To me, the album sounds like a mix of Gold&Grey's writing, with hints of Yellow&Green but evolving in terms of its production sound and vocal experimentation. It's not their catchiest album, or their heaviest, but they're doing a great job of not getting stale by changing things up. Blue, Purple and Yellow are my Top 3 from Baroness, but this new album probably sits pretty comfortably in 4th. Under the Wheel being my favourite track.
Great review, I had the same reaction to the drumming. That dude is a workhorse, and very underrated. Baroness has this unique sound that is both dark and uplifting, simultaneously. I can't think of any other band that can pull that off. They are a unique band and I will always check out their work. I am very excited for this release!
@@bobbyellis5006honestly I’m not gonna lie, the production really grew on me. Yes it can be thin and overcompressed but It added this whole extra layer of storytelling for me personally, a scorched world left to ash. It comes across as this really heavy personal experience. Just trying to find the will or way for the light to breakthrough!
Gold and grey wasn't a great album for me, but in tourniquet, for example, had some of their best songs. Purple took me some time to appreciate mainly because it lost a lot of heaviness compared to previous work. I actually love purple now. Both those records suffered production wise, so I'm really looking forward to Stone. I still think Red is my favourite Baroness album, but I never expected them to go back fully go back to that.
I've been into Baroness since the Blue Record. After hearing both the Blue & Red records, I was surprised to hear the difference on Yellow & Green. It took me a while to get into, but eventually, it became another favorite. Hearing the first 3 singles from Stone, I'd have to say that what I've heard so far is excellent. Of the 3, Shine is definitely giving me Tourniquet vibes. Not so much in song structure, but the vibe on first few listens. Cant wait for Friday. Will also be seeing them for the first time here in Montreal...
Really great review. I loved the album, for me, It's up there with the blue record, I can't stop playing it every day, not only Stone is their best sounding record yet, every song is a banger and the progression between sounds is really impressive.
Very happy that the production on the new album is better. Need some more replay to fully appreciate it but there’s some good stuff on the album. Wish we could get a version of Gold and Grey with this production quality.
The production of Gold and Grey absolutely killed that album for me. I love the songs but it just sounds too muddy, to my ear. I've honestly been hesitant to check out Stone for that reason.
Production wise the album is a step up for sure. While there are some great songs on this album I just feel like it rarely excels past the singles. The interludes and transition songs are great but ultimately the album just feels really short. However like "Gold & Grey", this album will most likely grow on me. I recently saw them live in Toronto at the Danforth Music Hall and the new tunes sound epic live.
To get into the last ten years of Baroness' progressive progression, check out Seb's playing in Trans Am. He's bringing some of that into each Baroness release while stretching his chops more. John also sings a bit differently, not holding out the notes so much that, no joke, reminds me of The Roches meets Thin Lizzy
Finally picked it up today and it is brilliant. My favourite since Blue, already! John experimented with his vocals (finally). If they change the key some time. ❤
I hope you guys are going to review the new Ningen Isu album 'Shikisoku zeku', released on the 6th September. These guys are crying out for worldwide recognition, and have done for thirty years and more.
@@duartelucas5746 I'm 'English' and have no problem completely enjoying their output. Your small minded outlook doesn't work with Rammstein. Funny that, almost as if the language of the lyrics doesn't matter.
@@mrpositronia What small mindset? If you want world visibility, you speak a universal language. It says nothing about a band quality, but its potential reach. Sure, you have Rammstein, and so what? I listen mostly to English and my mother tongue, so as probably most people that have access to music from around the world. I got your comment, you love the band, I was just making a rational point while playing with what you said. Don’t take yourself so seriously.
Every Baroness album has some absolute world class bangers and this one is no different. Anodyne stands out and Under the Wheel is so fucking heavy. It's crushing.
There's influences from every album. Even in the minute details of like opening harmonics-- to notes played differently to a similar cadence. Even solos are very reminiscent. I think it's one of their best albums. Gold and Grey would be one of their best albums too if the mix weren't so...stylized and fuzzy. I've been a fan since Blue's release, so to hear any kind of call-back to that has my full attention.
Yesss! The Witch Ripper album is phenomenal! If you like Dvne, it's for you. The Anchoret sounds too much like East of the Wall, which is a band that doesn't get enough love - they just dropped a new album too, so check that out. I wouldn't put Grant The Sun or Soen in the same league as Baroness' Stone.
From the pre-release singles, it sounds like they walked back the absolutely terrible production decisions on Gold and Grey, and I'm here for it. I am a huge Baroness fan - Yellow & Green is my favorite album of all time - but I could only get through G&G once. It sucks, too, because hearing those songs live really brought them to life for me, but I can't enjoy them with that godawful production. So glad it seems they're over that. Cannot wait for Friday.
I've listened to the album quite few times now from start to finish. That change in production is a lot to take! I have to say, so far I kind of miss it - feels like the sound engineering of previous albums while noisier and muddier actually lent the music a more ethereal quality. I usually prefer crispness in sound, but it's going to take me a while longer to get used to it this time.
Based on the singles I'm excited for this one. Gold and Grey was such a disappointment for me. The sound mixing was bad to the point that it totally ruined the record. Glad I can actually hear what's happening on this one.
I don’t see any sense on that statement regarding Soen. They are becoming a bit repetitive and boring. The vocalist has no imagination. And I don’t know, but guess that Martin Lopez writes most of it and it tells. The same riffs, the same rhythms, the same (again) vocal melodies. Baroness is none of that, despite any one’s preference.
I stopped listening to Baroness after Yellow and Green came out. I just wasn't a fan of the muddy, flat production style they were using and John Baizley's vocals can be a bit iffy. But I've been revisiting them lately and am looking forward to picking this album up. Red Album will always be their finest record for me.
Totally disagree. The album is phenomenal. They are going towards a more holistic and complete approach, this being a beautiful artistic statement. But hey, to each their own. Time will tell what stands to the test of time.
honestly how is baroness one of the most influencial bands from the US? who did they influence? theyre fairly popular but not at all on a real star level. might be nitpicking here but opening the video with a line like that is odd.
Thanks for your rave review of STONE and highlighting “Last Word,” “Magnolia,” “Shine,” “Beneath the Rose,” & “Under The Wheel” 🔥
I think the production is just perfect. You hear everything, not too shimmy, not too heavy, really balanced.

