After a series of tryouts I was drafted by the San Jose Earthquakes in 1979 and then released before the start of the season. Thank you Pablo and thank you Club Eleven.
In the Solomon Islands (South Pacific) back in 94 there was no live T.V shows. There was like... a special window of opportunity for the whole country to link into Australia's satellite system to watch the World Cup. The only way we could watch soccer live, was by going to a neighbor's house, who had a TV with a long-range antennas....and someone had to climb the roof constantly to readjust the antenna on the roof, because of bad signals. But it was worth it. Watching the world cup 94 live on TV was like greatest ever. Brazil v Netherland, USA v Colombia, wow amazing times. lol
Been a fan of Pablo's writing for a long time, he's great and this is very cool. Never thought I'd see another VHS copy of MLS Golazo besides the one on my shelf, but not surprised he has it. Hell yeah
Really cool, I fell in love with the game right before the 94 World Cup, I remember watching the Germany game and realizing it was the first soccer game I had ever watched on TV haha. Thanks for the memories!
Wow! All this resonates with me. I worked the 94 World Cup, I met Charlie Stillitano there and then onto the Metrostars, I still have my last game ticket from the last Pele game against Santos, I have a few original MLS jerseys unfortunately I sold many of them. My all time 15 minutes of fame was playing against Johann Neeskens (RIP) and the Cosmos at Giants Stadium with my club team. A scrimmage game and we were trounced lol! Good memories and so cool to see this . I still have my COSMOS game day programs etc.
I'm a big fan of Pablo, love following him on Twitter and seeing the random pieces he posts from time to time. Really insightful guy when it comes to the sport too, of course.
Pablo is an American soccer legend and soccer may only be his second biggest interest. Let’s hope he does a garage sale before giving it all to the HOF.
Pablo has been there as ive grown up as a consistent voice for soccer. Im glad to see that his interests are getting coverage and that i can get a beer with him at Lymans!
I’ve never heard anyone else describe themselves exactly the way I describe myself. “Some people when they find one little chunk of information out they’re satisfied with that. And there’s other people who are like, No. I need to know like everything about this in absurd detail.” That’s me. First thing I did when I became a soccer fan was read the largest, most comprehensive book about the sport that I could find. The Ball is Round: A Global History of Soccer, by David Goldblatt. Then read everything else I could get my hands on.
I collected baseball cards in the early 90s for a few years. Have boxes and binders at my parents house in Canada. Now I live in Japan and started collecting again, so I have two collections.
I was 5 during the 86WC which I don't remember watching, I sporadically watched the 90WC. But I watched every single game in the 94WC. 94 is when I began to love soccer. Can't wait for 2026!
I was collecting California Surf stuff for a while. I went to a bunch of their games as a kid and really dig their logo. It didn't seem like there was much resale value, so it was definitely more for personal nostalgia.
It’s really to see a different side to collecting. There is definitely something of value and worth when it is more than just the shirt. The history behind the thing and the story behind it. I am personally a kit collector, and at many points it feels quite empty as compared to the 10 shirts you may own in your closet because The desire for more information that you uncovered in the process.
Extremely dope. I've talked my fair share of shit to Pablo on Twitter as a DC United fan but he is undoubtedly a very interesting guy and I would be lying if I said I wasn't jealous of his collection and experiences.
My boss fled Iran and settled in England during the Iranian Revolution. In his late terns he came to the states and came to try out for whatever team trained at the Coliseum. As him and other dudes were getting ready a lady pulled uo and asked what they were doing. “Ma’am we are getting ready to try out”. She replied “what do you mean, the league went under already. It no longer exists”. I may have butchered a bit but man was that a hard story to hear.
I'm not even remotely interested in Soccer whatsoever..in fact, I really dislike it. But I can appreciate what this dude is doing to preserve a forgotten moment in time. i love retro sports attire so from that aspect this got me hooked.
I spent the day with the irish national team in 1994. I left with 7 autographed jerseys and 2 autographed balls. 94 WC was great Just in case ur wondering im irish.
What an awesome dude. Man, if yr back alone in yr room with all yr dumb shit like you said and happen to be reading the comments thanks for sharing, it's these little stories that make life a little bit more special. Yr awesome.
Not sure about a collectible item, but his written piece on Maradona’s time is definitely worth checking out! www.nytimes.com/athletic/2062114/2020/09/14/god-was-in-town-the-night-diego-maradona-played-in-canada/
94WC was the first tournament I followed as a fan, at 14. First footballer whose name I knew was alexi lalas. That final was the worst I've ever seen, best to get the worst out of the way ASAP. 30 years hence, football has been a blast
We head an old barber down here San Antonio that had A Wall Full of original 1970s San Antonio Thunder stuff. Once he died I think someone scooped it up ?

Very Good . Well Done . I travelled to USA 94 on 3 occasions from England .. watching 6 games . I really enjoyed it .
Thank you Peter. Hope to see you back on this side of the pond in ‘26!
The US Soccer Federation should acquire the entire collection and open its museum of US Soccer History.
