A Conversation with James George as he Approaches his 98th Birthday 1

James George is a retired Canadian diplomat, writer, environmental activist, and spiritual practitioner. During his diplomatic service he encountered numerous spiritual teachers, including the Dalai Lama, Krishnamurti, Thomas Merton, Yogaswami, Javad Nurbakhsh, Dudjom Rinpoche, and Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. For 60 years he has been a practitioner of the Gurdjieff Work and was a close disciple of the late Madame de Salzmann, G.I. Gurdjieff's primary student. In conversation with David Cherniack he talks about his meetings with some of the remarkable men and women he met during his long and brilliant life.

What an amazing life! He actually met and talked with and got to know seekers most of us have only read about in books. It is rare that we have the opportunity to hear firsthand from those who have experienced encounters like this. God, this is beautiful. What passion, what a mind, what a memory. I remember meeting Mr. George in 1967 at his home in Ottawa. His son Dan, a wonderful friend of mine, had taken me there to celebrate his sister's birthday. In the morning, at breakfast, Mr. George had asked me if I knew Teilh
ard de Chardin. I said that I knew who he was but that I never read what he had written. Shortly after, Dan, my friend went skying with his family and I stayed in the home talking to Dan's mother. It is Marie-France writing on my husband's computer. My beautiful husband would have loved to hear this interview. I was particularly captivated at the end of the interview by the answer to ''What happens when we die''. It brought peace to me as I have often wondered what was going on in my husband's mind as he was dying. I could see that his mind was active even though he could no longer speak. I know that I will listen to the end of this interview many times as it has brought an amazing hope in our ability to stretch our consciousness into consciousness.
