Absolutely!! They are my fourth favorite band right behind Iron Maiden,Judas Priest, and Megadeth. Jon Schaffer is one of my favorite songwriters ever. I love Demons And Wizards and especially Sons Of Liberty also. Brush Fires Of The Mind is one of my favorite albums ever. I hope that they do more reactions for Iced Earth and hopefully Demons And Wizards and Sons Of Liberty also. Iced Earth deserves way more recognition than they get.
A masterpiece that I’ll never get tired of. I love how the female vocals in the chorus are sung by the guitarist’s sister, who ended up marrying the singer. Talk about a talented family….
It's even more sad than what you discussed - Spawn refused to be a pawn of the devil and began using his powers to go after truly evil people, and at the end after literally killing the devil he was still denied entrance to heaven. All because he loved his wife so much he refused to leave her alone in the world.
It's been a while, but wasn't his refusal caused by the earlier realisation what Heaven and Hell truly are? - the same cold machinations, differing mostly in aesthetics, not caring about your morality or well-being, just aiming to use your soul in their power struggle. IIRC the Heaven actually allowed him to enter somewhere at that time, but it's been him that refused - he already chose the third way, connecting himself to the world itself. Then again, the song came out in 1996, so I think quite a while before Spawn killed "the devil". A minor point - the demon Malebolgia, while sometimes presented as _the_ Devil, wasn't actually that in the story's larger mythology. Just one of the more powerful demons that took over at the time. The actual Devil [spoiler:] as well as God were two childish siblings who started it all, though never able to defeat one another.
So in the Spawn story, he originally made the deal with Malebolgia to become an officer in the army of Hell in the eventual war of the Apocalypse. He made the deal just to go back and see his wife, but it came with a lot of things he didn't account for, and the comic is mostly Spawn dealing with Hellborn who hate him, the human criminals and people who wronged him in life, and trying to get his face back so he can go see his wife. They don't explain til much later in the story that actually God and Satan are missing and have been for long before the comic started, they were actually banished from their respective realms by their "Mother", as both God and Satan are simply two children of a much more powerful cosmic universal being, and just two of an infinite number of "gods" this Mother has spawned. There's a lot of stuff that happens but in the end Spawn is guided to the Tree of Life where he takes the powers of a god himself, and after Armageddon actually happens and the world is finally destroyed, Spawn remakes it the way it was, but cuts off Hell and Heaven from reaching it, though in the process he gives up his power and is left with a world that has no need for him, and no way for him to return to who he was (though even if he could, it would be useless due to what he realizes about himself and Wanda in his final moments). It's not that he was denied entrance into Heaven, it's that he realized early on in the story that the damnation he was seeking to shed, and the Heaven he hoped for wasn't real and he was stuck with the reality that there were no "streets of gold", nor could he die and be rid of his need to be with his wife.
little brought up fact, he also chose to become a hellspawn as punishment for who he was in life. he beat his wife and was a douche. i think he either almost did, or did hit her and abort their child. im not saying he didnt love her, but it was a messed up type of situation. he forgot it all when he came back, but eventually he is forced to remember.
Spawn, Al Simons is life, was a government assassin. He killed countless people, some evil and some innocent, and when he decided he was tired of the killing and wanted to retire for his wife Wanda he was betrayed by his boss and murdered. He went to hell for all the violence of his life and Malebogia, one of the 7 lords of hell, made a deal with him. Become a hellspawn and lead the armies of hell against heaven and he can see his wife again. In life Spawn thought what he was doing was right and he becomes very angry with god about how things turned out even if a part of himself understands he damned himself through the violence of his life.
You guys have to listen to the entire "Dark Saga" record. It makes more sense considering A Question of Heaven is the last song on the record. Trust me you won't regret it, that and you will get to learn about Spawn on the way seeing as the record is about Spawn.
Fun fact: iced earth's album art is what made me want to be an artist for album art. I was so young when I saw that cover for Something Wicked this way Comes
He was a marine and later CIA operative who was betrayed and murdered by his friend. He made a deal with the devil to to see his wife one last time, only to find 5 years have passed and his wife married his best friend and they have a daughter. This is told in the song "I Died For You."
One of Iced Earth's best songs live. There is a live version from Alive in Athens but no accompanying video, the footage was corrupted. But that audio version is incredible. Though this song is technically about the comic book character Spawn (as is all of Dark Saga). It can easily be applied to nearly anyone as it taps into the universal questions we all have about what happens when we move on from this world, or don't.
@@focusman420 it is not THE version, this one right here is. Although Barlow holds some amazing highs on the live version, the whole "why won't you let me die" part on this studio version is the most passionate vocals he has ever laid down.
