    In 2004, the Hornady Manufacturing Company introduced the .17 Hornady Mach 2 using a .22 LR case that had been extended and necked down. This cartridge should not be mistaken for the Hornady .17 HMR, which is based on the case of a .22 Magnum. The .17 HM2 is designed to take varmint at 100 yards or more, and performs the task admirably. It develops a similar amount of energy as the .22 LR in foot pounds, but it travels at a higher velocity - resulting in a flatter bullet trajectory.
    Today, manufacturers still chamber rifles for the .17 HM2 - including Savage, Browning and others. The most common actions are semi-automatic and bolt action, but there are also some quality examples of single shot rifles. The .17 HM2 has also been chambered for revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, and Ruger 10/22 owners can even fire the .17 HM2 from their rifles with a special conversion kit.
    Hornady and CCI currently make .17 HM2 ammunition available with bullets weighing 17 grains, while Hornady also sells a bullet weighing 15.5 grains. Both of these bullets exit the muzzle at more than 2,000 feet per second and carry 150 foot pounds of energy - which is why shooters have reported successful shots with the .17 HM2 on small vermin up to 150 yards.
    Varmint hunters today choose the .17 HM2 for the flat trajectory, accuracy, and light recoil - all factors that combine to help it stand above other rimfire cartridges.

    The parent case of the 17 Mach 2 is the cci stinger. Which is 1/10" longer than standard 22lr. You folks should have mentioned that.

    The only bad thing is they don't make enough different ammo's for it just two brands of ammunition isn't enough if you're rifle don't shoot them you're screwed

    Varmint hunters choose the 17 hmr because it does everything the mach2 does, but better.

      You must try 17 WSM SO MUCH MORE THAN 17HMR

      While it may do it better, but you failed to calculate the cost benefit, the hmr is faster, but it also is more expensive.
      If you are doing target shooting, both will easily put a hole in paper, but hm2 will do it much cheaper, if you are shooting varmints, both will do the job, but one will do it cheaper.
      Sure the hmr is a bit faster, but there comes a point when the only difference is the price....get my point?

      @@Diemerstein it all depends on where you live. In Finland there is only 1 rifle and 1 type of ammo for mach2, but hmr like 15 different rifles and 15 different ammos to choose from.

    338 lapua? Parent case and purpose. I dont understand why you would want a special sized action that doesnt conform to the two standard short and long action receivers.

    • @tiputipu777
      @tiputipu777 5 років тому +3

      You must be fairly new to shooting. The 338 lapua magnum is the most popular and succesful long range 'sniper' caliber in the world for anti-personel missions.
      Shoot one out to distance and you will realise why all serious modern militaries have their long range precision weapons chambered in that round.

      There are actually four action lengths. The original, standard, is built around the 30-06 which was a derivative of the 7x57 Mauser. The magnum action was designed around the 375 H&H and other dangerous game calibers. Next came the short actions developed around the 308 Winchester and its offspring. The 222 Remington ushered in the intermediate calibers, those between pistol calibers and “battle rifle” calibers like the 308. The magnum action is longstanding in rifle calibers and utilizing it for a medium caliber anti-personnel weapon made sense as our military didn’t have anything between the 300 Winchester Magnum and the 50 BMG. This gave our military an extreme range weapon that didn’t require more than one man to operate. I know you posted this a while back but I hope this adds to your knowledge base.
