Solar and wind are a scam tho. You can literally put a pole in your yard and get energy from the atmosphere and the planet. Tesla proved this in Colorado. This is also the reason he was killed.
The industry HATES THE IDEA. Keep that in mind.
I believe it is Florida where Koch industries is building a solar power plant and Koch bribed some politicians to pass a law that PENALIZES homeowners for producing more electricity than they use. Basically if you put any electricity into the grid you will be fined $100.00 that month. They don't want any competition.

Anybody on the Octopus Energy Agile tariff in the UK has had the most incredible day today, being paid to use electricity from 10:30 am until 4pm, the same thing happened last Sunday, and it is happening again tomorrow.
...could be the way to establish universal basic income...since AI, robots and automats are nabbing our jobs away in an exponential manner.
I also enjoyed being paid to use as much electricity as I could for 5 and a half hours during the middle of the day yesterday (Saturday) with Octopus energy. If I had a heat pump I would have switched it on and air conditioning to wast some more. To my knowledge, It was the longest consecutive less than free electricity I’ve had on the Agile tariff since joining in July last year. Fantastic stuff Octopus, keep up the good work.
Not so sure on the solar panel fence though. Solar panels have a long way to fall in price before they get to £50 for a 6’ slot in panel. Even if they do eventually get that cheap, they won’t produce much, if any power with the bushes, trees and other general flowering plants casting shadows on the cells. Not to mention having to wire them up in the neighbor side of the fence.
Octopus energy is nice. max. 20 cents/kWh for EV loading during the night while the average price for electricity is around 26cents/kWh.

4:00 this a really important point! We need to make sure that even those without their own property are able to benefit from zero energy prices.
It's already being used for canopies and cladding as BIPV.
I just had a 7m aluminium slat fence installed. Materials cost $3250 and labour was just under $1000. All up that’s about the cost of a 4kW PV system. Think I may have chosen the wrong material 🤔

At my insignificant level I haven’t paid for electricity for four years. However, I acknowledge that everything around me, from street lights to the internet requires electricity that I pay for in products and services.
AFTER you solar cells pay for themselves then they last maybe another 10 years and you have to buy better ones,
buy a used EV battery out of a junk yard for a DIY powerwall.

@@rRobertSmitha DYI system can have a payback in as little as 5 years if you are running an EV. New solar panels are warranted for 25 years typically and that is to 20% degradation. They don’t just stop working.
The most likely thing to fail is the inverters after about a decade.
Adding solar above south facing windows as awnings allowing heat and light in heating season and blocking in cooling along with using it as siding could add to a design if done aesthetically pleasing.
Very clever,Ive seen this in Europe. Hot countries are doing this with water aqueducts. Cover the channel and cut down on evaporation at the same time.

Here in Canada power plants are built and operated by tax dollars. I sent an email to a member of parliament back in the early 2000’s to finance the placement of solar panels on every public and private roof possible feeding back into the grid in place of building an expensive power plant. I never received a response. It made sense back then and even more sense now.

Here we have electricity prices PER HOUR. And our electricity prices are negative many times. Yes even today a kWh at the afternoon are -5 EuroCent. Mostly Charge my Tesla then. :) I get paid to charge my tesla. I never got paid for filling my previous car with gasoline. And currently average price per liter here is 2.2 Euro!!! Which is expensiveee and it goes up and up. ANd electricity prices go down and down.

A recent headline in the US upper Midwest reads, "We Energies proposes nearly 15% rate increase". A company official says 85% of the increase is due mostly to solar projects.
Solar Panels in Netherlands (Where the picture of the Fence comes from) has Tax exemption. We pay 0% tax on solar panels. And for battery storage systems we can get the Tax back from the government. :) Zo zero tax. And yes solar panels are DIRT cheap. The material is like 25% of an install. So if you can install it yourself you saved even that 75% of the cost.
Yep, flat roof so I did it myself. Still working fine after 10yrs. Every KWh they make is free, they paid for themselves years ago...
As electricity prices fall, the payback for solar installation also would fall. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
The 400 000 balcony power plants in Germany are only the registered ones. Last year, when the numbers were much lower, there was a recall from company DEYE, who has a market share about 20-25%. They had to recall (which in fact was adding an adapter part) more than 400 000 inverter only in Germany. So the real numbers are expected to be much higher.
The price for a balcony power plant with 600-800W has come down now to 250 - 300€ plus fixation material and transport and it produces about 600-800 kWh per year. Means return of interest within less than 4 years.
The price for the moduls are now below 50€ per square meter, which makes it very attractive as construction Material.
Car ports or fascades cladding with PV modules are cheaper than solutions with most other materials.

