- Runnin' Around and Devil In My Car are the two numbers from The B-52's 1978 Downtown Cafe show not included on their eponymous debut album but later released on their second album, Wild Planet.
These videos are EXCELLENT!!! My mother always played The B-52's when me and my sisters were little, we grew up on this stuff. How many other kids in the 70's had mothers that came home from B-52's concerts with their beehives on the side of their head from dancing so much and having a good time??? We did!
Ricky Wilson was a guitar genius and with 4 strings!
he did that on purpose so it would be easier to play
Rickys screaming Mosrite gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, Turn it up!!!
It's amazing how far ahead of their time they were. 1978!! ....Disco was still full blast at that time. They ust have been considered weirdos..I love it.
I still play this stuff and enjoy it!!!
Great post
Thank you so much for posting these amazing videos. Love the raw sound. No one else is like them, and no one ever will be.
One of the few groups that were so retro yet so futuristic. Amazing.
Like how raw and punk The B-52's were
more like new wave
For me, this is, by far, the most, underrated song , by the , b, 52, ',s,
That's awesome you got a lively crowd getting their dance on
Thank you Ms. Mills...this is a real treasure trove you've given us.
I was there! What a night! Their first show outside Athens that I know of. As sweet as life gets with clothes on....
Hippie in the front with glasses?
I used to say that about surfing lol. The most fun you can have with your shorts on 👍😁!
Awesome
best time of my life! tku b-52`s, still feeling it! # 1 fan!
Holy crap! Thanks for posting this is cool as sh*t to see this authentic footage... no staged video crap, pure live energy vibe, raw energy
That is what it was like at every club/concert in the late 70s and early 80s.
This was before the band hit it big. Love the really raw sound here. The B-52's first two albums are their best material. I have hot heard any of their material past that.
Ricky wilson smashin it
Secret PixelMan 2:27 Crunch that shit.
funny to think that this underground, ( at the time ) ...beats almost over 95% of everything that is considered mainstream pop nowadays. So raw....so powerful and at the same time very simple and minimalistic. Hot lava and devil in my car ... just blew my mind off...first time l heard.
Ricky, may you be resting in peace, and I thank God every day that I had met you in Atlanta that weekend.
May your soul and talent infect a newborn thi very night!

Ricky's style was unique, gut wrenching.....goosebumps.
a lot going on in their music... surprisingly tight...
Wow!, It's pretty whack to think that Kate Pierson was already 30 yrs old when they did this gig., but you should SEE HER TODAY at age 66..WHOA.. she is still HOT as hell. The B-fer's was one of the reasons I left Detroit in 1981...heading to God knows where,, (actually, Miami, FL.) and along the way, stopped off in Athens to wistfully imagine running into them on the streets of Athens, only to find out they had just played their Hometown a few nights earlier.
This vid is a great (audio wise) recording. Thanx kmils74
That's the thing. These guys didn't really break big nationally til the 80's so everyone thinks of them as being younger than they are, but these guys are as old as like the guys in Led Zeppelin or that era. I mean Kate was born in 1948 just to put things in perspective. Hellava group though. Rocks it as hard as ever.
That’s an amazing point that blows my mind. It took five or six years before they were recognized, and another decade before they received worldwide mainstream success. To put that into perspective Paul McCartney was 28 when the Beatles broke up. That’s insane!
I agree with you
Bit like AC/DC rocking in the 70s now in their 70s rocking
This Rocks!!!
such charismatic music
The early 60s top Kate the keyboardist is wearing is the same top she's wearing on the cover of their "Wild Planet" LP.
Najlepsza wersja ze wszystkich jakie widziałem i słyszałem!
Kate's wearing the same blouse she wears on the cover of Wild Planet.
Rick Wilson: UNLEASHED! Thats solo is a musical Johnstown flood. Mark Ribot eat your heart out!
gawd 2:27-2:37 is so good 👌🏻🔥
Ricky Wilson's guitar work amazes me, considering that he played it with the two middle strings missing. I'm curious as to how he tuned the remaining four strings. Does anyone out there know?
Thank You for posting these videos!!
run fred run
Good to hear the girls singing improved over the years :)
These vids are pretty cool. I'm surprised at how serious they are
between songs... it's very much like they are there to perform the
songs, and not have fun at the same time. lacking spontaneity even.
Once again great footage
brilliant
You are right. I am sorry:I meant to use the word "be inflected on a newborn this very night.
My apologies.

French Stewart is great on lead vocals!
It took five or six years before they were recognized, and another decade before they received worldwide mainstream success. To put that into perspective Paul McCartney was 28 when the Beatles broke up. That’s insane!
incroyablement émouvant
His guitar only had 4 strings.
Correction: Kelly Mills was from Georgia State University In Atlanta, not UGA in Athens (home of the B's).
Maybe I'm just drunk, but they remind me now of a better mannered and humored Gun Club. Love 'em both don't get me wrong.
This stuff is awesome ! where the hell did you get it ! Such a rare glimpse of seeing them perform before they were famous. Thank you so much.
Fred is like a bizarro Jello ... or is that the other way around?
they have such wierd,funky song titles,but i like`um
i would give anything to have been there
Oh...BTW...DEFKONSIXTYSIX's observation of the likeness of Jello & Fred is dead-on. Hahaha.
Vintage
I believe these are clips from University of Georgia archives. Some guitar experts below explain how Ricky modified his guitar to create the surf sound, precursor to grunge. The death of Ricky Wilson to AIDS in 1985 was a great loss to the B's but rock gained so much.
wow, this is that old? ive always loved this song but thought it was from the early to mid 80's
Ricky was an amazing guitarist but IMHO he didn't spawn grunge. Sure, The B-52's influenced Kurt Cobain but I think The Wipers were a much bigger influence. Listen to any of their songs, even from their first album (From 1980) And I'm sure you'll agree.
Call me crazy, but I'm totally convinced that Ricky Wilson invented Grunge sound with his guitar style.
you're crazy
@blueberry72 sometimes french stewart reminds me of fred schnieder too
B52-godverdomme!
Thanks for the help. Just curious how did you get the information? Also, do you know the gauge of each string? Tuning down might cause strings to be too loose.
What's the point of disabling embedding?
Pienso igual que Gabriel creo que Ricky Wilson invento el Grunge Sound.
You wrote a beautiful sentiment... maybe "infect" wasn't the word to use, though.
If anyone has this song on an album i beg you bang it up. Nott's has the shitest music shops p'on road. NO B52'S!!
cocaine is a helluva drug
Quel éclate ce morceau ,very good....
