Degroot keep is probably one of the best maps to practise movementes on, once you've mastered it, it'll be easier to pull of those matadores/starfe 'n' snaps.
dude when i was a newer spy, and i was trying to practice there i couldnt even get out of the gate, 8 snipers with huntsman, not even the old DR saved me from that.
I don't play spy anymore, as I don't really enjoy it, but the trick you mentioned of making yourself seem "blind" as to the enemy's whereabouts is something huge that I somewhat developed for my own playstyle back then. It completely disarms them in that most players automatically default to their most predictable mindset, that of a new player playing pyro; gotta get the kills, they don't see me - I'll run in a straight line to catch up to them. This sort of *spychological (hue) disarming is absolutely awesome, and unlike most things that spy mains love to boast about - overhead stabs, hakuna matatador stabs (hue) - I still definitely respect this level of game sense and control.
Before, "OH LOOK, I'LL STAB AND IT'LL KILL HIM!!" *gets kill* Now, "Oh, this guy seemed to know these trickstabs, but he's sure loves to walk in straight lines, oh, I know! I'll bait him into here and bla bla bla and..." *gets kill* See how this game evolved. From mindlessly getting kills to somewhat brainstormed knowledge just to take out someone.
JoNarD LoLz just because everyone use dead ringer ,it's a 1 button "haha you cant kill me "watch, people spycheck everything, burning everywhere to try to avoid getting killed, making disgist useless and make IW,CnD spies cannot survive,if you have a DR spy teammate, dont play spy.
Amazing video, this is just what I've been trying to tell people countless times ask me stuff like this. Spies these days see tricks and try to perfect them before learning the basic ideas of spying. If you are new to the class and want to be "as good as" (since everyone has their strengths) Slurgi, stabby, et cetera, you need to take it one step at a time. Slurgi and stabby both started out with absolutely no "trickstabs." They learned the general idea of spying before moving on to try advanced tactics. This is also the reason why "trickstabs" and spying in general have so much hate from other players; all they see are wannabes who skip ahead in the first step of learning to spy.
great video. Way too many spies start learning the so called "advanced part" of spying by learning the certain trick stabs by muscle memory and so become extremely predictable. More people need to understand that trick stabbing is about understanding the mechanics and more importantly how others think, fully and then adapting to different situations. Anyways, great video.
When I saw your stream about movement I immediately went to try it out and by god it helped so much. I got all kinds of trickstabs more reliably and was able to juke out my own teammates in degrootkeep with the half-zatoichi. These kinds of videos and commentaries are why you're my favorite spy out of all. You go beyond the trickstabs and explain way more than that. And it really helps. I've looked at Stabby again afterwards and while he does have the good movement, he doesn't touch upon it once. As if he's not even conscious about it.
Russell Leck Hei and acooma are plat spies just like stabby, And they are fucking better than him you should check them out.Stabby Stabby is so overrated ugh!
something that I do when performing blind stabs such as corner stabs in which you and your opponent lose sight of each other, or blind stair stabs. Is something that I feel helps me out a lot, which is to visualize where the player is based on how fast they are moving after the last time I saw them. luckily for me, even though I am not even remotely good at trickstabs, getting the timing down right for blind stabs is something that seems to have come naturally to me, which i'm thankful for.
I would like more videos like this. I'm not a fan of the glorification of trickstabs but I can appreciate the effort that goes into them at this level. Cheers.
