My dad sung this song to me to get me to sleep and it breaks my heart every time I hear it. He passed away in 2011 I was only 8. Update 12/17/23 I now have a 2 year old daughter who I sing this to. ❤️ Thank all of you for your condolences, good wishes, and your own stories. ❤️❤️
+Soren B. what a great memory of your Dad.....one of the great things when people love one another.....the memory of their actions lives forever and warms our hearts.pass the tradition on to your children some day.
my father sang this song to me all the time he passed away with prostate cancer at the age of 57 I love you daddy always be lucky see you on the other side
Exactly. As far as I can remember, I believe that that was the only time in the film that he spoke. A completely unexpected and genius move by the director.
That was my dad's favorite part of the movie. When I was little it use to bring tears to his eyes when it was on. Now that he's gone it brings tears to mine. Thanks for the post. I just went down memory lane.
I'm only 12 so as you can imagine I'm not into this type of music but this was played at my Grans funeral last week because she always sang it. I cry every time I hear it now! I really love this song now and appreciate it so much and now every word makes sense to me, just like it did to my gran.❤
Please accept my sincerest heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your gran...i never thought of that song for ones bereavement for a loss of a loved! And yet listening to it i now can see it!
Hey Amy, been 8yrs since your lovely post about your dear Nan. You're 20 now and I was wondering, does the song still get to you like it did at your Nan's funeral..?
My father sang this song to all his grandchildren as they came along, my son included. My son, aged 30 sang it to his son, aged 10 months. This coming Monday I will be playing this song at my son's funeral.
Godbless you and your family, he's in the arms of Jesus and well taken care of. Do your best to keep the Faith always, Lord knows the depth of your agony, just like his son nailed and body broken by this fallen fallen world. Godbless you all😑✝️🏡❤️🙏👍
This song has more than once eased my stresses and pains over the years. When I was younger my dad would whistle and sing this to me when I was upset or sick and every bad thing in the world seemed to go away. Today is his 52nd birthday! He’s my idol and my hero. One day I hope to sing this song to my son.
That man had a great voice and the way he sang it just made my heart melt I cried so much when I heard it the first time my dear departed wife died nine years ago right after she died I saw that movie and I cried my eyes out I cried so long I didn't have any tears left to cry but everytime I hear that song reminds me of her she was just a wonderful woman God sent her to me that's why it worked we were married 13 years never had a fight that's what was so perfect about it God is a perfect matchmaker he got us together and now she's gone I think God that I have 13 great years with her the best 13 years of my whole life no I live alone I listen to that song and it brings tears to my eyes now because my mom just passed away two years ago I don't think I can ever be happy again but I know the Lord will make me happy when I go to heaven then I get to see my mom and my wife again
I cried as a kid when I heard this song my mother loved it... It was her favourite version of the song she passed away a few years back and now everytime I listen to this it breaks my heart and reminds me of her I know I'll see you again mom love you
I sing this to my baby girl layla, I amend the lyrics to fit her name in. She is 4 and loves it, but quite often I can't hold back the tears. I love u baby x
I used to sing this song all the time when I was down for about 2 years, Everyone in prison is not bad people, Just made a few mistakes in life along the way. This is a great song, I love it
my dad used to sing me this song when I was 4 or 5. he taught it to me before he died 8 years ago and I've never forgotten it. my dad was the one who encouraged me to sing. he honestly had one of the most beautiful voice I've ever heard and I can still hear him singing along to this song as I'm listening to it
This old ex-con remembers this song from my youth ... well over a half century ago ... Sounds like this oerson has walked the walk ... Sometimes, sung plainly is the most beautiful way .. well done my friend ..
This feels so warm. It has this feeling that’s so hard for me to pin point because it’s so rare. It has soul. It’s warm. It’s saturated. It’s calm. It’s love.
worked at birmingham jail in the uk and this song makes me think of the good and the bad times and reminds were all human just with different experiences of life
Ive been in Birmingham, jail uk as inmate late 80s early 90s n remember writing this to my woman n sang it often,, ha nowhere near as good as it sounds in the film tho,,
This shoots me back to 1997 when I watched this on VHS. That was the era of VHS tapes and video rental stores. I haven't watched Stir Crazy when I was a kid in the 70's. Sweet memories of bygone days.
My father and I watched this movie whenever it played on TV. We'd both have tears in our eyes during this scene. Its sung so beautifully. Movies today rarely move me like the classic. Gene and Richard had an undeniable chemistry onscreen.
That guy actually sang the song. He was an opera singer that was taken from us at a relatively young age. Such a beautiful voice! Rest in peace and comfort knowing you have a song for the ages!
I'm only 26 but i heard this song in stir crazy when i was a kid and it was on tv one day.. i've been singing this song to my 5 year old since he was born. Beautiful song.
Remember watching this great movie as a kid. Can always see the laughter on my parents faces of the leg scene in the jail cell and the movie overall was iconic.. Those days we're beautiful when people we're real honest good human - being's, now 40 yrs later whenever I see this movie on TV it brings me right back. Great song and sung well I am 77yrs ole now but I lot me father when I was 7 and my mother when I was just 9 this song is sad but for some reason makes me think of those very short yrs I had with mum and dad. I sing along with it and even wrote a version using that tune about a lady I once loved. always I end it in tears but still I love it.
Thank you for this video. This is the version my mother sang to me when I was very, very young a very long time ago. I can still hear her voice singing it to me.
I can still remember when I heard this the first time it was really nice to hear it and it also reminds me of my mum but she passed when I was 7 and that was 12 years ago

