I don't know how true this is, but when Piazza got elected to HOF with Griffey, they were the highest (Griffey) and Lowest (Piazza) drafted players to ever be elected
Chipper Jones was also #1 overall draft pick 3 years after Griffey... and Harold Baines made the HOF recently due to the "Today's Game Committee" and he was the first overall selection in 1977...
at the time (2016) tho Griffey was the first #1 overall selection to make it to the HOF tho so your statment is true just only stayed true for a couple years...
@@hookseybaby I understand that, but what I was trying to say is that HOF class had the highest overall pick WITH the lowest overall pick.
I doubt you’ll ever see that disparity again.

Couldn't agree more about Piazza.
He likely won't be a hall of famer, more like hall of very good. But I've admired Kevin Kiermaier for years now. 31st round pick from a little known college. Went on to be the best center fielder for a solid 6 year period, multi gold glove winner, platinum glove winner. One of the best all around players in the Rays franchise history. To me the Outlaw deserves an honorable mention and tip of the cap.
Keith Hernandez just might be the best defensive 1st baseman in MLB history
That Piazza HR was NOT the first MLB game after 9/11. It was the first MLB game in NY after 9/11. The Mets played in Pittsburgh after baseball resumed and then came home against the Braves.
I disagree with putting Piazza number one though I understand the thought process behind it. Just to me, the difference in value of a draft pick in the 10th round versus the 20th+ round is so small that a guy like Ryan or Pujols represents a much bigger draft steal than Piazza.
I don't know. I don't remember either Albert Pujols or Nolan Ryan getting their own Pert Plus commercial. Do you know anything about baseball?
If you consider he did what he did as a catcher it makes sense, plus 52 rounds is a lot. If pizza is 1B or DH he’d have way more impressive stats
12:50. While you may or may not know. Smoltz struggled at first for the braves but credited that Bobby cox kept giving him the ball and developed and became the man. Wanna say on a podcast Smoltz said he had lost like his first 11 or something big league starts
I double checked. That was the 1991 season. Started off 2-11 then the sports psychologist and Bobby etc got him righted. But had that turn around not occurred. He’d have just been a flash in the pan sort of

Thanks for having Keith Hernandez and I agree that he should be in the HOF. However he was only 17 years old when the Cardinals drafted him.

When I was a kid we went to Vero Beach to see a Dodger spring training game.
Piazza left in the 5th inning. He started jogging, to what I assumed was the clubhouse. A couple other kids and I saw him start running. We trailed behind. Mike! Mr. Piazza!! He slowed down a little. It was us few kids and Mike Piazza. He turned while still at a trot. Looked me dead in my little kid eyes and said, "fuck off kid" and took off. We were all pretty stunned to say the least. 😂 Guess he was having a bad day. Lol
OK so small correction about the famous Mike Piazza 9/11 home run. It wasn't the first game back from the tragedy. They had already played a few games in Pittsburgh prior to the series against the Braves. But that was the first game back in New York in the aftermath.
Hernandez didn’t get traded for arguments. His cocaine use wasn’t tolerated
honorable mention to the Seattle Mariners signing of undrafted David Arias....aka David Ortiz in 1992. Big Papi went undrafted and still the 2nd best DH of ALL TIME
I know he'll never be a Hall of Famer but Kevin Pillar was a LATE round pick, who has had a pretty good MLB career. The Bluejays only drafted Pillar to be a player to fill out their minor league rosters
That's the best part about low round draft picks you never know they're going to give you 15 to 20 years or burn out in two but most of the time they'll give you 10 also I miss all my old Montreal expos cards I used to have the unit I had the hawk I had Pedro Man it was cool having all those cars in your kid
My favorite pitcher is Nolan Ryan! That man could flat out pitch and is the all-time strike out King with over 5,700 strike outs!! He could also fight! lol!
Dallas was the Fightins farm director and led them to the 1980 World Series as manager. He got a chance to run the show In Chicago and proceeded to pick the Phillies dry to build a playoff team in 1984. He was they who drafted most of them - Ryno, George Vukovoch, Dick Ruthven, etc.

I said just before starting part 1, I’d be shocked if Piazza is not number 1 or 2. I just saw Nolan Ryan at 2. About to finish the video, but I know who number 1 is now. Lol. I love baseball and your videos! Keep up with the excellent content!
My favorite Nolan Ryan memory is when Robin Ventura charged the mound. Oddly my 2nd favorite memory is when will Clark hit his 1st hr off of him.
Nolan wupped Ventura that one day in 1990 or 1991.
I think the reason Mattingly and Hernandez aren't in the hall of fame is because they are not prototypical 1st basemen. They were as good with the glove as they were with the bat but weren't know for their power (even though Mattingly had more than he was given credit for). If you say : all time great contact hitter + elite defender with a bunch of gold gloves, it should be an automotic hall of fame induction, but apparently not for 1st basemen. Maybe if Todd Helton makes it, Hernandez and Mattingly would be reconsidered
It’s actually surprising as nowadays the numbers are scrutinized more so now than ever before. If you just look at what are considered the more important stats I think it favors both Hernandez and Mattingy now

Mike pizza is easily the biggest steal in mlb history went from the 62th round to Cooperstown (if only he won a world series with the mets)
How do you feel about Mark Buehrle as a draft steal? A solid consistant pitcher for 16 years was a 38th (1139 overall) round pick in 1998.

Because at that time in his career, he was a walk machine. He still was a walk machine until he got to the Astros, where he finally learned how to control that fastball.

You should be encouraged by a look at his second half; after an abyssmal first half, Javy actually slashed .268/.310/.413 once he acclimated to Detroit. I'm a Cubs fan and I believe he's capable of figuring it out and finding his pop there. Unfortunately there's not much hope for his plate discipline, but if he can tap into his game power again, with development from Haase, Greene, and Torkelson, that team could cause problems in a weak division.

Pretty sure Kirby Puckett was super low in the draft also. Kirby was Minnesota baseball.
Not really. Puckett was drafted under slightly different circumstances than most players these days. He was drafted in the first round, just not in the standard draft we are used to. He was drafted third over all in the January Draft which was a draft set up for players that graduated in the winter. This draft was discontinued sometime around '86 or '87.
My mom actually used to work with his sister and he went to college just down the road from where I live.
Pujols better be a unanimous 1st ballad Hall of Famer like Mariano Rivera (and Derek Jeter who was robbed by some jackass writer). Also, Piazza had the most beautiful swing I’ve ever seen.

How about make a top 10 (or more) of MLB players who were undrafted or rookie free agents?
Guys like Fernando Tatis Jr. of Dominican Republic and Johan Santana of Venezuela who were signed as international free agents at a young age, Ichiro Suzuki of Japan as a rookie free agent.
Considering that would, for the most part, be the "best non-US (or Canadian and US territories from 1991) players it kind of loses a lot of weight.
You would probably want to do a few lists to cover them (those who fell through the draft, players from NPB, and general international signings at least)
Piazza should have went into HOF a Dodger. PERIOD.
MVP on a last place Cubbie team. The Hawk was one of this most consistent players of his era.
When the Hawk arrived in the Windy City it was kind of ironic to me. The Hawk dealing with the hawk (cold wind in Chicago) Always liked Andre the Hawk. Cubs fan since 66. Finally got my wish in 2016.

I agree Kent deserves to be in the HOF but he wasn’t likable during his career (yees, that shouldn’t matter) and that works against him with the BBWAA. I believe he’ll be inducted by a future Veteran’s committee.
All of his numbers are better than sandbergs. More hits, rbis, hrs. Who knows maybe it’s truly the writers who colluded.
