Thanks for the video. This is exactly how I built up my Gen 8 madone here in Colorado. 50 aero chainring with the 13sp xlpr. It’s been pretty sweet. Love the videos. Keep them coming.
Aye, you finally linked with 5Dev 🔥. This is exactly what I would do with the new XPLR groupset too. Perfect for a 1x road bike . Now, I need that trickle-down to happen soon for Force and Rival, so I can actually afford it.
This is absolutely awesome - kudos to you and 5Dev for making this. I cannot wait to be able to obtain it - 5Dev, I am happy to make a video; installing it on a new 2024 Crux Comp
I've been running a 1x12 all road setup, and I constantly switch between the 10-36 and 10-44 cassette. This one basically slaps a 46 on the back of the 10-36, would be the perfect solution for me in the southern appalachians.
Awesome stuff by 5dev and great transition to Red XPLR 13 speed. Can’t wait for its introduction to Force and Rival in the upcoming year(s). Finally, 1by has reached perfection. I definitely will buy my next bike with 13 speed.
I bet we see SRAM expand to UDH Red r-der in the near future with a road range cassette. UDH just makes sense. I have it on my Supercaliber SLR 9.9 and my Checkmate SLR 9. Works flawless.
Woah. With you on range. I'm in SoCal, with double digit gravel grades, and GRX 2x with 11-40 cassette is not overkill. In fact, when I think I'm "taking it easy" by spinning a 31/40, I actually go just as fast or faster than when I'm grinding a "race" gear.
Udh for road bikes is the future for sure. I have this and transmission for gravel and mtb and they are flawless. The transmission on mtb does shift bit slow, prefer the red xplr is way faster and still good shifts.
issue with transmission you are stuck with 1 cassette ratio. a no go in the roadie market. need mutliple options tight cluster for the flats and low gear for mountains.
@@spartanbike2260Instead of changing cassette, one changes the chain ring. The SRAM Red crankset has all sorts of chain ring options from SRAM and others like Wolf Tooth.
Thanks for the video. This is exactly what I've been contemplating for a road group. For northeast Georgia and western Carolinas this is perfect. 46T with 10-46 here is the perfect combo.
Using new XPLR on a 1x road bike has been my primary objective with my next bike and the challenge is definitely the limited amount of bikes with UDH (technically SRAM says the minimum chainstay length for XPLR is 415mm and the Tarmac/Madone have 410mm which may not make a big difference but who knows 😂)
Thanks. This is good to know. I sure hope thirteen drops below Red level soon. I like your road bike thinking. I'm currently using a Ratio cage to run the non t-type XPLR cassette on a Force rear mech on a 1x.
So if you take the thru-axle out, does the whole UDH + rear derailleur fall out? Because you used the thru-axle to install them all together in the first place.
Mtb transmission use cassette mapping and timed shifts, which is what makes the shifting so god. Red xplr doesn't have this feature, which is why it shifts faster, but not as smooth
I hope they come out with more cassette options for 13spd AXS. I’d love to put this on my Blackheart Road Ti (also has a UDH) that is currently 1x12 (same gearing you had on your tarmac), but I can’t do big climbs on it because 50x33 is not a real climbing gear lol
Get the 10-46 cassette will be great for you on the road. I have it on a checkmate and was in 42x13 gear at 26 mph and still had 3 harder gears left. The gear ratios for road riding are just fine. On a road bike can do a 46-50t front ring to go even faster and still around 1:1 easy gear. And the performance is amazing, great shifting/braking.
@@mister_ray yeah I know, just talking about my current 1x12 road bike with a 10/33 cassette. I would love to be able to swap wheels or cassettes from 10/46 for a big climbing day or a 10/33 or 36 for fast group rides and flatter rides. I run into a lot of both in CO, so that’s the only thing holding me back from making the swap.
SRAM calls for 35 N-m when installing full-mount derailleurs, so I’m wondering how the 5DEV mod achieves enough clamping force when thru-axles are meant to be torqued between 10-12 N-m…

I am dreaming of a 10-34 13-speed. It's pretty flat where I live, so I am riding 1x, but when I use 10-33, I am missing the 16 tooth and when I use 10-28 I miss the 33.
@@danTesDan I'm hoping third party companies like garbaruk will produce chainrings for the threaded power meter spider. That would really open it up for more road configurations if you could get a 52t that would work with the spider.

@@danTesDan I think a lot of people can and will get by with a 46/10-46 setup for mixed use. I've been using a 48t with 10-52 eagle xx, and I'm now in the position where I would benefit from something like a 50t as far as meeting my physical capacity and having a slightly more efficient chain line in my most comfortable gears. Third party companies do a good job of providing affordable options for customization, and while SRAM is most likely capping it (for now) at 46t chainrings because they don't want to cannibalize sales in their road groupsets or something, it would give everyone the ability to do it outside of their plans.
This is just Eagle mullet with extra steps and thousands more dollars ... but with less range A 48t chainring and 10-52 XX1 cassette would be far superior because as it stands, you don't even have a 1:1
@@Glebaka An XG-1299 has 10,12,14,16,18 on the low end. A RED XG-1391 is 10,11,12,13,15. Wow, an 11t cog. You gain virtually nothing and still lose out on the bailout gear. Literally a pointless waste of money.
@@Glebaka I think there are definitely reasons to choose an XPLR setup over an Eagle Transmission one (shifting speed, lighter weight, 13 speed for a slightly better gear progression if any of those are important to you). However, for the past year I have been riding a gravel bike with a mullet setup 48t in front with 10-52 rear, and I experimented putting 65mm aero road wheels on it and it worked fine for road riding in the 25-30mph range. Granted, both my bikes having 36cm handlebars may have something to do with that as well, but I really enjoy the smooth guaranteed shifting of the XX Eagle Transmission derailleur and would probably prefer it to be smooth instead of super fast. It would just be nice to have that smooth performance with the weight of XPLR 😂 (and 13 speed lol)
