it count as a downside for the MK4 today ?
      Also the factory trigger feels really gritty. My advice is to buy one if you plan and have the budget to upgrade it.

    The Ruger 22-45 is awesome...
    It's almost as good as my highly modified Browning Buckmark. Seriously, no joke, 22-45 is a damn nice shooter.

    I bought one of the Mark III 22/45 Lite pistols a few years ago with the silver barrel, due to a fantastic price on it. Dropped a Vortex Venom on it and am working on other accessories for it. I also have a Mark II Government Target model that I have had since the 80's, and I just don't have much complaint about the takedown of these. You do it enough, and it becomes like second nature.

      My mk 2 is collecting dust. It just will not reassemble. I never had a problem reassembling a mk2 until I got mine (I assume there is some sort of defect, but it's the same problem everyone else has). I just got a mk 4 22/45 lite. It is awesome. The upgraded takedown and reassembly alone is worth it.

    As you stated, very hard to compare the 22/45 Lite to that table of classics. But I love my 22/45 Lite. Installed a Volquartsen trigger, Tandemcross grip and a reflex red dot. Compensating that light weight with a better grip and much better trigger is the ticket. I can literally shoot dime sized steel consistently at 10 yards. The gun itself is quite capable with some shooter friendly enhancements. YMMV

    My Mark II Target got retired when my wife bought a Mark IV Target about five years ago. I also hoofed it to Academy to get my own Mark IV while they were still on sale. My Mark II is so tight I use a soft face hammer to knock it apart & put it back together.

      You know, yes there is a learning curve and cleaning the pre IV series is needlessly cumbersome. Still its not as horrible as the Internet would have you believe. Just takes some patience and knowledge. New guns can be tight, my 2 lb plastic dead blow hammer is my “Ruger Wrench” . There are plenty of nice after market support that can help reliability and trigger. See Volquartsen and Tandemkross. Great guns just need some love an understanding 🤣. Everything being equal buy the IV

    • @Salieri47
      @Salieri47 11 місяців тому

      @@agunther08My Mark 2 is as bad as the internet would lead you to believe. Disassembly and especially reassembly is way more difficult than it should be. The fit is so tight nearly part has to be beaten apart, and beaten back together. And don't get me started on having to get the trigger machanism just right (the correct procedure can be nearly automatic with enough practice). Yes, buy a Mark 4.

    I found this gun hard to shoot out of the box as well. The trigger in mine was hot garbage. So I spent some money and upgraded the trigger. Couldn't be happier. It goes to the range EVERY trip. But mine does have a holosun green dot, modified trigger, and a suppressor. One of the most fun guns to shoot that I own. Everyone always gets a kick out of how quiet a 22 can be.

    When the High Standard Victor, as well as the Colt Woodsman were selling new, I was working at a small gun shop. Of course I wasn't interested in them, they were .22s! Now I enjoy shooting my 22s, just for fun and a challenge.Thanks for covering the Ruger, maybe my granddaughter will be interested, she likes color on her firearms.

    George, my wife was shooting my old (1987 vintage) S&W Model 422 for years as "her" target pistol and she was perfectly happy with it. I use a High Standard Supermatic Citation (the H-S triggers are awesome, aren't they?) ...she says it's "too heavy". One day, a guy at the range offered to let her shoot his S&W Model 41 on which he had mounted a red dot sight. The first shot, she drilled the "X" in the center of the target. And I mean, hit the center of the "X" mark! That was it...she had to have a red dot sight!
    It isn't practical to mount a red dot on a Model 422. So we began the hunt for a replacement that could easily mount a red dot. We didn't have any particular budget limits, and I told her to get a Model 41 if she wanted. No, "too heavy".
    One day we went to an indoor range with a gun shop and she was browsing around and picked up a Ruger MKIV .22/45 Light. That was it! She got her new pistol, we handed the old Model 422 off to one of our sons for the grandkids to shoot, mounted a red dot on the .22/45 and she has been happy ever after. (Hers is all black)
    And from a sandbag rest at 25 yards it is remarkably accurate. 🤷‍♂ They are really a good value!

    I recently bought the same pistol and I’m hitting a steeper learning curve from when I started shooting my High Standard Victor. The Victor is such a great pistol, it seem unfair to compare it to the Ruger. With that said, I learned to shoot on a Ruger Mk1 and the Mk4’s trigger seems really different to me. Like you said, you can learn to shoot anything, so I’m looking forward to more range time with the Mk4.

