Great after-action analysis! Would like more of this content! I'm a longtime fan and student! One day I'll get there.
Thanks for the feedback.
I’ll certainly make more videos of this style
I'm in office and you beam me for sailing in my mind. Thank you for the content. Have a great time Joe 👍👍👍
Rock on!
Some really nice somth sailing in gusty conditions good work!
Many thanks!
the classic beast
Oh yeah. The best.
Big spinnaker boats for the win!
Going to try to give up Hobie 16s until the end of august!
On the T I found there is very little tendency to stick leeward bow while under spinnaker, esp. in flat water like this, don't focus on it too much, steering down to keep it up so much...hold for speed build, feather to lee if hull gets too high (but you do want it out the water all the time downwind). If boat is sensitive to gusts, popping up suddenly etc, then inch on a bit more downhaul. If not much lift off in gusts, then you are too flat on main, less downhaul to bring the draft back to top of sail. Keep the spinny luft well easied via halyard stop point or spinny pole height (set on shore of course). I'd keep mine so I can grab a fist full of luff, then rotate my fist at least 90 degrees to horizontal, or even a fair bit more. Sail cut differences will change this, but too tight a luff makes for a twitchy kite, hard to keep in the best groove. Steering under kite should only need fingertip movements...aiming for 5 degree increments to let speed come up and held as you turn back down. Keep kite as loose as she'll go without collapsing (though that is more for max downwind VMG, not so much top speed as was point here).
Thanks very much for these tips - The downhaul especially - I've never really thought about it on the downhill - apart from ease before hoisting to get more shape into the sail.
This really is solid gold!
Thanks
I spoke to Thanos at OS3 he advised me on the luff tension - he also said we were way too tight.
Nice ride Joe, my 5 pennies is to go easier on steering and follow the wind more for higher VMG. When I have F18 co-skippers on my larger Dragonfly 800 Racing+ (1100 kg and 76 m2 upwind) I always notice they tend to trim and steer more than I do - go (smooth) with the flow :-) Cheers!
Thanks very much for the advice. I'll certainly try to clam the steering down - I think maybe because I came from smaller boats I still feel the need to respond too quickly.
@@JoyriderTV Don't know what's fastest and different per boat type. Hard to measure wo other boat/s to compare with 🙂
Hi Joe, looking really good already! Maybe try easing the main in the gusts and then pulling it in again? Also a bit more mastrotation inwards could be usefull, your most wont break if you pull it in slightly, but your sail will twist a bit more and be far more efficient. I wish I could be sailing where you are!
Dont forget easing the jib downwind aswel :)
Thanks for the tips.
I'll put those into practice in the next outing.
Hi Joe, I know conditions vary day to day and cat to cat but having watched many of your videos I get the impression that you can achieve similar speeds in a Hobie 16 and something ‘more sophisticated’ like a Tornado. I love the aesthetics of the Tornado ... but if you were the last man on Earth, and were granted your final wish, which one would you choose and why? Love your videos! 💙
If I was the last - that would probably mean more solo sailing.
Hmmm......
Looks like a very tight foot on the jib upwind. Does the Tornado allow you to change the tack location of the jib?
Downwind we have found good success with installing an adjustable jib clew line. Really helped with the trim of the jib while the kite is up.
We did the same. Allows to control the amount of Jib out..
We can move the tack upwards which will loosen the foot - i'll try that for sure.,
No adjustable clew line though.
I'd be keen to see a picture if you have one.
@JoyriderTV your C2 should have one.
If I can't explain I'll email you some photos next weekend.
Basically. Cleat on the port beam about 6-10 inches from mast base. Then the line goes under the jib track forward to a riveted circle on the cenrerline top of spin pole (maybe 8 inches in front of the track). Then the line goes back to the jib car which actually has a hole built in to tie the line to.
Our previous boat had multiple holes drilled into the jib track and used quick pins depending on the day/conditions. The pins just stopped the jib track at a certain point. We like the adjustable line much more.