1000 € in 2021 now I bought the second for 250 €. Prices are falling rapidly. I still think about buying a third and fourth as roof for my tomato’s and use these with a small battery for over night supply😄
Balcony solar outside apartments and along parking garages is quite a concept.
I always thought of using the roof of a parking garage, but just the south facing wall would work. Interesting.
I was just thinking this same thing a few months ago. I’m planning my retirement home on a piece of land and my back fence would be made of bi-facial solar panels. Doing the math it would be just an expensive as a wooden fence and the power supply would make it a no-brainer.

All good, but, try to find a charging controller board 7 years from now. The industry has to get Standard Build rules into effect.
Solar fence is possible in my area now. 240w panels are $35 usd and sometimes they go on sale for BOGO.
It is very windy today in the UK, as a result gas is supplying only 2.43% of our electricity ( it is normally 40-50%) and the price is £-18.75/MWh yes that is minus on a normal working Monday in April! As others have said all weekend we have had long periods of negative prices.
Lets not forget what this means for developing countries. It will make a huge diffetence.
I am in Melbourne and have many panels aligned with the fence, we get old panels $10 per panel. Pergola facing north is enclosed by solar panels connected in parallel to prevent heating of panels in shading.
I have done the same thing. I also mounted free used solar panels on ladders. They can be moved and the angle changed with the seasons.
Great idea for use of solar panels, in regions that have predictable sun. For the rest of us, wind seems more of an option.
“Regions that have predictable sun” covers about 80% of the world’s population in tropical and temperate climates. And for the rest, a mix of wind and solar so the can take advantage of the much higher summer sun and strong winter winds.

You pointed me to his book. The interesting part is he is not manufacturing solar or batteries. He is just using tried and true engineering adoption rate curves to make predictions. Happy for the future.
If you could get a solar panel that had built-in insulation on the back, and simple structural and electrical connectors on the sides they would make a great building material. Even the ones with defective cells could be used for exterior wall panels on the shady side of your house.

All new built neighbourhoods have solar roofs over here in The Netherlands. I have 24 panels and think I need to get more. I am contemplating making a new solar fence just now.
I sure haven’t had a check from my electricity supplier. I’m paying, “all in”, 22 cents CDN per kilowatt hour. And, you know what? I’m not complaining!
How many Panels do you have Sam? Tell us about it. I have 50 solar panels in Groningen Nederland. Production 11.000 kWh every Year since 2012. And 12 years no degradation. Easily 50 Years Production. Solar Panels never Stop.
Yet in Australia you can buy 'old' panels for $10 each , and some large scale solar farms have shipping containers full of 'old' panels.
Obviously they do not last for 50 years ,,sometimes not even 15 years and they fail.

Solar Panels last 50 Years. I have 50 Solar Panels for 12 years now. Totally Perfect. Last year record production. Getting better by the Years.👍🙂

@@Leonardo555ZZZDo you know they know longer work? Or is it just that production is no longer up to spec? Modern panels lose 0.3-0.5% efficiency per year. I’d love to see numbers on catastrophic failure rates, so I can more easily rebut the idea that they don’t last.
Solar panels have no chemical reactions, and no moving parts. There’s not much to wear out. So why would they fail?
When there's a demand for new technology some will always ask "how can I make quick money on this" so the prices are pushed up for the end user. Be it EV's, solar panels, home energy storage, so on, so on. It's not the product itself that's not affordable, it's the middlemen, investors, dealerships, installers and profit hunters that all have their bit to add on. In the UK your new car has value added tax, you have a road tax added to be able to drive it on UK roads (EV's will be subject to this in 2025), Insurance Premium Tax is added to your already inflated vehicle insurance and your liquid fuel is heavily taxed. So the government wants me to change to new technology but they've already lowered the new vehicle incentive on EV's. it's all about incomes and revenues for everyone.
People with solar panels never factor in the prices of land and taxes. Sure you get "free" energy but the investment to get to that point is usually unobtainable by the average person. 90% of people do not have access to land or roofs to even pay to install solar
Any time anything can last longer like EV batteries and solar panels there will be less waste and less need to recycle.