Just stumbled onto this. Really happy to see people reacting to Iced Earth, especially since I really love this song. I absolutely love the production in this era.
First off, I want to thank you for reacting to my all time favorite Iced Earth song off of my all time favorite Iced Earth album The Dark Saga. Yes this album is about the comic book character Spawn, the ultimate anti-hero. But you left out some important details in your explanation that give context to the song, and album as a whole. Spawn (Al Simmons) was a former CIA operative that did black ops works, you know the NASTY stuff. The problem was he began to like what he was doing and that caught the attention of the Devil, actually the character was Malebogia not the Devil who was a Prince of Hell. Al was betrayed by his superiors and was killed by other black ops personnel. He Was going to Hell but Malebogia made him a deal, work for me and you can stay on Earth and look after your wife. Al accepted the offer but Malebogia, being a devil, betrayed him and tried to wipe his mind so that he would lead his army of Hellspawn in a war against Heaven. Eventually Al, now a decaying corpse, slowly regains his memories. He goes to see his wife only to realize that she remarried to his best friend; about 5 years have passed since Al's death. Realizing that he was betrayed, who knew?...,began waging a war against the forces of darkness. The reason Al "walks alone" is because he's not only fighting against the forces of Hell but also against the forces of Heaven who deem him a threat. All he wants to do is end his life, and thus his suffering, but Malebogia will not release him and God couldn't care less. It's funny, in the comics, God and the Devil (The Devil) are portrayed as brothers in a eternal squabble but neither one is THE ultimate power in the universe.
It's a really good song with a lot of emotions, and it does raise some interesting questions. Personally I don't feel that anyone that allows eternal punishment, especially horrific ones like torture, can be a good being. By the same notion I can't see the concept of Heaven working for me since I would never be able to be happy knowing that others, especially people I know, were suffering for eternity, especially those that go there just because they believed in the wrong god. I don't really consider myself good when I live such a great life while knowing that innocent children are suffering all over the world, but I'd consider myself truly evil if I was fine with eternal torture.
Is there a wrong God? I think that would be fucked. Like you go through life being a good person following a different religion. Then turns out "God" is the one true God abs he's like yeah to hell with you for worshiping someone else. Fine by me
this is what I believe, Do the best you can to live a good life. Live ith the basic principles of man (don't murder, steal, help each other when able to, etc) basically don't be a prick. You good. Sure there might be some world changing things you can do and might have opportunities to do them, but you wouldn't get punished for that. Unless you actually harm someone. (i know a bit unrelevent as this is from 4 years ago, but felt i might as well comment)

19:10 - I don't exactly remember how much of the story was established by the time the song was written or released, but Spawn's mythology is its own thing, inspired by religions but spinning it all in its own way. From your, Christian perspective, it's even _worse_ than what you say, because [spoiler:] neither hell nor heaven care that much about your morality, just about claiming your soul and how they can use it for their benefit in a long power struggle. But it's been a while...

That being said, I had a suggestion for a reaction video: 'Ghost of Freedom' by Iced Earth. The song DOESN'T glorify war, RATHER it gives homage and respect to ALL members of the military who either ARE currently serving our nation or who HAVE served our nation in the past. But regardless, again GREAT reaction video as always dudes.
Video is 35:18 long....they comment on the song, starting at 34:45..when they rate it?? Would like to hear some feedback on the instrumentation, song structure, transitions, etc! Good review...9.8!
Vin unfortunately doesn’t listen to his subscribers. He does this over and over again. We want to hear reviews about the music not just the lyrics. Will he ever learn that’s what we want? I doubt it...
The guy doesn’t seem to be interested in the song at all. The body languages and all clearly show it, checking phone and expressions tell he’s distracted af.
I always felt like he was talking to the devil whom made him into Spawn because he refused to lead hells legions as commanded and betrays Malbolgor ( the devil), but he still won't release his soul. Your entire commentary was fantastic and touched me on some level. Just wanted to throw it out there that I think he's talking to his enslaver P.S.: After looking up the lyrics, yeah you're right. He's talking to God.
Great reaction guys. If I were to show a single song that describes METAL to a friend it would be A Question of Heaven! Matt Barlow is the voice of metal!!!