@@DialedN_07 ah, ok, it's what i'd call a jib car control. I've got that and we have settings from the World Champs to use.
Cheers!
Do you have a GoPro with horizon leveling built in? This would be a good camera position for that feature.
I thought I had it turned on but unfortunately……no
Joe, I wonder if with such high winds your mast is over-rotated on the downwind leg. I don't think it will gain MUCH speed, but can also put the mast in better column with the forces. At 20kts boat speed you're also moving apparent wind forward a bit. We try to only have the mast at 90 degrees downwind in light to moderate conditions.
Mast was at about 45 - do you think point it at the back beam corner on the downhill?
@JoyriderTV I may have been seeing it wrong then. I thought I was seeing the shroud and spin halyard block pointing straight back.
No, I'm only talking about a few degrees off 90. We figured it out by accident as a previous boat for some reason wouldn't rotate to 90 on one side (about 75) and it went a bit faster always on that side. So we played with it on the C2 and had some success.
@@DialedN_07 maybe i'll try a touch more and see how she likes it.
Hi Joe, wonderfull video again, wat I see is a very loose backleech of the jib , In my opinion you will loose higth and presure
Yes, looking at it I can see what you're talking about - i'll change the sheeting angle
Im thinking I need some Wildwind Vassiliki time 😊
Me too!
I want to go to the sailing school in Lefkas you showed on these videos… what is it called… or a link please?
wildwind.co.uk I'll see you here!
Joe. We need a show down between the tornado and the hobbie 16. A race in light medium and strong winds. How do they compare.
Oh yes! I'm planning something big.
Hopefully i'll have it cooked this coming week.
@@JoyriderTV fair play. That race between the H16 and 5.9 was brilliant. Does that mean the 5.9 is faster?
Would be great to see the course in Telemetry overlay to understand the shifts.
Yes, that was pretty good but Because we weren’t sailing around boys, the course looked really confusing
Joe how did you get your channel so good because I am wondering how it done.
Do you mean great content or good amounts of views?
@@JoyriderTV YES
Not that I execute perfectly myself... but when tacking in conditions you can fly a hull, as skipper stay on the old windward side until the new windward is flying. You will have betting tiller control longer and even without your weight over there it will accelerate quicker.
With the kite up try keeping the tiller extension in your hand and gripping it so your knuckles are pressed against rear crossbar, steering with just the range offered by your thumb and forefinger. When overpowered with kite or trying to reach higher I will sometimes work the main traveler hard.
I can't wait to watch you double trapped with the kite up! Ya ain't going find top speed on the tramp with the kite. 😈
Thanks for the tips - much appreciated.
Balls of steel or at least a good poker face required for the late crossing - I'll give it a go but perhaps not in wind over 20.
I'll have to put my big boy pants on for double trapezius with the kite!!!
@JoyriderTV both really aren't that big of a deal. You still have full control of boat from leeward side, and are still close to wind, so unless the gusts are bonkers it's no big deal. Until you get a solid feel You can keep your eyes locked in on the new windward rudder. It will let you know if you steering is smooth and you see instantly if the boat is coming up.
Try double trapping with the Kite in 10-12.. you should be able to hit 20+ drop main traveler small increments to depower.. and don't forget to ease cunningham
Hm, we just reached 20,5 knots on our Tornado with Gennacker and thought that is a good speed, but you have been faster ..
The flat water in Vasiliki might be of good suppport for the speed.
Yeah, the strong wind with flat water allow us to push harder
Something on the spinnaker isn't setting correctly. On one run the lazy sheet is caught under the foot - that doesn't help. Always have to flip the lazy sheet out and away from the spinnaker as you come across.
Well spotted.
More observant team required!
13,5 knots is probably too much for upwind sailing. 12,5 will do best vmg. I also think downwind you sheeted in too much. You need some twist. But the speed was good.
Thanks for the tips.
If i can get an extra 0.5 on the downwind that would be cooking!!
Ive always wanted to try The tornado but i dont Think i weigh enough.🥲
There are now teams racing these bad boys with combined crew weight of 105kgs.