    I've got a Ruger Mark IV Standard with a 6 inch barrel. It is a great plinker, the take down is brilliant, and I love the Luger style profile.
    Ruger released the Standard in 1949 and that was the beginning of what would become their Mark line of pistols. That being said the origins of these pistols began in Japan with the Nambu pistol. After the Second World War Bill Ruger bought two Nambu pistols from a returning Marine, and he evolved them into what would become the Ruger Standard. So one can reasonably say the Ruger Mark IV is the current ultimate evolution of the Japanese Nambu pistol. And the impact of those two Nambu pistols cannot be overstated because they helped to bring about all the great guns Ruger developed.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  Рік тому

      I appreciate your insight. I've never heard about the two Japanese pistols. But, it makes sense when a designer springboards off of a previous great idea. I did that a lot in my own time as a design engineer and there's nothing wrong with it.

      @@TargetSuite You are welcome. It is a neat part of the Ruger story, and goes to show that Bill Ruger was a truly brilliant engineer in that he was willing to stand on the shoulders of others and evolve the excellent Ruger Mark series of pistols. I think the Ruger Mark IV series of pistols with their ease of takedown, strong aftermarket, and popularity has a very strong claim to being the greatest .22 pistols ever made.
      As to grip angles it is just I love the Lugeresque profile of the Ruger Standard. It has excellent lines with the pencil barrel and holds its own in looks against my 1911 and Browning Hi-Power.

    Before you put the red dot on, I’ll guarantee you that the rail will come loose. Mine came loose after two magazines with the factory dovetail and screws. The problem is you have steel screws going into an aluminum receiver (they can’t be torqued enough without risk of stripping). I recommend red, yes red Loctite. The blue won’t hold for long. The red might not hold either, I’m running a dovetail mount now. With at least 5k rounds through mine, that’s been the only issue.

Standard 6.88 tapered barrel and has a rear adjustable sight, windage and elevation. Nice walnut grip. Drilled and tapped for a rail that I will never use...... I was named after Mark VII Limited. I had no idea that CCi standard velocity was 10K fps. Those things are screaming. As for the Mark series Rugers. I have three of them and all three are the Mark III so taking them apart literally requires a hammer. One is a Lite model and I just can't shoot that one well. Now I have a 22/45 Target and it shoots great. I love that one. The last is a stainless with a red dot and it too is a target, just not the 22/45 version. It has a little bit longer barrel too. Really love the 22/45. Never shot the "lite" versions, but I always wanted one. All the others are great guns too though. There's a channel where a guy got like a dozen of the most popular 22lr plinking handguns (mostly SA like the Rugers, the Buckmark, Neos, SW Victory, etc...)... and tested them all with like 20 different kinds of ammo... and of all of them there was only two that fired every single round (including subsonics)... and there was two that shot everything except the subsonics. The Riger 22/45 (Ruger Standard) was one of them. I think it was one of the one's that shot every round including the subsonics, but at the very least I'm certain that they were one of the one's that fired all the standard velocity and high velocity ammo. I actually really wish I could find that video, because I really want to know which guns were the most reliable, because I can't remember except for the Ruger.

    Good video. I would agree with your thoughts on the MK IV lite. I find it the hardest to shoot accurately of all my full sized.22 pistols (to include other full weight MK Iv's and my own Buckmark contour). It's jsut to light and short in my opinion. I find the MK IV 5.5" target version ( or 5.5" Buckmark) is a much better pistol all around.

    The short sight radius doesn't help. Being intended as a 1911 training aid, that trigger didn't get the memo. That rail yearns for a red dot and it'll make for some nice videos. Maybe if you get a .22lr conversion kit, you could make a video on the choices one has for affordable training and if the reliability is there. With our local laws, conversion kits are popular since it's almost no paperwork.
    From the table, no matter the round count, I'd take the Model 41.

    I have two of them and initially regretted the purchases (rather shoot a basic sr22). They really are blah out of the box. Trigger is embarrassingly bad. Please consider them a platform, not out of the box good. Lack of capacity stinks too. Modify them with a VQ trigger kit and TK trigger shoe.. fit an optic, better TK grips and WOW - cannot even recognize it and how it should have been factory. One of my favorite target toys now! But like I said... if you are hoping for something amazing out of the box and do not have the means to upgrade them, there are a LOT better options on the market.

With the 22/45, I was having a hard time hitting the bullseye at 10 yards. I wonder why the difference. Is the extra couple of inches in the barrel really the only factor?

    I don't consider any of those other guns to be in the same standard as the Ruger Mark IV Lite. I would rate the trigger on Buck Mark as being "better" and the Model 41 is not even close to being in the same class. I don't have the High Standard, so I know not much about that gun. I like almost all of my .22's, with the exception of a few that are just pocket guns that are barely "decent" .. I still like my 22/45's for the grip angle as well. For someone with weaker hands, the 22/45 is much closer to ideal.
    The main selling point of the Ruger Mark IV 22/45's tends to be the threaded barrel. The other gun that is a good alternative to the Ruger Mark IV 22/45 Lite is the S&W Victory; better trigger, heavy steel barrel, fiber optic sights, some come factory threaded. I find the longer sight radius and heavy steel barrels to make it easier for more precision shooting. I am not a fan of plain black target sights however.
