Soon after Winchester introduced the cartridge, the Marlin Firearms Company, collaborating with the Union Metallic Cartridge Company, released the cartridge in their own version. They followed the common contemporary method of ammunition identification by listing the caliber first and the powder charge weight second. The result was the designation ".30-30" - meaning a .30 caliber bullet and a powder charge of 30 grains. At first, bullets weighing 160 grains were offered, as the .30-30 was intended for use as a short-range hunting cartridge for deer and other medium-sized game animals in North America. Today, bullets commonly weigh between 110 and 170 grains. Soft point bullets, as well as hollow point bullets, are the most common configuration. The effective range of the .30-30 has historically been 200 yards, but new technology - specifically the Hornady LEVERevolution cartridge - sends a bullet that retains more than 1,000 foot pounds of energy as far out as 300 yards. The .30-30 has been chambered in several different types of guns. And without question, the lever action is the most popular. The Winchester Model 94 as well as the Marlin Model 336 are two famous examples of high-quality, long-lasting .30-30 lever action rifles. Savage Arms offered this round with their pump action Model 170C and with their bolt action Model 340. Thompson Center chambers .30-30 in a single shot pistol, and Magnum Research sells a semi-custom revolver based on their BFR revolver. Independent of the chosen firearm, the .30-30 was and remains a great cartridge for hunting any game of medium size. Many hunters are appreciative of the mild recoil from this potent round, as well as the compact rifles that have been chambered for this caliber - since they are lightweight and simple to maneuver in country with heavy brush. For many reasons, the .30-30 cartridge will likely be used for another hundred years. Check out today's best ammo deals by visiting us at Ammo.com. Follow us on social media. Forgot to mention how the .30-30 Winchester was the America's first small-bore, sporting rifle cartridge designed for smokeless powder. Probably should have went ahead and explained the old bullet-diameter, charge weight naming system was used for and ended with black powder. Those are two of the most notable and interesting facts about the .30-30 Winchester cartridge.
While I’ve never taken a deer with a .30-30, I absolutely Iove my Winchester 94 rifle. I hunt with a .243 and a scope, but I plan on moving to Texas to hunt hogs with iron sights and my .30-30 I’ve had for 30 years.
I saw Winchester rounds in Colombia 🇨🇴 South America that were made for the HK 91 which they had bullet head stamp 3030 with a ballistic military cartridge
A very comprehensive explanation of what 30-30 means. Never knew. I bet it could take large game down, just as other popular game cartridges being used today. Good Job.
My dad passed away last November and his 94 was left for me. He knew it was one of my favorite to shoot. It's a great gun and I'm sure your family will have great memories with it.
@@fredtaylor9792 people hate on them because it's a 30-30, I've gotten all of my deer with this 94 and I never realized that a brand new one at bass pro is $1200
30-30 was used in benchrest competion..... many single-shot break-action rifles made.....often very expensive ..... 30-30 is a very good round when loaded properly
I wish i had found a German drilling in .30-30 back then instead of the Savage combogun. I liked the cartridges good and better than the gun, Germans liked those drillings made by Sauer very much. And they gave the .30 the netric number 7,62x51R .
And yes, As effective as it is,,,pleasing to carry and shoot, The biggest thing that has changed since it's beginning is that,,, People just don't live as close to the land anymore, So their ability to just be in the right place at the right time has been compromised,, Most modern people should treat the 30 30 as an 🏹 archery round, In that they get close, Untill they have the woods skills needed to get a clean kill shot, When they practice they should set standards like if they miss, They should miss a meal,,, If someone misses enuf meals they will eventually learn to upgrade the sight system to something that works for them,, And that is just a start to having less wounded innocent animals,,,

*Still a Great Round over 120yrs later* 👍😉
30-30 Rifles have taken more deer than all other calibers combined, I have one I use it and I love it !
I wish to find a cheap box of .30-30 but I can’t find any! My grandpa gave me a lever action marlin and he never used it

I love my model 94 and will keep it in my family hopefully long after Im gone from this world

30 Remington was a very interesting cartridge!
Great info. I always wondered what the second "30" stood for. Thanks much.
I have a 94 30 30
Very good shooter

Curious why this forgotten caliber is sold out everywhere?
Sir different 5.56.45mm and 223 catrige details and all made bullets info
And yes,
As effective as it is,,,pleasing to carry and shoot,
The biggest thing that has changed since it's beginning is that,,,
People just don't live as close to the land anymore,
So their ability to just be in the right place at the right time has been compromised,,
Most modern people should treat the 30 30 as an 🏹 archery round,
In that they get close,
Untill they have the woods skills needed to get a clean kill shot,
When they practice they should set standards like if they miss,
They should miss a meal,,,
If someone misses enuf meals they will eventually learn to upgrade the sight system to something that works for them,,
And that is just a start to having less wounded innocent animals,,,
This was forgotten? I don’t shoot this caliber as much as nato and Warsaw Pact stuff, but this has taken half of my deer.