Thanks for clearing up all the BS. I have the vinyl soundtrack and Dorian Holley IS the one whose voice you hear singing. I wish idiots who have no clue wouldn't spread misinformation like it was the gospel. DH also served as a voice coach on American Idol for awhile.
@@johnbauman4005 Wow! I saw "Stir Crazy" when I was quite young (around 9 or 10?; now almost 47) and never knew the film had a soundtrack! Holy Cannoli, if I had known this sooner, I would have learned the complete version a loooong time ago. Damn it, why'd that scene have to be so melancholy; but so beautiful at the same time? KHAAAAAAAANNNNN! *shakes fist at the sky*
NOW THAT IS TALENT!!!!!!!!! You can tell this man FELT those words and I am not ashamed to say it brought me to tears! :-) I wish more "artists" now days sang with this much "heart and emotion"!
I literally play this all night every night for my son. Its the only way he will fall asleep. Its like a trigger now. If I even start to him it, he gets sleepy!
Such a beautiful song it has always made me cry .I first watched this when I was 10 and watched it with my father regularly growing up. Such a funny movie with a very beautiful sad heartfelt song.
My mother used to sing this to me as a child. I've moved across the world and barely get to talk with her anymore and she suffered vocal chord paralysis a couple years ago and it's difficult for her to talk for long periods of time or sing at all. Sometimes when I'm feeling sentimental and missing her, I think back to when she sang this to me. I would have asked her to record herself singing it for me but obviously she can't. No other version I've found comes close to the way she sang it - this version is pretty much spot on and has washed such a wave of nostalgia over me. Thank you for sharing!

I was playing this tonight on my new Fender Accoustic Guitar My beautiful lady got me for xmas. When I finished, the phone rang. It was my father telling me that Gram just passed away in the hospital at 97 yrs old. Although I weep, and it is our loss, comfort comes in the thought that she suffers no more and is with the good lord! Rest in peace Gram, we all miss you already!
Thanks for having this here @makethem squeal! Such a special, memorable song! The first time I heard it was when the movie came out and it stuck with me! So haunting and beautiful! I know he's singing in heaven now!
First came across this song in Stir Crazy as a kid and even then it caught you off guard. This song is moving in a way that is hard to describe. It brings back sad but welcome memories of my father and times long past but remembered fondly, thank you for uploading.
@blackstersherron its not, its the voice of Erland van Lidth, the actual bloke who singing it in the movie. i dont know for a fact though. only what i read on sites regarding the actor. said he pre recordered the song for the film. he not singing it live in the movie.

i first heard this song back in the 80s.i was so moved by the song ive heard it sung country and western style the absolutely strangled the song leave the song alone? no one can sing this song no matter what top artist tries emulate the voice of erland van lidth it just wont work this is a one of a kind
this song always brings back sad memories of when i was a lot younger and locked up in winson green jail, (birmingham england) spent a good part of my life there. im now married with children , i just pray to god they dont make the same mistakes i made when i was younger!. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Great Voice, perfect for the tone and range. Some songs such as this, explains the one hit wonder curse! Like acting and the curse of stereotyping! The public can't see or hear the singer or actor, writers other works! The voice was perfect for the song!✌😎✌
The man singing this song is Erland Van Lidth, the actor who played Grossberger in the movie Stir Crazy ..he was also an opera singer ..he died in 1987 from heart failure at the age of 34
Saw Grossburger sing this in Stir Crazy when I was 5, I sing it to my baby daughter over 30 years later and it never fails to knock her out. Beautiful. Thank fuck.
Awesome post that part of the movie blew me away to see a figure that was pointed out as ruthless humanized to that degree reallly rounded out his character and made you add a whole layer to the people in this film. Brought tears to my eyes. Well played
Who's here in 2024 still listening to this masterpiece
I am, and it still makes me cry every time 😢
Love this song watching stir crazy every time I hear grossberger sing it I look it up

Music transcends life. This amazing rendition is a clear example. Life is fleeting. Beauty in music knows no boundaries nor does it recognise death.
BEAUTIFULLY SAID I AGREE TO .GOD BLESS YOU..
I learnt this song as a child, long before "Stir Crazy". This has to be the best take of it I have ever heard.
I totally agree gotta love it I'm just old school
Johnny Cash does a great rendition as well.
there’s also a decent version by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman
Definitely I've heard all the other versions this is best one
Played this at my fathers funeral back in July!! R.I.P. Danny Plug Haynie!! 1938-2019❤⚘

this song always brings back sad memories of when i was a lot younger and locked up in winson green jail, (birmingham england) spent a good part of my life there. im now married with children , i just pray to god they dont make the same mistakes i made when i was younger!. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Thank you so much for putting this song together, the way it was meant! We need more people like you, thanks!!
What a song...just meditate on this for the duration of it and you will see the lyrics ever so clearly. Classic!

#RIPGeneWilder Song from the film Stir Crazy.
Awesome post that part of the movie blew me away to see a figure that was pointed out as ruthless humanized to that degree reallly rounded out his character and made you add a whole layer to the people in this film. Brought tears to my eyes. Well played
