Great guide dude. I'm visiting New York for the first time in October with my son, for his 10th birthday. This has put my mind at ease a bit. I'm used to the London Underground and seems pretty similar! :)
Hi Jamie, yes it is very similar to the London system. Basically just have to know where the line ends to identify direction, which train is the fastest and if you have an express option, and if you need any transfers. @@295g295 Yes several avenues have both local and express tracks. These include, but are not limited to,
-Lexington Ave has the 4,5 as express and 6 local.
_Broadway has the N, R, Q, W (N and Q express and R,W local)
-8th Ave has the A,C,E (C,E local and the A express)

I just watched your video again till the end. I commented on the Synergy and how much it makes me feel alive to ride the train. I also watched some of the other videos on UA-cam and they were about how innocent people who were physically assaulted for no reason at all and no one helps them. I don't dare take the subway late at night and thankfully I live by a safe line which is the R train at the Bayridge avenue stop. I used to live by the F train line and it was safe, to my shock and disbelief it isn't anymore. I take the X27 bus to Manhattan if needed to avoid any trouble or walk over the Brooklyn bridge toward Brooklyn, then take the Atlantic avenue bus, by Trader Joes back to Bayridge. Nowadays even if you're minding your own business a violent person will assault someone for their own insane reason or they are criminally insane. Too bad we don't have more people like you riding the subway, very helpful, you have restored my faith in riding the subway again. Please make more content. Thank you again.

Yes, you definitely have to keep your wits about you when traveling on the subway and communicate confidence so that nothing bad happens. Most crime happens in the overnight hours, so if sticking to the daytime- you should be ok. But I understand your fears and frustrations. Luckily Bay Ridge is a pretty safe neighborhood. Wishing you good luck, and hopefully in time it returns to lesser crime.

While it may not be perfect, the New York City Subway has to be among the most incredibly engineered transportation systems ever built on Earth, and I marvel at it with excitement whenever I ride as a visitor. I truly can't wait to be able to visit the city again for this and many other reasons.

I’m from the Bronx shi crazy in the subway but it’s safe if yu just mind ya business n especially if you’re a civilian n don’t gang bang or nothing you’d be pretty much fine gang members don’t try to bother regular ppl but when asking for directions don’t be scared just be smart tho with who

Was their a (Diamond W train) service, I know about the diamond & double lettered trains, but was their a diamond W service between 2001 & now?
Yes there was an express w train from 2001 to 2010, the diamond means express- running from Astoria. It was discontinued in 2010 and reinstated in 2016 as non express service.

I’m arriving at JFK and planning on using the E train to get to 7th Avenue. Is it easy to transfer from the AirTrain to the subway? Also, I applied for a NYC Metrocard as I’m over 65 to get my 50% discount and I was delighted when I received my card in the post - I feel I’m already an honorary New Yorker! I’ve linked my metrocard to my credit card - can I now simply use OMNY for both the AirTrain and the subway, or do I still need a separate ticket for the AirTrain?

Hi Michael,
Yes it is easy to transfer from the airtrain to the subway. I would recommend you take the AirTrain to Sutphin Blvd to connect to the E like you mentioned then take the express E train to 7th Avenue in Manhattan and that will take you to points in Midtown. If you are going into Lower Manhattan, I would take the AirTrain to the A Train at Howard Beach then towards the Wall Street Area. Since you have the OMNY card you can pay for them all on there and it is a simple tap and go system like in London, however, you pay one fare- not by distance. Just been to NYC for a quick reccy trip before I go in April.
The AirTrain/ subway line E worked really well. I’m still a bit nervous about the subway though, because it is so complicated and the signage/ lack of clear maps on the platforms make it very user unfriendly. I suppose in time I’ll get used to it!

Hey awesome video! I do have a question - if you miss your stop how do you back track? Do stations have an area to switch platforms?
Thanks for watching. You don't have to go far but it won't be right across the platform. You would likely have to cross over or under the tracks on the other side to get the subway back in the other direction. so when you get off the side that you can see in the other direction at the platform- that is where you'd have to navigate to.

I feel more confident riding subway. Question do I need three metro cards or can I use one for all of us what you recommend best way to save money ? Also on that map is the trains from Brooklyn City Hall included? Please let me know I'm trying to prepare best I can.
Hi Faith. I’m glad you enjoyed the video! You should definitely be fine. The subway is pretty safe during busy hours and almost of Manhattan. You can use one card and swipe three times and will save you money because it costs $1 to get the metro card in the first place. If you’re going to be using the subway a lot I would recommend just getting the 7 day unlimited. It pays for itself in about 12 rides- which you likely will do if you’re in NYC for several days and just using the subway.

@@faith6272 you shouldn’t need a transfer if you are staying within the system (subway to subway) but if you are transferring to a bus- it will register the free transfer. If you leave the system and walk out of the station onto the street and into another station you will have to pay full fare twice. If you have the unlimited- you have to wait 18 minutes before you enter again.

Hello. Yes you can use one metrocard for up to 4 people. It will deduct each fare from the card up to four times and also store the transfer information if you transfer to a bus or another mode outside the system. Please let me know if you have any other questions at all and thanks for watching!