Biggest underated group ever !! ( with Matt Barlow ) I saw them 6 times in show never disappointed ! Dante's INferno ( live in Athen ) > Question Of Heaven > Angel's Holocast > When the night fall
Late reply! But I think the key here is in the end. "And in my dying breath. My heart hold no regrets, I would not change a thing" He is unwilling to ask for forgiveness for what he did, and therefore the gates of heaven are closed to him. Hell does not want him either so his fate is to walk the earth
Hilarious!! During this song, up until @5:35 , did I finally realize, the screaming kids in the background WERE NOT my own (I'm wearing headphones). 😳..oops... anyways...I've been an Iced Earth fan since the late 90's, before UA-cam and streaming music... CD's all the way. I've looked at these lyrics on a different note, comparing them to my life, in a way. I do that with many songs. Anyways, this song is so powerful, as well as the band. Still holding out hope that Schaffer works it out and the band can continue. 37 years the band has stood.
Not to be a nerd but Spawn by this point is no longer human being so by all theological constructs he is outside of Grace he didn't just sell his soul but became a non human demonic general the comics equivalent of a principality
As opposed to even 13 years ago, there are countless people who stream all music & don't even own a CD player. Of course new album will be available in all formats, and the perfect time to make catalog available as well. Hardly a sell out. And new song is very good. @@MorbidAngel31775
One thing I always struggled with when I was in catholic school is the notion that God knew what was going to happen when he sent Jesus into the world. This is somewhat of a contradiction to the idea of free will. Is our will really free if God knows what is going to happen? There is the whole idea of omnipotence and omnipresence that plays in to that as well, but they are abstract theoretical concepts. So in the example of Issac used from the old testament, God in theory should have known what Abraham would say which is pretty needlessly cruel. Why would God need a sacrifice anyways? Thats all a big part of why I really dislike the old testament and in general why I have problems with the bible conceptually and believe its more of a historical text of the times, than some sort of direct word from God about how we should live our lives.
hi, i think the depictions of situations encountered and elaborated in the old testament is very important to us because it serves as an example for the people in the future when they ask how about if, what about if, and there is mostly always a situation to lead us into which is already depicted in the Bible to serve as an example and an answer to human queries on such situations. For some reason you could almost see the purpose and importance of these stories and depictions of examples of the possible questions we might encounter as we try to learn more about our creator, how he thinks, how he answers, and how he reach us in our own being to choose him over our own self destructive tendencies.
Do the 1st 2 tracks for this album, the 'Dark Saga' ua-cam.com/video/if1ZIthQ9OM/v-deo.html and 'I died for you' ua-cam.com/video/R-3l2eorxpQ/v-deo.html
So, this turned out a whole lot different than I expected. "Let's listen to and talk about 'A Question of Heaven' bu Iced Earth", summed up with "I understand the take, but it's based on a false premise, hence had Al Simmons beckoned God to absolve him, God would've." Still, though, it was an interesting listen and I understand that your views as protestants aren't necessarily shared by Christians of other convictions but through you I feel I got a better understanding of the concept and aspects of God. Truth be told, it actually made me want to read up on the bible and partake in some sort of philosophical discussion around what different passages may be inferring. I'm not a religious man by any stretch, and I have no intention of delving in to any church of any creed, but I do enjoy learning and understanding, sharing views and ideas with others to better understand how the different aspects of the world appear. Tl;dr: Thanks for sharing. I'd loved for you to discuss the song based more on the premise it explores, but I can also understand that it may be completely irrelevant as it doesn't reflect the views of God you hold. Have you listened to and talked about Melancholy (Holy Martyr) by Iced Earth yet? If not, that may be more on point for a reaction video.
There's a couple decent tellings of Spawn here, but as far as Vin was off I will give my own. Al Simmons (who became Spawn) was a government assassin who was killed by his own people. He was sent to hell for killing people for a living. When he was sent to hell a higher up in Hell named Malebolgia saw something in Al, and wanted him to be an officer in Hell's army to attack Heaven. Malebolgia made a deal if Al became a Hell Spawn (ranking officer) he would be able to see his wife again. To mess with Spawn and try and keep him on the side of hell he is brought back 5 years after his death to find his wife married to his best friend with a daughter he was never able to have or give his wife. Memories come in fragments, and Spawn is tormented. Seeing his wife happy with someone else all Spawn wants to do is die. Hell won't release him, as it values Spawn's skill, and Heaven feeling a bit threatened sends Spawn hunters to kill Spawn. The HBO animated series does a pretty decent telling. As stated in here The Dark Saga is a concept album about Spawn, and it deserves a complete listen in order.
Alas, Lord is Upon Me- Behemoth Conjuring the Dead- Belphagor Frontschwein- Marduk No Salvation- Malevolent Creation The Voice of the Universe- Rotting Christ
There was an amazing spawn cartoon series based on spawn (and overseen by Tod McFarlane, the creator of the comic)..I think it was on hbo in 1997 and idk how to access it now but if that's possible I'd highly recommend watching it (there's the 1st few episodes on youtube)..being hbo it was gritty, deep, and vulgar. definately not disney shit. :)

The song DOESN'T glorify war, RATHER it gives homage and respect to ALL members of the military who either ARE currently serving our nation or who HAVE served our nation in the past.
