Foreshadow, Symbolism, Contrast
They have a real supernatural power; can predict future, maybe can control weather. Play was made for King James I who was obsessed with power of witches. Thought witches were trying to assassinate him while at sea by controlling weather. Quote tells the story of the play. Macbeth’s first influenced by the talking of the witches.
Thunder brings lightning. Rain=No one’s safe. Everyone suffers after the death of Duncan. They get wet. Thunder is the constant noise of the witches and Lady Macbeth. Lightning is the consequence of the act that takes place. Everyone gets wet because of what Macbeth does. Contrast by giving women who were witches god like powers.
The witches are a democracy and the play is about accepting your king. So democracy is seen as associated with evil. Shakespeare’s way of saying you shouldn’t have a choice he’s your king and you should accept it.

Juxtaposition, hyperbole, patriarchy, Freud id
Sword is smoking. His killing so smoothly, powerfully not a battle, an execution. Sword being an absolute machine. Smoke is blood coming out super-hot . you would actually see the steam coming out his sword. Make Macbeth out to be the god of war. May why he was so keen to agree to the prophecy “none of woman born Shall harm Macbeth”. he already believes that. They boost his ego.
Beautiful killer. Hyperbole. the way he kills is almost like a god of the battlefield. The way he kill is as if he enjoys it. Battlefield is Macbeth’s canvas and blood is the colour he paints it with. The verb “unseamed” makes us think of the tearing of clothing. Tailors seam clothes together. They must be very precise otherwise the clothing comes out wrong. Macbeths reversing that. He’s unseaming a human being. He’s really trying to make sure his enemy is suffering. He’s relaxed, precise, skilled. Makes sure every blow done is perfect. Loves killing.
“Which ne’er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him, Till he unseamed him”. After he watches him die, he shakes his hand. “carved out his passage” reinforces how he’s going deep.
Patriarchy - he’s seen as strong, powerful, brave, invincible
Freud id - is he simply fighting for the king or for his desire to kill as he loves it so much. The thought of bringing the enemy close and smelling his blood is quite twisted. He doesn’t just do it to one person.

Juxtaposition, symbolism, patriarchy
Banquo’s saying they don’t have the features that make them feminine. Can be linked to unsex me here as when she begs to be unsexed it’s what she wants. Witches gave up and sacrificed everything that made them feminine for power. For them it worked. Women were always played by men. It would be men without facial hair. Probably casted with 3 men with beards. In joke with audience as they know it’s being played by men. The only way for women to get power in society is to be born into a rich family or to marry into a rich family. Family connection/appearance. All ugly women have no way of getting power. Why does lady Macbeth want to get unsexed? Shows that even women who were married into power still felt powerless. My default man takes over. Shows a lack of equality. The witches are more powerful than any of the women in the play. Even though they have nothing Lady Macbeth has but has everything she wants. Shows the handicap of a patriarchal society. By attaching yourself to a man its game over for the women. Name Macbeth means son of life. God gives life. Came from a religious background. But everything he does in the text goes against God. Makes everything he did worse. “For brave Macbeth (well he deserves that name)”. living up to his name as he’s fighting for their king who was their god on earth. So when he murders Duncan its worse. Gives more power to Lady Macbeth choosing not to kill Duncan because it reminds her of her father so Macbeth crosses the boundary against his own father (both his father and God).

