Also, why would he be wearing one of the largest backpacks for any Joe figure. That backpack was appropriate for a character who would be spending weeks out in no-man's-land and needed large quantities of supplies. His patch looks like the U.S. Army 25th Infantry Division, Vietnam Recon and C.R.I.P (Combined Reconnaissance Intelligence Platoon). The patch was awarded to members of the CRIP unit that passed the Green Beret "Recondo" Training School located in Nha Trang. The patch looks like the patch given to students that graduated the "Recondo" school taught i Vietnam durring the Vietnam war.
I think his machine gun is based on a combination of the German MG42/MG3 and the French AA52