But regardless, again GREAT reaction video as always dudes.
Kids be quiet we're recording!
Yesss Iced Earth, now try something from the horror show album, Dracula or Phantom opera ghost.
Nah, WOLF
The entire Dark Saga album showcases the story of Spawn. Its a great listen start to finish 👌
Nice, the third part of the trilogy killer song.
You guys should try heaven denies by demons and wizards, a joint project of blind guardian's hansi and iced earth
Morbid Angel - God of Emptiness A must react video.
love this song!!!! 🤘🤘Matt Barlow at his greatest!
Absolutely
The guy doesn’t seem to be interested in the song at all. The body languages and all clearly show it, checking phone and expressions tell he’s distracted af.
Great show!👍
Do legacy in a rhyme by pyramaze. Same singer!
I always felt like he was talking to the devil whom made him into Spawn because he refused to lead hells legions as commanded and betrays Malbolgor ( the devil), but he still won't release his soul. Your entire commentary was fantastic and touched me on some level. Just wanted to throw it out there that I think he's talking to his enslaver
P.S.: After looking up the lyrics, yeah you're right. He's talking to God.
Anthrax - Zero Tolerance or Blood Eagle Wings
Great reaction guys. If I were to show a single song that describes METAL to a friend it would be A Question of Heaven! Matt Barlow is the voice of metal!!!
Iced Earth - Pure Evil (Live in Athens)
Biggest underated group ever !! ( with Matt Barlow )
I saw them 6 times in show never disappointed !
Dante's INferno ( live in Athen ) > Question Of Heaven > Angel's Holocast > When the night fall
Add Travel in Stygian & Phantom Opera Ghost to that list.
I hope so too
Haven't laughed this much on a video intro with an argument.
Love Iced Earh
Nargaroth - Seven tears are flowing to the river
damn this song has alll ... allll the fkn feels
Can you try a band called TYR, if i have to put a song, Fields of the fallen, thier cover of Panteras cemetary gates, or Fire and Flame
Hail To The Hammerrrr!!!!
Finally more iced earth!!!! You cant find a more underated metal band. Galloping riffs from hell!!!
They're pretty popular. Surely you can find many more underrated metal bands. Like Mechina for example.
Iced Earth - The Phantom Opera Ghost
Not to be a nerd but Spawn by this point is no longer human being so by all theological constructs he is outside of Grace he didn't just sell his soul but became a non human demonic general the comics equivalent of a principality
Great interpretation, I am not Christian/religious at all, but its always cool to hear you two check out songs
Tool has a new song out.....jus sayin lol. Love iced earth too.
It's not that great.
@@tomwisniewski8988 Not surprising lol
Meh tool sucks.
This album is one of my favorite concept albums of mine
Iced Earth - Dracula
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him(kjv) II Corinthians 5:21
I love this song !
Do the 1st 2 tracks for this album, the 'Dark Saga' ua-cam.com/video/if1ZIthQ9OM/v-deo.html and 'I died for you' ua-cam.com/video/R-3l2eorxpQ/v-deo.html
Iron Maiden!-Phantom of the Opera (live at the Rainbow 1981 or live at Gothenburg 2005)
If you'd like to react to a song with similar subject matter, listen to Alice Cooper's "Gimmie" song!!
this is one of the songs based of the spawn comics it was from the dark saga concept album
Played this song with my first band :D
Listen please let it roll - ufo
So, this turned out a whole lot different than I expected. "Let's listen to and talk about 'A Question of Heaven' bu Iced Earth", summed up with "I understand the take, but it's based on a false premise, hence had Al Simmons beckoned God to absolve him, God would've."
Still, though, it was an interesting listen and I understand that your views as protestants aren't necessarily shared by Christians of other convictions but through you I feel I got a better understanding of the concept and aspects of God.
TOOL new track is a TOP PRIORITY
Get this FIRST ASAP!!!!!!!
You guys NEED to react to megadeth she wolf. It has probably the BEST ending to a song

Opeth - Serenity Painted Death
There was an amazing spawn cartoon series based on spawn (and overseen by Tod McFarlane, the creator of the comic)..I think it was on hbo in 1997 and idk how to access it now but if that's possible I'd highly recommend watching it (there's the 1st few episodes on youtube)..being hbo it was gritty, deep, and vulgar. definately not disney shit. :)
ICED EARTH 👏👏 ICED EARTH👏👏
