Different sauces and veggies depending on the stalls. Usually Ramly burger stall owned by locals but currently many illegals immigrants from Bangladesh and Indonesia also set up their own stalls. Malay is an ethnicity, like Chinese or Indian. Regardless of ethnicity, we are all Malaysian (which is a nationality). So some of the food you tried is Chinese Malaysian. Roti Canai can be thought of as Indian Malaysian food. Malaysian food in general is very much a fusion of traditional Malay, Chinese, and Indian with touches of Dutch, Portuguese, Englich, Arabic, and several others with mostly local ingredients.

My Dad spent time in, as it was then, Malaya, as well as Singapore and Brunei, back in the mid 1960's. It had such an impact on him, that growing up we would often have an adapted version of Nasi Goreng at home and it was my favourite. He remembers his time in Malaysia fondly.
Thats awesome! That was one thing my family couldn’t make growing up, proper fried rice. We’d have stirfry and things like that, but using fish sauce and oyster sauce just wasn’t on the menu, only soy sauce. It would have changed the game. Being out here and learning about the ingredients has stepped up the game as far as making food from this region. 🙏
@@mikeandashley To add to the Nasi Goreng story - My Mum is British, but was raised in Belgium, which is where she met Dad about 3 or 4 years after he had been in SE Asia. A few months ago I was asking my folks about the backstory of how Nasi Goreng came to be part of our home routine. Mum said that whilst we were in Hong Kong (a decade or so after Dad had been in Malaysia etc) she had been to a cooking demonstration with the Gurkhas, and one of the dishes was a version of Nasi Goreng, and so the family tradition of having Nasi Goreng in a British home was created.
You may ask the Ramly Burger street food vendor for "less sauce", in doing so it will be less messy. Personally, I prefer it that way. However, quite a lot of people like more sauce and subscribed to "the messier it is, the better it tastes". If you are really into food, plan visitation by region. Those guys did recommend to you Ayam masak merah (literally Red cooked chicken *shrug* just a name) it is not rendang. That said everyone has their own take on rendang some are better than others as you discovered. The potato croquette is called Begedil. In general malay food is similar to Indonesian with some exception like a sweeter sambal for Malaysia whereas Indonesia focus on the heat. Kaya is a custard made with eggs coconut milk palm sugar or regular sugar flavored with pandan leaves. I prefer the ones made with dark palm sugar (gula melaka) . Ramli burger is just the patty every street vendor have their own way of making them in general Malaysians like it saucy and sloppy you can tell them to use less sauce. I hope you do get to find mee rebus (based on beef broth - very safe bet for yall.) another very traditional Malay style noodles. The peranakan noodles is also traditional they were the early Chinese migrants 15th century. Later Chinese migrants 18th century have a different style of cooking. I do have to warn you all Laksa noodles they all are seafood broth made from shrimp or mackerel or both. Every state has their own version of laksa so delicious. C'mon you gotta get accustomed to taste and flavors especially fish. lol.
Wow, this is so thorough! Thank you for putting so much thought into your comment. 😊 Sorry it took us a minute to respond, we’ve been quite busy! We actually try a version of curry laksa in our next video! It was delicious 😋 The food in Malaysia is so wildly influenced. I asked for Ayam masak merah, but when she recommended the rendang, I felt embarrassed and didn’t want to refuse her! We should have just gotten both! 😅 We will definitely try it next time, because we hear it’s spicy and we LOVE spicy! Thank you again so much for putting so much effort into this explanation. We love learning from the comments. Thanks for watching! 🙏🫶

Rendang was my fav food too but I had the beef 👌. Did you ever try the ayam masak merah? I was curious to see if you liked it bc i never broke out of my beef rendang habit.😂
KL is such a cool city. We lived there for almost two months and miss it so much. We never ended up trying ayam masak merah, unfortunately. Guess we'll have to go back! 😅
@@mikeandashley no bro! rendang is from indonesia.

