  • Occasionally I have the need to get in the water for a few certain shots when working on commercial shoots or TV programs.
I've owned underwater housing set-ups in the past but in recent years, I've mostly just reached for the GoPro when I needed a quick bit of underwater footage.
A few months ago I looked for an affordable waterproof housing to give me a bit more control and variety that the typical GoPro fisheye look, and came across the Seafrogs a6xxx Series Salted Line housing.
It's a camera housing made to be used underwater and in the surf for Sony's a6000 line cameras, (a6100, a6300, a6400, a6500), and also happens to be one of the cheapest water housings available.
I ordered one but unfortunately the Covid-19 pandemic brought all my work to a screeching halt so I haven't been able to use it all that much for paid shoots. Instead, I decided to test it out a bit on some fun shoots and do a little bit of a review.

Hey love the video!! What are your video settings set too for your camera when shooting these clips? I would like to preset my camera to the settings you used .

Thanks Blake! I shoot everything in the water at 100p or 120p which means you don't have to follow the 180 degree shutter rules as much, so I usually shoot wide open and control exposure with the shutter speed. The AF seems to work better wide open, I'm guessing because there's more differentiation between the in and out of focus areas so it's easier for the camera to figure it out. Other than that it's mostly about being in the right place at the right time, and also licking/rinsing your port regularly, and dunking it just before you start recording to remove water droplets.

Hi, great video! I can see this channel is pretty fresh. I got the same Housing paired with the a6400 like you did, but I'm only limited to the 16-50 kit and 28-70 kit lens.
In your sample footage, what lenses did you use? Loving the output!

Hi Eric, I'm just using the 16-50 kit lens. I only ever use my a6400 in the water so can't justify buying expensive lenses just for that purpose. I'm thinking about getting something longer though like the 55-210mm. All my other lenses & cameras are EF mount.

@@wileyvisuals5714 that's interesting, it seems a bit of telephoto than what I get. What focal length was most of it shot in? Or is it because of the flat dome port refraction? I use the 6" dome port which might make a difference.

@@Erik.N.K I find I'm usually shooting at 50mm. I think the camera crops in slightly in 120p as well so that might account for the different look. The dome port should only make a difference underwater as I understand it, they should be pretty close above the water.

The lens port and zoom gears are swappable so there are various combinations available for different lenses. When I purchased the housing it gave me the option to select my lens so that they can provide the correct zoom gear. You can check on their website to see lens compatibility.

@@wileyvisuals5714 Thanks for this info man. Do I need to use the zoom ring for prime lenses? Just want to make sure and last question, do I need to use the anti fog sheets that comes with it?