OG fan here, this has to be one of the best and deepest explanations in what a Spy can do. *Psychology* is something really interesting when it comes to trickstabbing, if you're able to master spying in psychology, you're the master puppeteer, you control your opponent's movement with your movement and idea. I stopped playing tf2 since it kinda got fucked lately over the years, but i've had really good experiences and found many things that really do work as to what Slurgi says. You gotta be flexible with new ideas ON THE SPOT, you must improvise, improvise improvise improvise, that is such an important thing you must master (with game experience) in order to achieve survivability and problem solving at any given situation, because every given situation is different. *Blind metador*, this is something i've created, and i'm glad slurgi didn't know of this so it's nice that I made something that could fit spy trickstabs, making this my trump card and also making it work 100% of the time regardless if you're against a spy main. The blind metador works like this: enemy ahead, turn your back on them, already they have an implication that they can get a hit on you straight on without anything to worry that you might trickstab them, at that moment, they've been trickstabbed, why? Because they're in a realisation that you can't see them, you make them BELIEVE SOMETHING THAT ISN'T REAL, which is something Slurgi says I think. Anyway, you turn your back, and just do a metador strafe as your back is turned to the enemy, now ofcourse you're gonna need gut feelings as to where exactly and speed the enemy is approaching you from behind but this trick is really for much more experienced players. So, with the back turned, you move right (D) then move left (A) while already moving left, the enemy is turned to you when you turned right, when you move left, you quickly turn your mouse towards the enemy and stab, and bam, a blind metador, I've done these alot and they worked amazingly. Slurgi is #1 spy in tf2, he's a trickstabbing legend, really sad he barely uploads because of real life issues, I have seen him uploading on like a weird site, but why there and not here right? Lastly, my tips are going to 100% come from Slurgi because, well... he's my master like for any of us, movement, psychology... everything works, spy is just an amazing role with so much potential then we didn't see. I think my only tip that comes from me is... Be open to new ideas in a situation you're in, use your enviroment. Be the Jackie Chan of tf2.
I think the main reason I’ve always loved watching Slurgi is this right here. In a game full of psychological warfare pertaining rage and ignorance, Slurgi relaxes and doesn’t argue back, knowing he’ll just casually trick them to death later.
I am not going to lie, you are one of the best spies I've seen, and this is one of the best tutorials I've ever seen, you put things in a complex way, where it's still 'meaningful'
I can't mention how much this video helped me improve a bit of my movement and work on my "feel" for my trickstabs. Backpedaling has saved my ass several times. Just today even, I got a stab on a Fish Scout who was being a nuisance to our team by meleeing them with hit and runs. He traveled in the area between 2nd and Mid on Granary on our side. I figured he'd make a circle in an attempt to escape by going towards our drop-down chute. He rounded the corner sharply, and I was ready with a corner-stab without seeing him for close to 10 seconds.
This is... enlightning . I totally have have to say you exposed a few concepts that changed my perspective on what spy can achieve . Really an excelent work !
You know this is why when I go against a good Spy (or any good player) as any other class I always do the worse possible thing at that moment, because who would expect me to that? (Yeah, I have a problem with being overly paranoid in TF2 when it comes to situations or assuming enemy skill levels, but if I always assume the worse then I'm right or I get a pleasant surprise when it isn't so bad.) I liked this video as you slowed it down and went over the same stabs a few times, explaining how and why you did it (Yes, I just stated the obvious.) A simple thing, but all those frag like videos make it hard to focus when I have to replay the same 4 seconds again and again.
Today everyone is so aware of trickstabs that they don't even come close, like pyro he keeps air blasting. engineer keeps using gun its hard to get trickstabs
anyone, and I mean anyone, who comes within melee range of a spy can (and should) be trickstabbed. Granted let that be a last resort, but as a spy, its all about how you adapt so that your play style overcomes that of your opponents. NEVER GIVE UP!! *stares off into the distance
watch the start of the video when slurgi said the type of spies who only know how to trickstab and nothing else about spying meets the player who can counter them and tell me if ur assumption is right
He moves so early, before the enemy knows what's coming, by acknowledging the enemy knows where he is, and moving in a new direction just as the enemy sees him. You can see this at 9:12 to 9:48 and this seems like lightning fast movement, but it is practice of knowing when an enemy will see you. Spy is interesting in 1v1, and these concepts may be able to be transferred to other classes. As scout, you could become invisible by using this as you may move fast enough to get out of an enemies FOV entirely by moving when you think that he sees you. Good luck with this though, you might have to spend years practicing this... Just wow Slurgi, these concepts are amazing.
Just like trickstabbing, it took the creator of these trickstabs years before he publicly showed it to us. He was recognized as the Father of Trickery. So, if you managed to replicate Spy's movement to other classes, then that's another wonder.
