Formed in the late '60s in Ontario by saxophonist Steve Kennedy, guitarist Ken Marco, keyboard player William "Smitty" Smith, and drummer Wayne Stone, Motherlode scored with a Top 40 hit in 1969 - the smooth "When I Die." Two years after the release of the album of the same title, though, the group had broken up.
For my husband, Ruben. When you passed away babe after 34 years of marriage, you were the man I knew you could be. You were everything I wanted in a man. I love you babe!!
Puts a tear in my eye when I think about Dilla’s decision to sample this on the outro (intro to heaven) of his final album, released just days before he died. A musical legend.
I just imagine Dilla finding this amazing sample, and completely knowing that this is going to be the final track he samples in his life. Truly amazing sample to an amazing track to finish an amazing album by an amazing guy. RIP J Dee
I see Dilla's message now..This was the last song on Donuts (his last album). He knew he was going to die, really sad. RIP my hero
A classic in every sense. Perfect harmony. Powerful words. I'm retired and have this song in my trunk of memories as I move into my later years, always dipping inside, pulling it out, and singing along with whatever voice I have left. Thank you, Motherlode.
An epic gem! One of the greatest songs in the history of music. After 53 years of listening to it, it still chokes me up - always will. The pride of London, Ontario. I have the LP.
Remembered this song from my youth (I'm 65), found it here and played it for my wife, then told her this song expresses exactly my hope regarding my future with her. She looked at me, smiled, and said, "You're feeling romantic, today."
It is just a fantastic song. Period!! Whatever brought people here is a good thing but the record stands on its own merits.
Anyone else here because of I ARE TECH? I am.
The production and arrangement on this song is phenomenal.
I first this song as a kid in the early 70s. I've never forgotten it. Truly soulful. ❤
As a Huge fan of memorable music from that specific year, this one didn't have the same amount of airplay as the others. But what a gem it was ! I get teary every time i hear it ! 🤗👍
One of my ALL TIME FAVORITES Diane Brooks is the female singer on When I die which gives this song a Fifth Demension, Friends Of Distinction , Free Movement Sound
Classic song that often gets forgotten on oldies playlists and stations

Carol Kaye’s brilliant musicality was all over this ….
1969 was such an epic year for music, that this gem almost went unnoticed, could have been #1 any other year!
I just started singing this out of the blue, and I actually found it here. Great memories. I'm 70 now. Still young at heart! Now playing this over and over.
Got the album. Wow! A masterpiece from 1969. Released July 26, 1969 reaching #18 on October 11. Should have been #1.
93/KHJ Los Angeles first time I listened to this song. Just never went out of style.
