  • Republicans and their base used to be more supportive of abortion rights than Democrats. Now, they’re pushing for abortion restrictions in states like Texas, Alabama and Missouri, with an aim to overturn Roe v. Wade. Why did the GOP turn its back on abortion rights ... and what does Ronald Reagan, Obama and gerrymandering have to do with it all? #Abortion #Texas #RoeVWade

No, because after Roe v. Wade, abortion surged as an issue, and the country became more divided over it. So the parties had to take clear sides around it. And since Dems were already the party of "women's rights", it became the one that was pro-choice and the GOP the pro-life one.

"The unborn" are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike orphans, they don't need money, education, or childcare; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. It's almost as if, by being born, they have died to you. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners, immigrants, the sick, the poor, widows, orphans. All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible, they all get thrown under the bus for the unborn

The unborn are a convenient group to throw under the bus, because they can never speak back against you.

Well more than thirty-five years ago, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the particular provision in the Canadian Criminal Code - under which abortion had been governed - was unconstitutional, as it violated a woman's fundamental right to 'security of person' per Section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Thus, Section 251(4) of the Canadian Criminal Code was not justifiable per Section 1 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. For the record, the landmark reproductive rights court opinion as rendered by the Supreme Court of Canada is cited as 'R. v. Morgentaler [1988] 1 SCR 30, 82 NR 1, 44 DLR (4th) 385, 26 OAC 1, 63 OR (2nd) 281, 37 CCC (3rd) 449, 62 CR (3rd) 1, 37 CCC (3rd) 449, 31 CRR 1, 3 WCB (2nd) 332, JE 88-220, [1988] SCJ No. 1 (QL), [1988] ACS No. 1.' Fortunately, the re-criminalization of abortion in Canada through legislative and/or judicial means will never see the light of day. Evidently, abortion has long remained a 'proverbial' third-rail of Canadian politics.

Anti abortionists are in for a rude awakening. The legal theories that made Roe vs. Wade possible related to privacy rights. There are NO privacy rights directly enshrined in the Constitution. It is widely acknowledged as something the writers of the Constitutions overlooked, because the whole idea of "privacy" was not really a tangible concept 200+ years ago. So the Courts have come up with various legal machination and logic to create a right to privacy. THAT is what underpinned Roe vs. Wade. Unfortunately, THAT is what they have now taken down. This means that many other rights supported by judicially enshrined privacy rights may also now be struck down. These include things like birth control, LOL. Brilliant.

Almost 100% of abortions happen before 20 weeks. There are fewer than 100 late-term abortions each year, and almost all of them are done because the baby would not live after birth. Why are you so focused on this incredibly rare circumstance?

@@OsirisMalkovich that's a ridiculously unrealistic figure. At least 8 states allow late term abortion and with millions of people in each state there's no way there's only fewer than 100 late term abortions each year. Link your source.