I took a few notes whilst I listened - maybe they might help? :)
1) Act 1, Scene 1: “In thunder, lightning or in rain?” (1:07)
- Sets up the power of the witches to control the weather:
They can't force Macbeth to do anything - but they can control the weather. Two reasons:
1 - They do have real supernatural power
2 - This pleases the audience (King James), and his ideas on the supernatural.
- This quote tells the story of the entire play:
Thunder - Constant noise of witches and Lady Macbeth (L.M)
Lightening - the strike of Macbeth upon Duncan
Rain - is the misery that everyone goes under, the consequence of Macbeth's actions
- There is a contrast - Witches have God like powers, which may have been controversial.
- Democracy - could be associated with evil:
The witches decide together (democracy), Shakespeare is saying no, there should be monarchy??
2) Act 1, Scene 2: “Smoked with bloody execution… Unseamed him from the nave to th’ chops” (5:39)
- Sword smoking:
Reminds us of: Dragon smoke. Dust from fight. This implies the way in which he is killing - not a fair fight, an execution. Sword could be described as machine like.
- Macbeth is the God of war, Hyperbole:
One man battle. He is killing the enemy.
Explains his willingness to believe the witches when they prophesy that no man, born of women, can kill him.
- Clean Kill, juxtaposition with hyperbole:
This is Macbeth’s canvas, and blood is his paintbrush.
“Seam” - this is a delicate action. His moves are coordinated and relaxed.
The way in which he kills is intimate, yet deep. And then he watches him die. Macbeth is a ‘poster boy’ for the patriarchy.
Does he fight for the king, or because he loves to kill?
3) Act 1, Scene 3: “You should be women, and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so.” (12:03)
- Can be linked to “unsex me here”:
The witches sacrificed, like L.M, everything that made them women.
- Context - the witches can be played by male actors. The actors can have beards - comedic effect.
Poor, ugly women have no way of power into society. They resort to ugly appearances, as they feel powerless, something is missing. Same for L.M??
(Macbeth - means “son of life”. Religious juxtaposition with religious background and who Macbeth should have been [brave Macbeth - well he deserves that name]. He also now is killing for his God.)
4) Act 1, Scene 5: “Unsex me here” (17:20)
- Links to patriarchy:
Getting power - she can’t do it as a woman. She has to take on masculinity.
Also desperation. She is now urgent, now that Duncan is coming - if he is to be killed, it must be now.
Macbeth is not man enough - L.M shall have to be cruel instead, and L.M instead need masculinity.
Her innate nature, and guilty conscience, will stop her. She need to be more like Macbeth in Act 1, Scene 2.
- She never gets unsexed:
She never gets the supernatural power she thinks she is going to get. Shows also the length to which she has to go to get any form of power.
- She is a slave to her desire:
She will do whatever it takes.
- Has no ability to keep children:
She is, in this society, useless.
5) Act 1, Scene 4: “the instruments of darkness tell us truths, win us with honest trifles, to betray’s in deepest consequence” (23:21)
- foreshadowing:
Banquo predicts what will happen, true prophecies. Also stops Banquo telling others of Macbeth’s intrigue, and revealing Macbeth's true ambition. Banquo is, as much as Macbeth, clinging to his own promises - doesn’t reveal Macbeths.
- Second set of prophecies betray him:
There is a contrast between the two sets of prophecies. Clever use of linguistics on the witch’s part. The first set seem real, and seems to be fulfilled. But the second will betray.
- Shows the power of the supernatural.
- Shakespeare takes the witches, and presents them like the three fates:
Can only just see the future? They only reveal the evil already present within Macbeth? Not truly powerful?
- Banquo is the antithesis of Macbeth:
Banquo - will do nothing, and remain silent Macbeth will push fate. Banquo’s silence speaks volume. Whilst quiet, he has plans of his own. So in the end, both are watching, and are wary of each other.
He is also silent because to go against God is not possible (Romans 8:31), and therefore this great promise looks like it will come to pass, especially if he does not interfere.
6) Act 1, Scene 5: “Look like th’ innocent flower, but be the serpent under’t” (32:16)
- Inclusion of the word innocent:
Emphasises how much L.M wants Macbeth to look nice on the outside, as a completely surface thing, but reveals also how she really wants him to act underneath.
Shows the relationship of L.M and Macbeth
Foreshadows Macbeth's Downfall - flower goes, serpent revealed.
- Patriarchy:
Adam and Eve - the serpent corrupted Eve, and she is ordering the serpent into Macbeth. Shows how evil L.M truly is.
- Difference between L.M and Macbeth:
Macbeth acts like a machine. L.M is cunning, like a serpent, underneath it all.
7) Act 2, Scene 1: “Heat oppressed brain” (35:34)
(comes as part of a speech in the form of a soliloquy)
- First time he shows weakness:
Does it by himself
- The heat:
The heat will mould him. The heat is from the witches and L.M, and they will mould him with it. He will not be able to act himself - he shall be manipulated.
Juxtaposition:
Contrasts the Macbeth of the beginning. This is now too much for him - he has been filled.
- Reveals his true nature:
What does he really want? He is heat oppressed from the kill that he is preparing for. The fact he carries on shows that he does what he wants. However, this is no usual kill.
Macbeth is the wicked one, even the way he persuades his wife. He is by no means innocent.
- impact of the supernatural
Messing with his mind - messing with the centre of his thought.
8) Act 3, Scene 1: “Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown.” (41:26)
- Shows the innate weakness of man:
He was dying to become king - but now he has got there, he has nothing. He always wants more and more - he is constantly unsatisfied. Unable to enjoy the moment, and is fretting to keep what he has taken.
- “Fruitless” - no kids:
Jealousy of Banquo. He needs a legacy, and cannot deny Banquo’s promise (for Banquo’s kids to be king) with his own airs to the throne.
- If the play had stopped here - life is good.
But again, this shows the evil of his desires. He will never reach the goal, as he has reversed the order that God had given. Political message - don’t get rid of king James, as in killing him - you will wage war against God.
9) Act 3, Scene 4: “Thou canst not say I did it. Never shake / thy gory locks at me.” (46:46)
- All the nobles see Macbeth admit that he has seen the ghost of Banquo, who accuses him:
Of all the things to come out with - he comes out with this. This proves his guiltiness.
- The start of the end:
1 - The production of the heat oppressed brain?
2 - Or is this a real ghost?
Both work - however, 2 makes sense, as the play has a repeating motif of hallucinations up to this point. This would be his acceptance into the dark. The serpent has taken over.
- Juxtaposition:
Not how a king behaves - he has broken the great chain of being. This is not how he is supposed to behave.
Shows the danger of following your desires. He was willing to do whatever - now is catching up with him.
At the point that he argues with the supernatural, his life changes. The supernatural don’t like to be defied, and punish only men. They don’t like outward defiance - sailor’s wife.
Greek tragedy - hero goes wrong when he tries to interfere with fate.
10) Act 5, Scene 5: “Brief candle”, “Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player.” (54:51)
- At the end of the play, there is a contrast.
A candle can be extinguished by:
1 - Blowing it out,
2 - Letting it burn out.
In this play, everyone is forcefully blown out. For the first time, Macbeth contemplates the fragility of life. Show the contrast of his character.
At the moment L.M dies, Macbeth concentrates on this.
- Beforehand, he takes on L.M’s language:
Still in love? Candle is a religious image - he replaced God with L.M, she was where he placed his faith. Now she is dead, he has no faith - no reason to live.
- Metaphor: Shadows.
He is saying life is just a play. This is ironic. Macbeth has tried to write his own script, but all of it is really written by someone else.
- You can never catch your shadow, which is symbolic of power:
He is always chasing it, and by the time he realises he can never catch it, it's too late. Message: whatever you chase (especially power), it can take you too far, and can consume your whole life.
- We only got glimmers of his character before, and now we see inside.
Religion - we see his rebellion before God. He is saying that going against God will ultimately end up killing you.

