@@Bugnarld i tried trading between a rom of pokemon platinum on a hacked 3ds with twilight menu ++, and a real pokemon soulsilver on a regular ds, worked fine.
I'm late to the party, but thought I'd throw this out there. There are different english patches of green, but there's also a patch of blue that turns it into a functional copy of green. It changes the header data, encounter table, sprites, and allows it to trade and work with pokemon stadium as green version. So you probably got that version on your cartridge.
You are definitely not an idiot man! And I have the same nostalgia goal. I have a brother and a sister and we used to play Pokemon yellow altogether having one console which we shared. My brother is moving to another country and I want to buy 3 game boys so we all have Pokemon Yellow, Blue and Red and one day we meet together and trade so we have all 151 Pokemon. long story short, the games are pricy, even cost a little more than the console itself so I wondered if a copy would work and you are a savior sir! P.S. We are also in our twenties.
That is a very beautiful goal! I love it. And trading is much more fun through a link cable then it is on the newer games through WiFi. It is funny because in the 90's our parents told us it was just a phase, and here we are decades later still going strong! I hope you all complete your pokedexs and you should definitely video the experience, which I know I would definitely watch.
Cart logo? You mean the word "Game" at the top? Or do you mean the fact that it's not the original Japanese label? Because you could probably buy your own repro label to put on. And as far the cart, ones with the proper "Game Boy" logo exist, you just have to shop around.
@@chrislynch6407 For $80, I hope to god they came with extras. $80 for reproductions is entirely too much to be spending unless they come with cases and everything. And for $80, I hope you managed to get every single Gen 1, 2, and 3 game. And not just a few.
I actually have a newer version of the English translation cartridge that has the "correct" Nintendo Gameboy logo on the cartridge. Interesting that there are actually a couple different versions of these cartridges, depending on who makes/sells them.
The green version is very buggy and the main use of it is taking its rom off and using it on a custom cartridge. It is translated perfectly, shares the og japan sprites, and can even trade which is why the rom is so useful
I know the idea was to be nostalgic here but I think it would have been cool to sneak the surfing pikachu minigame from yellow into here as well as to override the unused glitch moves that normally crash the game with ones from Gen 2. So if you trade them to Blue Red Or Yellow they just turn into the glitch moves and vice versa. Oh and there's an unused town point to the south west of the Elite Four that is only accessable through the gameshark or cheat devices, they should have put that south of Celadon, and even put in the beta map of the deleted town as an Easter Egg. And added the option in to battle professor oak just once after beating the elite four!
As long the game works then I'm ok with it. I still got my Gameboy color system and games but it's very hard to get pokemon red, blue, green, yellow, silver, gold and crystal
If I trade from my fake green game and a real blue it looks like the trade went thru until you turn off the games. Once you turn them back on the pokemon from green go back to the pokemon I had before. It's like a pokemon spawning machine

okay. so the thing is if you trade a Pokémon between the japanese game and the english one it gets corrupted. gen 1 of Pokémon uses things like names for hexadecimal reference and they cant use the characters for the opposite language. However, im almost certain that the bootleg green that's on ebay is actually a rom hack of blue, with the sprites reskinned and intro swapped. but I could be wrong.

It makes for a neat video, but to be honest, these kinds of questions are ever so slightly dumb. Of course trading works. The Green is just a rom hack of Red and Blue. The console still thinks its Red or Blue. None of the trading mechanics have been altered. At this point, you're just trading from Red/Blue to Red/Blue. It's just like those videos of "Can you trade from a reproduction Emerald to a REAL Emerald?" Like, yeah, you can. Because there's nothing different in the coding or how the game is loaded into ram to make the Game Boy think it's not real. Of course it works. The only reason it wouldn't work is if someone went in and modified the code for trading on the Repro, and who would be stupid enough to do that? Don't get me wrong, people have the questions. It makes sense to make a video about it. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the video. I just think the question is dumb in the first place. If you know even the slightest about roms, or how games work, you'll have your answer the instant you think about it.
If this is always the case, what's up with gen 3 to gen 4? Just curious. Also after playing emulators for years I just don't know enough coding info to put 2 and 2 together sometimes. So a question like being able to trade red to green wasn't stupid to me! But I see your point haha