You still have to build the frame for the house and make a traditional roof upon which to place the panels. Panels are not waterproof and provide no insulation for the interior. Nuts hopium naivitae.

It's more pressure for batteries, other energy storage and industries that can take advantage of the peak.
Explaining to people electricity will be free would be like going back 50 years and explaining to people long distance phone calls would be free some day. They wouldn't be able to comprehend it.

How is it free ? Panels , installation , transmission ,storage , back up for night , cloud and snow cover...It actually works out more expensive than using coal ,nuclear , hydro and gas like we used to. That is why electricity prices are rising in direct correlation with solar and wind increases.

They don't let you out enough.
Solar works great in some areas, but not in all areas. Wooded areas casts shadows, and we cant just cut down the trees to provide more light because of things like timber rights. Not only that, but every tree that gets cut would reduce carbon removal on a massive scale. Solar works great in areas where trees and mountains are not involved, but its terrible in the winter on the north side of a mountain. There are downsides to solar that many people have not considered.
Green energy is a cash grab. Some people it can work. But 90% of people do not have access to land or roofs for solar/wind. Nuclear is the best option but politicians can't make that stock market money on thorium or uranium. Only solar and wind...........
I have used solar panels as awnings.
The problem with solar is it swings the price of power wildly. This puts baseline power produces out of business. What is needed is extreme peaker power production to make use of this type of power from solar.
You say “put baseline power plants out of business” like it’s a Bad Thing. :) Why not just use batteries instead of peaker plants? We know our daily (and hourly) power consumption patterns. We know when the sun rises and when it sets and what its angle will be. We know how much cloud cover we can expect. Start with enough battery to run the community 24/7 on the sunniest day of the year. Add enough to cover the darkest day of the year. Add more to cover however many days of cloudy weather. Eventually, you can reach 24/7/365 solar power.
@@davestagner Batteries are very expensive and they need to be replaced after awhile. The general rule if you are going to store energy you want to avoid converting the energy into a different form. This is the problem with hydro and batteries in that you are converting the energy into something else which involves conversion losses. There is also the problem like in California of extreme seasonal differences in current renewables power production and the inability to always have power when you need it. This is why Bill Gate's Natrium reactor setup with storage makes so much sense. Here power is stored as the actual heat that is being produced hence no conversion losses. Properly designed heat storage tanks can have very low energy loss over time. The salt storage medium is also the cheapest way to store energy and never needs replacing. The other thing is both the stored heat output and the output of the reactor can be added together resulting in a doubling of the power output when needed. If this maximum power output is produced at times of electrical power shortage and high electricity prices high levels of profit can be realized. Essentially because the power plant is taking advantage of producing it's power when electricity prices are high this plant can be profitable even if it's levelized cost of producing it's power may cost more than systems that can't produced power during these high electrical price times. Such a system actually makes it possible for more renewable power to be used by backing up the renewables when that can't produce the required amount of power.
The cost of solar can never be zero. Storage and panels will still cost money to make. But of course there can be synergies that make it very cheap, like in the case of dual use when you make a fence out of solar panels. It is however a fairly expensive fence...Not to forget the grid, unless you are 100% self-sufficient which is almost impossible in dense urban environments.
The people who push for solar are rich privileged people. The average home price in the US is almost 400k. That's means a 20% down payment would be 80k......
@@RipliWitani I've never been rich and I've "pushed for solar" all my life. Solar and Wind are the cheapest form of energy once the system is established. And it is so for home buyers at any rate. If you say that the avarage home price in the US is 400k then installing a solar system with a 10kw/h battery +c heat pump will be a pittance compared to the whole house price. But it will virtually bring you energy bills down to zero after 5-10 years...
With a variable power supply like wind or solar I can see how the price for power could go to 0 at times but it seems to me at other times when wind wind and solar were producing at a lower level power would have to be sold at a fairly substantial price in order to cover the capital cost of installation. The cost of the solar or wind installation with batteries has to be recouped with profit somehow.