The verb 'dominate' implies that I will perform outstandingly well in the paper. The writer has done this in order for the reader to understand that hard work is the key to success and will drive you to ultimately achieve your goals.

I know this is a bit long, but could the "heat-oppressed brain" be another reference to how his sword had "smoked with bloody execution"?
On the battlefield, Macbeth is accustomed to violence; the way in which his sword, "smoked with bloody execution," is a sign of his heroism and effectiveness as a soldier. However, as the idea of Duncan's murder takes root in his "heat-oppressed brain," the familiarity of the sensation of battle begins to eerily comfort him in contemplating regicide. The transition from killing enemies in war to murdering Duncan in his sleep blurs the moral boundaries for Macbeth.
Furthermore, the term "heat" can also be interpreted as a form of excitement (particles in science), which becomes a catalysing force that drives him to commit deeds that satisfy his bloodlust.
Finally, "heat" could also be an allusion to the devil's whisper, a seed of temptation, perhaps implying that his judgement and moral compass ("brain") have already been warped by the flames of hell. I have a question about the first quote (I love the analysis from Mr Everything English), what type of question would I apply that quote to? For example if I was asked about the witches/ supernatural (which seems to be what people are predicting for 2024) I could definitely use that to explore and evaluate their power ie influencing Macbeth etc, but as you both mentioned I can use these quotes for any question.. how would I go about that if I was asked about another character or even a theme?

for the analysis of the second quote, Macbeth is a raisonneur (vehicle or mouthpiece) for patriarchy and his power makes him believe he could rival god's divine qualities. this leads to him disobeying the divine right of kings (great chain of being) and this ego and power gives birth to his toxic ambition which builds up to his hamartia. it shows how strong and desirable qualities in a patriarchal society are like a double-edged sword. Furthermore, the scorpions in Macbeth's mind are caused by him. he is bitter and he poisons his mind through his hubris and ends up harming himself. he stabbed Duncan to kill him and now the "scorpions" in his mind act as his guilt stabbing his mind back for killing his friend, ruler, and cousin, and more importantly, disrupting the great chain of being and natural order. (please tell me if this is good thinking or if I just drifted off because I'm no English teacher😅)
