I learned how to play that lick, but it really takes something more than knowing what notes to play to create tone and emotion like frusciante. one of the guitar goats, best ever

LAST resort is tabs. You will absorb the sound of the style better and in the long term it'll help develop your own style and ability to listen and play on the spot. My main practice/fun with guitar other than making songs, playing songs, and improvising over songs; is literally throwing my entire music collection on shuffle, and just learning the song on the spot. Its so much fun to develop that ability and be able to play most songs on the spot after a single listen. I'm not trying to brag about this because I'm far from great at it compared to other people, I just want to let you know of what worked for me to get to a point of what i consider satisfaction, ya know? It's really fun to develop your ear

That finger strength is nuts, he could attack the strings with such raw ferocity in those days, before his abuse. Although he definitely perfected his overall musicianship later imo.
There's nothing tortured about this. Here he's expressing the ambitions and happiness of almost a child. He was definitely using drugs then, but they hadn't become a problem yet, like with most addicts.
