    I got lay off almost 1 month ago, I think it has a big reason and I believe it, because I did not have enough time to dedicate/focus to learn to the things I wanted such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Webflow and Shopify, I am a mechanical engineer too and work on IT since 3 years ago as a Frontend dev, also worked with backend. In almost one month I finished the courses I wanted, I am practicing and doing freelancing, I am moving, creating synergia, energy, I wake up at 4 am, exercise, study and improving myself and even enjoying more life. Now, I will apply for jobs again. Everything is discipline and being on movement creating synergia. God is good !

      Love this energy Juan.... & Jan, thank you for creating this video / community. *Subscribed* ... Recently finished a Full Stack BootCamp (PERN Stack) and now I'm learning a cool framework (Next.js) to build my portfolio/blog with. After seeing your video, I am 85% convinced this a good path to make money/gain experience in... I noticed you said the market is shifting in about 2 years @codingwithJan , can you exand on that ?

      If you like the technical side of things:
      Custom Integrations / Shopify Functions / Checkout UI Extensions.
      Qualified App developers are in huge demand, and hard to find.
      This is not beginner friendly though!

    My journey started same as your's from Mechanical Engineer to Shopify Developer But the life is not changing as yours. I am stuck in the field whether i have to continue to Shopify Development or start working in the field of Mechanical Engineering. I tried hard to get projects but all in vein. The clients demands more and paid less.

      Hi Muhammad, this probably doesn't have to do with your technical skills but sounds more like deficits on the sales and marketing side.
      Here are a few ideas
      - learn more about pricing strategies, and make sure you raise your rates
      - are you presenting yourself professionally enough? (Compare your public appearance with other developers and agencies. LinkedIn profile, Portfolio, communication)
      - consider partnering with agencies who already work with established brands

    Can't say how much I'm inspired by your videos :) Nowadays I work as a Support Agent for a theme developer agency and I want to migrate to development, but I'm having a hard time to focus and understand what are the next steps. You make the path clear and easy to follow, thank you so much Jan! I think it is time to stop being shy and promote myself on some freelancer platforms :D

    • @CodingWithJan
      @CodingWithJan  4 місяці тому +1

      You can do it! :-)
      Try to mix in LinkedIn and post about some of the things you've learned in your current job, tips for beginners, experiences you had, or cool client projects you worked on. (You can check back with the agency, but they should be cool with it, because you promoted the agency and your own expertise)
      Cheers man!

    Jan really great information
    Which course would you prefer on udemy or any platform for beginners to learn shopify development?

    • @CodingWithJan
      @CodingWithJan  4 місяці тому +1

      Great question! I think this depends a bit on your preferred learning style and how much you can or want to invest. Of course I'm biased here, but I genuinely believe our Bootcamp Freemote is the best platform if you're looking for an end-to-end solution. (step-by-step curriculum, tons of practice projects, personal code reviews, personal portfolio reviews, mentors you can talk to, live calls, freelancing resources, support if you get stuck on your first paid jobs, access to the community).
      Our main goal is that you see a positive return on your investment quickly.
      If you want to start smaller, and rather use time as your main investment, self-study and other courses can be good too. You can start with a course on HTML CSS JS. Then maybe one of the courses by Chris the Freelancer or Weeklyhow. Both of them are good teachers too. You can also find freelancing-specific resources out there. So you could use this developer roadmap video right here, and look for the bits and pieces.
      Hope this is helpful. :-)

    Hey Jan, that video is on point. What would you say are the reasons for companies to choose Shopify freelancers over agencies?

    • @CodingWithJan
      @CodingWithJan  3 місяці тому

      Awesome. :-)
      Freelancers are usually preferred if clients want a bit more flexibility or better deals. (because agencies have to charge a bit more due to their complexity in project management for example)

  • @moatazsaber3369
    @moatazsaber3369 4 місяці тому +7

    Sorry Jan, but I feel like this video is over simplifying everything! you didn't even mention that people need to learn JavaScript. Also discovering how to edit theme files for the first time is not a simple process at all, as you know, people need to learn a lot of things about the file structure, liquid, metafields, and more.

    • @CodingWithJan
      @CodingWithJan  4 місяці тому +1

      Hey, no worries, constructive feedback is always welcome! :-)
      I did mention the learning JavaScript part, parallel to working on your first simple projects and of course, there are some simplifications if you try to condense a 6-12 weeks action plan into a 10-minute video, but this is genuinely the strategy I'd follow starting from scratch.

    • @moatazsaber3369
      @moatazsaber3369 4 місяці тому +2

      @@CodingWithJanah, I missed it, I repeated the video again and found where you mentioned JavaScript. I still believe this is too late to learn javaScript in this order, in my opinion it should be directly after HTML/CSS, however, I can understand why you added it here. Actually this is a bit different/strange roadmap. I still think it’s over simplyfing the process, hope this can work for people who are just starting!

    I want to join freemote bootcamp, but I don't see the price. The button "get started" send to a free strategy call, I know it is a good thing before committing, but I don't have the ability to do a call for now, and I need to see how much it cost in order to finish and organize the planning I'm working on. Thanks 😁

    • @CodingWithJan
      @CodingWithJan  4 місяці тому

      Hey, no problem! We removed all pricing on our website a while ago, because we like to explain pricing in context. We also have various options for payment plans to make the program as accessible as possible and it's just easier to explain these when having a chat. It's also important for us because we can check back regarding your current skills and goals, to see if Freemote is a good fit to begin with.
      If calls are unavailable right now, it might just mean that the calendar is booked out. We only open slots 2-3 days into the future. :-)

    What did you mean with "the whole ecosystem is moving upmarket" ? Mainly Shopify Plus or Shopify Apps?

    • @CodingWithJan
      @CodingWithJan  4 місяці тому +2

      Yes, I believe because of competition it will become increasingly hard to get by just offering the most basics development services. Beyond the beginner-friendly services though, right now there is a huge demand for more advanced customizations, app development, and custom integrations. Also if you look at all the things released at Shopify Editions this year, a lot of the features focus on improving the platform and serving the existing customer base. (Where in recent years I was under the impression the main goal was more acquiring new merchants and getting more users on the platform). We also see more and more enterprise brands moving to Shopify, and theme vendors working on new themes specifically for the needs of these brands. So my prediction is that in the near future the most lucrative services and most in-demand services will one level up / slightly more advanced / geared towards established brands. (smb's to enterprise)

    Hey Jan! Going through Freemote now after learning React and have a question about something that makes me nervous you mention at 2:30-3:05. Are you saying Shopify Development might become oversaturated like Frontend seems to be now in the current job market, or are you saying that only having a skillset of setting up simple stores for people will likely dry up soon?

    • @CodingWithJan
      @CodingWithJan  Місяць тому +1

      Awesome!! :-)
      So the pure service of "store setups" is becoming more of a commodity. (because it is very beginner-friendly)
      Right now it's still possible to make money just doing store setups, but looking forward 2 years into the future I'd try to specialize quickly. (and become as qualified as possible)
      Qualified devs are still in high demand.
      We can also talk more on the Q&A calls if you want.
      Cheers

    Is learning Liquid and Hydrogen also necessary for being Shopify developer?

    • @CodingWithJan
      @CodingWithJan  4 місяці тому +1

      Liquid is important, but you will learn it while making your first customizations/building sections. Hydrogen I would not recommend as a beginner, because headless is only relevant for a few selected enterprise brands. :-)