Anyone who has had to replace a cedar fence knows how expensive it is, it's more than a new roof. It wouldn't take much for solar panels to be cheaper. And it's only a matter of time until there are clear solar panels that can be used for windows. We already have see through TVs, solar is next. It would be great if they could also filter out harmful rays and let only safe light though.

It surprises me that whoever thought of this - great in concept - didn't find all of the massive pitfalls -- and they are MASSIVE. Absolute none consideration right now for anyone unless you just have a lot of money and don't care as much about ROI
I wish PG&E in California would get the word. Right now, electricity prices are pushing 50 cents or more per kilowatt hour. They've gone up about 50% in the last 5 years and probably doubled in the last 10 years.
Too many renewables and not enough coal , nuclear ,gas and hydro.

80% of the cost is distribution, which means there's not enough local generation. Costs in cities that generate their electricity locally, using mostly renewables, are charging on the order of 20 cents per kWh. More solar rooftops would mean more local generation and less distribution cost - at least, in an ideal world it would, which is not the one promoted by PG&E. And California uses plenty of hydro and gas, along with some nuclear, to generate electricity.

It will come down quickly. But prices are already worth it.
People talk about solar fences, awnings, etc. Problem is that there are certain restrictions to what you can do architecturally, and some of these solar things are outside of the restrictions. The construction has to be approved and they may not allow the solar panels to be used. Aa few panels can generate hundreds of volts so that's just one thing that has to be dealt with. Solar panels can get very hot, so that's another issue to be dealt with.
Roofs could be covered with an EPDM membrane with solar panels covering the whole roof other than ridges and valleys.
Siding could be replaced with entire walls covered in solar panels instead.
High-rise buildings could have a mix of glass curtain walls and solar panel curtain walls, including those that are double sided and partially see through where desired.
Is it so that the doom-mongers warnings of limited silver production were wrong and there is more than enough silver and future prospects to fulfill the requirements for a masive expansion?
The solar panels used previously that I use were cheaper than plywood a few months ago. Even panels that are beyond repair could still be used structurally. With foam insulation between panels used like siding you can form an incredibly strong sandwich. If used for housing you could use drywall on the inside and panels on the outside. 4-6” of open cell insulation between them makes a strong barrier to heat and a structurally stable wall. If you don’t like the way they look, could put other siding over them.
But left exposed even marginal panels on exterior walls would produce much of the energy required for a dwelling.

More realistic we get to zero price now than the 50s nuclear energy predictions. Electricity prices will be more about service - leccy itself will be more like mobile/broadband data prices and it's down to the quality of service, guaranteed rates, then amount

Where are these solar panels made and what are they made with?
We can get electricity costs below zero, from solar, during certain parts of the day. So as a sound bite, it's a bit misleading. What one wants is a 24/7 match. This is one of the goals of Google, which also prefers clean energy, to run their data centers. But it's not easy. And you still needs some dis-patchable resources. This is when the whether totally does not cooperate (dunkelflaute). Though if the solar drops some more, one can "over panel" (say by 5x). Along with this is the needed drop in costs for storage.
Domestic & commercial Solar utility integrated with structural roofs, windows, fences etc. is a jolly fine concept.
Unfortunately, the cost of storage and various electromagical stuff like MPPT load regulators, inverters and VPP network adaptations are still very high by comparison. I do not know the cost of Tesla's new PW-3 that supposedly integrates most of this stuff but I expect that to be the next trend. Boxing turnkey systems into a single cabinet instead of filling a garage wall with clobber has to be better.
One would hope that out-facing solar fences are not as vulnerable to vandalism by testosterone charged, petrol-head teens with baseball bats - as are mailboxes.
But cynical comments aside, very cold winter climates with lots of snow, have shown that vertical panels fair way better overall - because snow does not persistently cling to them and they are therefore more practical than roof-top panels. Energy every day, all year round, but way less in winter of course. If it were me, I would mount the panels atop a 1 metre high wall to ensure that snow could be cleared on occasion without fear of damage to the panels or having them covered in snow drifts.
Vertical solar panels also makes heaps of sense for high +/- latitudes, where vertical panels inevitably gather more energy because of the perennially low inclination of the sun at zenith. A little altitude will also mitigate obstructions like parked vehicles on the roadside at frontage.
Sadly, ATM NSW has only 1% renewable electricity. The wholesale cost is 47 per KWHr. We need a lot more batteries.