Wellcome/selamat datang to Malaysia, we have more then Kuala Lumpur, happy exploring. The borneo part of Malaysia have much nature to explore....
Thank you so much! We didn’t make it to Borneo this time, but it’s a dream for us! We do however see more than just KL. 😊🙏
welcome to mlysia guys...have a nice stay..hopefully..
Thank you so much! We did, it was lovely!
Nasi Lemak Wanjo...yeah...our King of Malaysia had breakfast over there too 😉
What?! No way! We are the food of the king? 😋
@@mikeandashley yup...at Wanjo that you guys had Nasi Lemak...His Majesty also had breakfast over there too 😃...i think theres a few clips on UA-cam where His Majesty casually drop by and have Nasi Lemak 😅
That's awesome. Also, I love how we ate nasi lemak for dinner, and then found out that it's really popular for breakfast haha.
We feel privileged to have sat in the same building as His Majesty. 🙏
@@mikeandashley no worries...Nasi Lemak is all rounder food...you can have it for breakfast or lunch or tea time or dinner and most probably supper as well 😆👍🏻
I’d honestly eat it any time, so that makes sense. I love how versatile to food is in Malaysia!
Have fun where ever.
Thanks so much!
You should go jalan tuanku abdul rahman night market..more street food and the good vibe and multiply people which is the malaysian colours ...if you start from sogo mall you walk thru the alley and enjoy the food and vibe...then go strait until you can see merdeka square and stop there in the river of life take photo...
Thanks for the tip! We’re unfortunately no longer in KL, but I’m sure we’ll be back at some point. 😁
Love the thumbnail my friends :)
Thanks Vu! Sometimes we make a decent one. 😅😂
Cheers again for a good run of a great video! Thanks a lot for promoting KL, Malaysia!
Thank you! We’re happy you enjoyed it! We had a lot of fun in KL.

This was not intentional and we apologize for the inconvenience. 🙏 Thank you for your comment and support. 🫶
I once commented on another vlogger's video about where to go in Malaysia (because they directly asked me in the replies). It kept getting deleted idk why. All I did was list down places I recommend in KL. Strange indeed. The vlogger didn't know what happened either lol. Perhaps this comment will get flagged as well haha. Anyway, welcome to Malaysia!
U guys are so lovely. Rendang is not a chinese specialty, thats why u love rendang at wanjo more as it is a Malay dish. For chinese food, bak kut teh is a must..not forgetting nasi beriani, nasi kerabu, asam laksa.
Ah, that makes sense. Thank you for the recommendations! The food in Malaysia is so delicious. 🤗😋
now this is how you travel vlog! can't help to smile whenever you guys tasted good food like.. yeaaaah it's "sedap" rightt??

Roti canai banjir is a Malaysian thing. You can get nasi kandar kuah banjir or basically anything banjir. Banjir is flood. So it meant your food flooded with gravy.
Oh! Ok, that makes sense. The other times we’d had it, it was just the roti with the gravy on the side, so we were surprised to see it like this! So delicious!
Ashley's first reaction to soursop was amazing
Agreed. It’s one of my favorite things when she experiences something that really blows her mind. 👌
If Ashley like chocolate she should try ice Milo (ice chocolate drink) or ice neslo (ice coffee chocolate mix drink)😅 if u haven't already
Also sour plum drink is nice
To me, The best Roti Canai is made by the Malays stall. Soft and delicious
We’ve had it at so many places. Our favorite was a place by our apartment in Ampang Jaya. It was just too far out of the way on our filming day!
@prof_xhew2929 we had Milo ice later in this video!
Roti canai has rank no 1 for best roti in the world in 2023 now 4th place.. and curry puff is rank no 4 best pastry in yhe world.. and malaysia has the second tallest tower in the world
We can see why! Roti Canai is DELICIOUS! Curry puffs are also quite good. 😋

coconut rice is nasi lemak one of
malaysia traditional dish
Ok! That is cool. We were intrigued at first, but now it just feels like the way! 👌😮💨
29:15 it's kaya spread. I think jam is for fruit-based spread.
I appreciate Ashley's genuine acceptance and liking for these under the radar, least mentioned flavours of Malaysia (or SE Asia) like pandan and kaya. If you have not tried this, please to the bread section of any grocery or convenience store and get pandan cake slices, pandan swiss rolls and pandan chiffon cakes. Better yet, try looking for these at bakeries. Pandan cakes are truly divine.
Mmm. Kaya is the stuff of dreams. Yeah, Ashley has blossomed into quite the adventurous eater. When we first met, she would only eat package noodles, mac and cheese and hamburgers. It's pretty wild to see her go now. 😂
Wow! Now I'm more excited for our trip on October!
That’s awesome! Glad we could help! Feel free to let us know if you have any questions and we’ll do our best to answer them! 😊
@@mikeandashley are the MRTs connected to all tourist spots or you have grab a taxi for some?
They aren't necessarily connected to ALL the tourist spots, but it's pretty easy to navigate around to the ones you need. There is also apparently a free bus that runs routes in KLCC, though we never used it.

