    Check the date of manufacturing on those tires, might be good to keep for spares. Low chance they're still the originals from all that time ago. Also cracking on the sidewall is more dangerous than cracking on the tread, especially with tires that durable I wouldn't worry too much about the cracks you show. Just make sure the side of them aren't cracking, that's how you get blowouts like Westin 😁

    • @hummervs3278
      @hummervs3278 2 роки тому +6

      Whats odd to me, was an experiment I did with my 95 hummer. My 12 bolts with runflats and MT tires are 165 each (oof!)
      I put on a set of aluminum rim and hiway tread tires from a friends pickup that was 0.25” shorter measured on the truck so sidewall flex was accounted for. Chalk tested tread so it was optimal like my tires were. I saw zero gain in mpg or the 0-60 time. Ran two tanks of fuel to get descent comparison.
      The 6.5 diesel does get way worse mpg in hummer than pickups- so maybe already over taxed engine just couldn’t benifit at that level of gearing. Weight is not any more than my k3500 with 6.5 was, actually a hair less.
      Another Hummer anomaly? Haha

    • @Nevir202
      @Nevir202 2 роки тому +6

      @@hummervs3278 Most likely, you were basically running your engine at high RPM, minimum load, so reducing that load didn't reduce the fuel consumption any, as you still need the same amount, just to keep things turning.
      Also, noticeable fuel economy improvements from lighter wheels and tires are really hard to achieve in something with such bad economy in the first place.
      If you're getting 40MPG and get 5% improvement, you're now getting 42. If you're getting 10, a 5% improvement means you've getting 10.5.
      As to imperceptible change in 0-60, some kinda thing again. so much of the time is dependent on the heavy truck itself, and the inefficient drivetrain, so a small improvement like that would be hard to notice without doing a serious test, like repeated dyno pulls where you could make them as equal as possible, and even then the improvement might be measured in hundredths of seconds, maybe tenths if you were really lucky.

    We were actually taught during our advanced driving course to use the tie-down points (2:54 or so) for self-recovery just as you describe, when another vehicle is not available for recovery. Very much not ideal, of course, since you're moving roughly sideways, pulling by the wheel, while trying to roll it forward or backward, but it does WORK which is what matters when you *need* to get out of whatever situation you're stuck in.

    Random thought about the Tesla's not including a spare- My Dad' Model 3 picks up nails like a magnet. He's needed 6 new tires in 2.5 years of ownership, because the stock whels have sound insulation inside that makes it impossible to plug.

      Good point. He should route the power cables through an accessible cut point immediately off the battery pack so that EMS can cut the battery off from the rest of the wiring, devices, and structures. It should be accessible from the outside, easily noticable, and able to fit the snipper blades of the Jaws of Life. Maybe a small cavity like a big fuel filler compartment that has a big label and flush fit handles that allow the cover to be yanked off and opened easily but are totally unobtrusive and aerodynamic the rest of the time. 👍

    Man, those wheels... they look massive and awesome! Did you also take into acccount that EV's generally use different rubber compound more resistant against weight and wear? Most brands mark it with a "EV" badge. The snowflake had the letters M+S next to it, which means they're intended for mud & snow.

    • @joyfuflower
      @joyfuflower 2 роки тому +2

      While there are some out there that are built different and more and more are coming to market, most "EV" tires are just made to be quieter (they often have a foam insert) and with the kind of weight people put on their off-road rigs it shouldn't be an issue with off-road tires. It would be an interesting comparison to see the range with something like the Hankook Ventus S1evo3 EV variant (an actual performance EV tire) and the current tires he has, I wonder how significant the difference would be, if at all. I would also love to see if you can even get them in a size that fits haha

    Just as a "down the road" upgrade thought... since your Humvee is now going to be electric (and nice and quiet) you will be able to hear lots of noise that wouldn't normally come through with the loud engine. The Hummer H1 Portal Hubs use helical gears to cut down on some of that noise rather than the straight cut gears that the Humvees used. Naturally you will get more strength from the straight cut gears, but if it ends up being too loud, this might be an upgrade you may want to consider.