Ode to Animosity Sorry for this late reply, but if you're still curious on who the real trickstabber was, search up SubtleArt. He first introduce the dropstab, then the stairstabs. OMFGNinja introduced these trickstabs to his Spy tutorial and thus the trickstabs became popular. But SubtleArt died in real life. RIP
Thanks for this video, I was already aware of most of these things but you helped me understand them better and feel more comfortable with the concepts, so thank you! Keep up the great work!
They are all spy mains. It was during a stream. Slurgi asked someone to go medic so he could demonstrate how to dodge the average medic in a normal mode. No one was actually playing the map seriously. It was for demonstrative purposes.
Nice vid! You know, you are one of my favorite spies when it comes down to really weird trickstabbery, if not the best. You may not be competitive, which I really only like to watch spy gameplay from (excluding a few really good pub spies), but seeing those ridiculous stabs I've never thought of (Jumping to a sentry and using it to improv stab someone who's running DOWN stairs) just makes me laugh. After that I go on a pub and try something ridiculous too, and whaddya know, it works out. I had been letting out that "risk-taker" attitude of me (my comp-carefullness transferred over to pubs a bit :s), thanks for bringing it back c;
Your Videos help me so much. I thought that you go but you are still here. You and Zeigon are the reasons that the most of my stabs work! Thank you Slurgi. :D
I love how professional spy players are, they take spy to the next level, and another after that. It's crazy how their mind works. Heh, I'm just mindlessly M1ing and M2ing all my other classes, and for spy, i never really try anything other than the basics. Faking the players out and jump stabbing, too much work for me xD
When you get a trickstab it's just really rewarding as he said and its a ton of fun, and theres nothing wrong with being known as an awesome spy for your trickstabs :P
Note that Slurgi uses a really high sensitivity, probably around 3 inches per 360, and this allowed him to stairstab much easier and makes him feel powerful. It's why he can't flick ambassador like most people, he has to strafe and keep his crosshair at head because his sens is so incredibly high. All good spies have at least 4 inches per 360.
+mazoadong Not exactly true. Sensitivity is not fixed. Stabby uses a script that changes his sense from gun to knife. That way, you can do crazy stabs, and pull off sick headshots all the time.
The medic with the ubersaw might have hit slurgi if he swung before coming in range. The 0.25 second swing time helped with dodging, as the medic swung when he came into range.
Best thing you can do is never keep your eyes off the spy, no guess work, no nothing. Just always keep your eyes on him and he won't be able to trick stab you.
You don't need for your enemy to turn, you can just strafe to their side, but it's harder to pull off because your enemy needs to not be strafing left or right. It's kind of like sidestepping your opponent.
The best spy moment in my career was on dustbowl, getting completely steamrolled by the red team. First point capped and entire team getting spawncamped. I was able to get through where two enemy engineers were laughing on second point w/ two lvl 3 sentries. I had Your Eternal Reward, and as a desperation measure, jumped off the ledge, sapped both sentries, backstabbed both engies and capped the point. I nearly shit my pants with pure ecstasy.
If they strafe from left to right, you can tell that they're not gonna fall for a matador, and probably a corner. You could try a low incline jump stab at this point, but it's safer to pull out your revolver.
I hate playing spy and playing against it but out of curiosity I clicked on this video and was suprised by how well you explained everything! Ima try this shit out on pubs right now.
TheUnknown ok, but the pyro was also in the demo and they said they couldn't track him. if i was in that situation, i would have immediately noticed the red spot.
+David Lewis To clarify, a demo is a replay. Its not a live game, its an in game recording of the match being played back. That spot only shows up during the replay on the demo, it wouldn't be seen when actually playing.
at the beging of the video I thought this was just going to be a load of shit but this video is actualy extremly education and I was blown away by your skills.
the last clip, the heavy knew exactly how to counter all this. He pulled around the corner too far for a good jump. A lot of these can easily be countered by poking out then back up once again. The problem is a lot of players are not aware of this, even in higher skill levels. So then the spy incorporates reversals into the mix. It's simply being fully aware and never underestimating a spy until you know for a fact what their range of skill is.