3:02 Bukit Nanas. Didn't you guys see the tourism office on the right, as you walk a few more meters in front. If you went in you would have found out that Bukit Nanas is a forest reserve. That is a forest reserve in the center of the city. Oh, there is also a hiking trail through it.
some western tourists said Ramly Burger prepared at Abg Boo'bo stall near Petaling Street taste better. U may try it.
Thank you for the recommendation! We'll try that the next time we're in Kuala Lumpur. 😊
welcome to kl, malaysia. u were so so close to the best ramly burger - the stall is called burger boss - at the end of jalan alor.
Ah, we’ve heard! 🫣😫 We liked the idea, but they could have maybe done better. I feel like when we looked online, Burger Boss wasn’t open? Maybe we missed something. Next time though! 👌
Its a rich of taste in malaysia since malacca sultanate were among the top herbal spice hub in asia 600 years ago..
This makes perfect sense. That's why there are so many diverse dishes packed with flavor! My mouth is watering just thinking about it. 🤤
oppss.. i have to stop u there.. at 11:40 u said "Chinese descent Malays" which is not correct. It should be Chinese descent Malaysians. Malay is a different ethnic group in Malaysia which are different from the Chinese. The term Malaysians should be used for the country nationality of all Malaysians regardless of ethnic groups. Malay, Chinese, Indians, or any other ethnic groups are basically referring the culture to which they belong to or relate most from.
Oh no! My mistake. 😅 Sorry for that, and thank you so much for correcting me and breaking it all down. We really appreciate it. We hope you enjoyed the video. 😊🙏

Olden days roti canai got curry minced beef fillings. My grandma doing business in the colonial shops and Indian food just opposite and we ate from young till today.
That sounds delicious! 😋
welcome to malaysia.my friends😄

You could have had the ramly burger in kg baru where u were…across the street from the saloma bridge elevator. It wasn’t our fav bc we don’t like that much sauce on our burgers. Malays really love their sauces!! 😅. But i liked the egg on it + definitely would order with 1/2 the sauce next time 😂
Ah, good to know. We're eager to try another Ramly burger and will ask for half sauce next time. The egg was so good! 😊
It was delicious 😋
The food in Malaysia is so wildly influenced.
I asked for Ayam masak merah, but when she recommended the rendang, I felt embarrassed and didn’t want to refuse her! We should have just gotten both! 😅
We will definitely try it next time, because we hear it’s spicy and we LOVE spicy!
Thank you again so much for putting so much effort into this explanation. We love learning from the comments. Thanks for watching! 🙏🫶
@@mikeandashley Ayam masak merah is almost like goulash which is based on red bell pepper however Malaysian use dried red chili pepper it has a bit more heat than say a paprika goulash. Regardless what people say don't just mix them all up in a plate because some things are really very spicy even for the locals. I mean some locals are used to the heat but lil ole me gets heartburn from too much heat. Mee Kari is a variety of curry Laksa that should use chicken broth.
Ok! That sounds amazing and I'm gutted we didn't try it. There are so many foods that we wish we could just pop back over and try. I guess that's the downside of having videos come out after you leave a place! 😩 We always get so many recommendations we would have never found on our own... but the good side is it just gives us even more reason to return! 🤗
I'm now on a mission to actually try ayam masak merah! And kari mee sounds right up our alley! Thanks.
Hi, i think u can find the other ramly burger, because its looked so dry when he grill the patty. more buttery more delicious actually.. just my oppinion. btw enjoy ur trip here in Malaysia guys.
Yea, we may have to get another one at some point. 😅 But it did the job! 👌
the potato cake at nasi lemak is called BE GE DIL
pronounce it as burger dil
Ah! That’s right. We’d had them in Indonesia, and they were called perkedel! It makes sense that it sounds similar. 😊 Thanks! 🙏✨
one think i realised, when you said " terima kasih" in Petaling Street to Chinese community, they wont reply "sama-sama". they just smiled. But when you at Kampung Bharu, the local will reply "sama-sama". A thing to ponder - does Malaysian Chinese not interested to use Malay language to foreigners?
Interesting. We took no offense. 😊