Sadly electrical prices in the negatives wont produce lower retail power cost. Australia currently has its highest retail rices for electricity, however wholesale prices are at their lowest in many years (at least lat time I checked a couple of months ago).
Australia is the perfect example of where green energy will go. The government will spend billions on subsidies and the cost of utilities will be the same or more expensive.
Balconypanels in Germany are no constructionmaterials, the balconys exist for decades and the tenants add up these panels. These sets are also relatively expensive, nobody would build a fence of it, for that you would have to search another source, these marketsegment is just not transparent. For example i just found one for 680€ (about 728US$ for 800W & inverter.
People who have solar are usually rich and have money managers. They never factor in the land price and taxes in their models. I had to put 30k down on my first property. 90% of people can't afford that

Yes I often charge my car at home through summer and get paid for it here in Sydney. Not unusual. OVO energy now offer free electricity from 10am to 2pm in their time of use plans and Amber Electric often reach zero and negative prices through summer. But it’s the spikes in electricity prices that allow you to make money if you have a good battery. Up until now a house battery did not have a good ROI but with access to electricity wholesale market spot trading via companies like Amber here in Australia and Octopus in the UK and software like EMHASS with Home Assistant that has changed.
I'm not putting a slave battery in my house. Solar and wind are cool but the batteries use blood minerals. Get us a better battery and I'll go back. Meanwhile I'll enjoy my air compressor engine that uses 0 fuel and had 0 emissions

While I look forward to EV prices and solar becoming cheaper, they need to. We are in the process of swapping our diesel for an EV. There are just a few cars in the sensible affordable price range. For wider adoption of BEVs and more solar power generation at more affordable prices we need Tony Seeba to be right. Cars are a key part of reducing the problems we have with air quality. Once buying an ICE car is looked on as illogical choice for most people I will be relieved. At the moment it seems like the misinformation is able to use the up front cost as a prop for avoiding the sensible choice. Once the cars are cheaper the misinformation will still be there but will slowly become less effective.
Balcony balustrades sound like an interesting way to add to the possibilities. Then it will make sense for buildings to buy a building battery (repurposed BEV batteries?). Trade in your car battery and they could refurbish it before installing it on the roof of apartment buildings.
Now, imagine when Tesla has Optimus robots to install the solar panels…day and night except when recharging for maybe an hour or two a day

It's absolutely possible to get negative pricing since amortisation time (including recycling costs) gets shorter and shorter. How do people think companies make money? By continuing to use machines after they passed amortisation.
To me it seems as if some people don't get it how they earn money - which literally is having negative costs...you get money. Positive costs = you lose money.
The only reason electricity is expensive is because the government won't let us build more power plants. The EPA in the US has basically banned any new power plants especially nuclear.

Given that much of the cost of home solar is installation, making photovoltaics a part of everything exterior that you happen to install...fencing, siding, roofing, sheds...could make a fair bit of sense. Photovoltaics themselves aren't the cost anymore; it's the other bits and the install.
Maybe. Just like evs and cars, the more you produce the more problems you will encounter. Some solar panel companies are being banned because they used toxic materials to supply cheap solar panels. In China they have fields of EVs because their batteries are garbage and catch fire all the time. China had to ban electric scooters in some residential areas

In the case of the UK that’s perhaps because they’re busy building what was described as “the most expensive building on the planet” by way of the new nuclear station at Hinckley, to be followed by another at Sizewell. Your grandchildren will die of old age paying for those money furnaces.
In the uk they are using green belt land to put up solar farms when there is plenty of roof top space.
As for cheap power if you have look at octopus energy you may find something you like
The new offshore drilling should be productive in a couple years. Texas has the most wind and second in solar only behind the state that forces people to get solar is drilling so much oil that natural gas prices went negative, while offshore drilling is more expensive, it should still hopefully bring prosperity to the UK allowing for a cheaper transition to green energy.
The fact that the timelines are out is proof that it's speculation. You cannot claim he is correct if he gets the timeline wrong as timing is critical in forecasts.