I love playing Spy, and I can do a few of the trickstabs (maybe not consistently, but I can pull a few of 'em off in a pinch), but I find I prefer the "old school" method of playing Spy. Staying invisible, stalking, building paranoia, using blind spots and staying out of field of view, etc. It's quite amusing when you have 4 Pyros all hunting you at once, and doing jack shit to help their team, and even more fun enraging them by giving a little bit of a verbal taunt (sniff, sniff little doggie Pyro...). It just overall for me is a more satisfying way of playing Spy.
Spy class is so fun! You can go invisible! Fake your deaths 4 ever! Get banned for stairstabbing a raging pyro admin! (wait wat)
fun

The medic with the ubersaw might have hit slurgi if he swung before coming in range. The 0.25 second swing time helped with dodging, as the medic swung when he came into range.
slurgi is so badass but so knowladagble at the same time.
This is why we love you.
Slurgi spy teacha of the year
Best thing you can do is never keep your eyes off the spy, no guess work, no nothing. Just always keep your eyes on him and he won't be able to trick stab you.
This is overcomplicated, you become good with practice
You don't need for your enemy to turn, you can just strafe to their side, but it's harder to pull off because your enemy needs to not be strafing left or right. It's kind of like sidestepping your opponent.
Thank you slurgi, you have helped me become a much better spy. :)
You could try a low incline jump stab at this point, but it's safer to pull out your revolver.
epic trickstab at 1:02. look at how hard you tricked that good player. the old jump-at-them-and-wait-for-them-to-turn-90-degrees.
For some reason, when I move backwards when I try to escaped, I always run into an enemy that I was never aware of.
I hate playing spy and playing against it but out of curiosity I clicked on this video and was suprised by how well you explained everything! Ima try this shit out on pubs right now.
keep us updated about how you fail, too
+Fenrir I don't play fucking spy lol
YOU'RE BACK !!!! :D
"My gamesense is strong"
*Misses demo and runs into pyro*
7:14 lol the medic is just spazzing out
6:18
Movement tip for pyro's...
TF2 has glitches...
You see that red light on the ground... THATS A SPY!
Well, that red light can only be seen on the replay. So not really.
I see it all the times in real games
Well, I cant say anything to that
6:19 you can track him using the red shadow on the ground, had he noticed it, he would have not succeeded.
+David Lewis thats because its a demo. in normal game u dont see that.
TheUnknown ok, but the pyro was also in the demo and they said they couldn't track him. if i was in that situation, i would have immediately noticed the red spot.
+David Lewis To clarify, a demo is a replay. Its not a live game, its an in game recording of the match being played back. That spot only shows up during the replay on the demo, it wouldn't be seen when actually playing.
your back!
OMG SLURGI WELCOME BACK TO UA-cam!!!
Bravo! Nice explications and demonstration examples. Keep doing those kinds of vids. They help alot!
this is a very good video.
Thank you for your time and efforts
at the beging of the video I thought this was just going to be a load of shit but this video is actualy extremly education and I was blown away by your skills.
the last clip, the heavy knew exactly how to counter all this.
You're a legend.
why the fuck does the spy have to be so sophisticated and difficult
This was my favorite video you made yet I got my first logical stab after I watched this video keep up the good work! :D
Wow, glad I discovered your stuff.
Love you slurgi finally a new video
i knew there was an early spy tf2 video with one of my favorite ambient songs in it... i thought it was tha by afx but it was kodomo of all artists
You're awesome, your stabs are awesome, and your channel is awesome. Subbed.
Bravo Slurgi. Awesome video.
Anyone else see the medic @ 7:15 ? XXD
Lol,i shake it off! XD
XD
Very helpful and informative video
You should do a series where people send in demos of matches and you give them advice on how to improve their spying
look at the medic while hes escaping from the pyro (7:20)
7:16 sorry
He uploaded, PRAISE THE LORD! :)