I love Dylan's prog reviews and downloaded all of his recommendations! He is kinder and gentler when it comes to reviews.
Gold and Grey is one of my all-time favorite records, so my anticipation of this has been high. Can't wait!!
How do you get over the horrendous mixing on that one?
I always thought it was refreshingly noisy and crunchy, but I'm also a fuzz lover to the extreme haha

Purple was brickwalled, too, it wasn't exclusive to gold and grey

I will try Yellow and Green again. I wanted to love it.
Can't wait to listen to the whole album! Also, awesome that you mentioned Witch Ripper, one of my favorite records this year 👌

Same here. They're easily my favorite band from the last 20 years.

A teaser for Friday for another album you’ve been looking forward to for a very long time? Could it be Alkaloid?
Yes 🤘

If they really were “crying for world recognition”, they would be trying. Like putting something in English.

Excited for this album!
I'm stoked got sylosis on the way and ready to order this album
Great review! Nice work. You are clearly well informed.
Dylan better be coming out with a new Tesseract album review or I’ll riot!
I love the album, very solid. But saying anything tops red is blasphemous.
Everything baroness does to me is magic.
Im just glad its not over produced and mixed like some pop album. I hate that trend metal bands are doing these days.
So far, this album is sounding better than Purple and Gold & Grey. I wasn't a huge fan of either, so hopefully, this one will break the cycle.
wow that's too bad. they're both my favorite of their records. but I've liked everything they put out .
It’s their best album! Marvelous!
Nobody on this channel going to review the new fetus album??
Not enough reviews anymore
Banger, hire me as your prog - power guy
So Friday doing Tomb Mold? Or Flesher? Or Cannibal?
Probably Tesseract. He's the prog guy after all

It would be so good if the constant off key singing didn't ruin it.
Glad they’re back to heavier. Lost me there for a while (4 years!)

I did not like it

I think this might be their worst album, also whoever told Baizley he could sing needs to be prisoned
He's always been the singer. That whispering though....blech.

I don't like the vocals, maybe if the girl was the sole singer, it would be better.
Gold & Grey was such a disappointing mess in no small part thanks to the production, so good that this already sounds better.
First
band fell off so hard
The only things I really enjoy by Baroness are the two EPs.
