      Being Irish myself its' great to know that my brothers and sisters settled in America and found a place they could call home. Nice video but I would have loved to have heard you speak to some of the locals and ask them about their family connections to Ireland and what life is like for them there.

    Wow, that's very interesting.. I never knew that.. I live in Queens.. The Woodside and Sunnyside sections of Queens used to be almost all Irish back in the day.. But most of the Irish have moved elsewhere.. But there are some Irish pubs left in the area, and a small Irish population remains..

    • @ProjectGaiaTravel
      @ProjectGaiaTravel  4 місяці тому

      Yes there is a small population of Irish and Irish Americans left in Woodside and Sunnyside, as with most of the neighborhoods in NYC. I'd say the biggest I've seen are Woodside in the Bronx and Rockaway in Queens. Thanks for watching.

    Back in the day, Inwood in Northern Manahattan was overwhelmingly Irish. That changed in the 60's. I moved there in 2007. At that time, there were still a number of traditional Irish bars(many of them divey) throughout the neighborhood. Now, there is only one Irish bar in the neighborhood.

    Memories! I only visited Woodlawn once. In the early 90s I would have 3 months holidays from University so I would go to Wildwood, NJ for the summer and get a job. Widlwoood is a summer location so plenty of jobs for us Irish to do! At then end of one of those summers I decided to spend a week in New York and relax a bit having worked all summer. I stayed in a friend of a friends house for 2 nights in Woodlawn. Couldn't believe I could get the same items and newspapers from back home in a local shop in Woodlawn lol
    Would love to go back some day. Thanks for posting this video!

      @ProjectGaiaTravel  Рік тому

      That sounds like a wonderful memory. Yes Woodlawn really maintains that Irish feel that is hard to find so concentrated anywhere in the USA. Also what's interesting is that the area still has a lot of people from Ireland in addition to Irish Americans. There are a lot of Irish American neighborhoods in the USA, particularly in NYC, Chicago, and Boston- but not too many with so much Irish born.

    I'm from the North of Ireland, Antrim that is still under rule by the British ( Unfortunately ). I see a lot of Southern Irish making many many TikTok's and UA-cam videos saying Irish Americans aren't Irish. Let me make this clear, Irish Americans have Irish blood and Ancestors from our home Island. THEY ARE IRISH. Being from the North of Ireland even though i was born on the island with my Ancestors and all my family to this day, being told i'm not Irish. I took a DNA test in 2018, my results were 95% Irish with 5 % Scottish because i live in Ulster due to plantation many irish mixed with the scottish. Southern Irish are so up their own ass it's unbelievable . My family name comes from High Kings of Ulster, yet because the British scratched a line on a map the south takes that as word and doesn't feel like i'm irish.

      For sure, there are a lot of people of Irish decent living in America and all over the world- myself included. People tend to adopt alot of the ways of the new country that they or their immigrants immigrated too, however, it is interesting that a lot of the traditions and lifestyles from the original country remain even after many generations. It's good to see there are still Irish immigrants going to America, although it is very few. Most Irish immigrants go to the UK - 6 million British people have at least one Irish grandparent. PAUL MCCARTNEY is one. Australia is another destination - 30% of Australians have Irish ancestry. I think it's because the USA doesn't have a great social system. No universal healthcare. Not much paid annual leave or employee sick pay. No free healthcare is something Europeans, Scandinavians and Australians don't understand, especially for the richest economy in the world. It really is about time Americans fought for universal healthcare, it is a right for every citizen. JFK wanted it. Good bless Irish Americans.

    U know wat ive noticed all the real Irish and Italian blooded areas in NYC were actually the first hoods to he gentrified like even since the beginning of time with five points being the very first!!!!! ( well yes n no on that one but def improved ,it wasnt gentrified like todays gentrification no cuz China town n little Italy took over parts of it but with alot better infrastructure ) .........then Hells Kitchen in mid 80s gentrified !!!!To the outside world even though Italian n Irish gangs dominated the area , other yuppies n hipsters knew they wouldnt hurt them randomly n theyd be safe!!!.... .After the more urban burroughs of Irish hoods gentrified, irish moved further away to Queens!!! Woodside queens use to be a very tough area, Bensonhurt Brooklyn /howard beach was a breeding ground for Italian mafioso n it also gentrified along with Sunnyside n for watever reason again people felt Irish n Italian gangs wouldn't bother them n they felt safe being themselves..... Woodlawn aling McLean Ave into yonkers was always Irish but it def improved n is very nice today...., it actually was gentrified as well but it kept its irish identity more than others..... Brooklyn irish hoods all gentrified or white flight happened and black and PR moved in, then Queens was a known Burrough where Irish ,italian, and poles n other ethnic whites went to escape "city life" ...... Irish places like breezy point , Irish loved being close to the water if you notice they aspired n always tried eventually to settle near water..!!!!!....breezy point was ruined cuz of hurricane 🌀.... Thanks for video....Wats that other one Froggy Neck or.....nvm, God Bless!!!! U should do actual Little Italy next n show how it shrank ..... 🎉
