I had the pleasure of being there three years ago. I had to climb the mountain trail at 4:30 a.m. in complete darkness, just a flashlight to guide me, so I could be up there for sunrise. And it was cold-- only about 8 degrees celsius, when I started. Along the way little Lanna Thai village children would pop out from behind the rocks, illuminated by flashlights, dressed in native costumes, and dancing, blasting native Thai music on boom boxes-- shilling for money. That part was a bit annoying, but in hindsight, it made it memorable. Sunrise at the top, with the clouds down in the valley below was absolutely stunning, just like in Paddy's video here. There were about 200 people at the top, mostly Thai people, just s smattering of farang, so that made it great-- there were no busloads of annoying bus tourists. Everyone at the top was friendly and talking with each other, at least to the extent we could in each other's languages, and I had offers from people to take photos of me next to the Laos border sign. It just felt like a fun community up there, not overwhelmingly tourist-y at all. I took a cab from Chiang Rai to get to the base-- I prearranged cabs with a local company, and the cab driver picked me up at my hotel at like 2:00 a.m., because it was about a 2 or more hour drive to the location. So getting up that early was killer, but definitely worth it. If interested, the company is Chiang Rai Taxi. They are a bit difficult to deal with via email, because they are not that well-versed in English, but they charged me just 2000 baht to take me everywhere I wanted to go for two days, included airport pickup and drop-off the ride to Phu Chi Fah, waiting for me while I climbed and explored, driving me back to Chiang Rai, driving me to the White Temple and the Black Temple. So all that for about $66 USD. In the U.S., two days of private hire cabs would have costs hundreds of dollars. It was Loy Kratong while I was there, so I went to the local Loy Kratong festival, removed from Chiang Rai city center about 2 miles, in a local park along the river, and apparently off the beaten tourist track, because it was just me and about 2 or 3 others who were the only farangs in the entire festival grounds. Great fun, lots of food, and bright lights, music, games, and festivity, and I got to buy a kratong, and light the candles and float it on the river in an authentic festival with locals. While all the other tourists, who did not know enough to know about Loy Kratong spent their time in downtown Chiang Rai at the fake night market for tourists.

I’ve just been back from there and seen the rainbow as well. I stayed two nights at PhaTang Hill, 30 km away from Phu Chefha (I hope u gonna visit there as well). There are at least 6 peaks open for tourists now, located along the way; Phu Chefha, Phu CheDao, Phu Chedeon, 102-103 Peak, 104-107Peak, Phu PhaMon. I summited 4 of them including Phu chefha and their beauty are on par. The 107 peak is the highest peak in Chiang Rai and the view there is 360 degree. Very amazing.

Being a bike mechanic, a tip for you is that you shouldn't use the choke at any time after the bike has warmed up, you may need it on a cold morning, if it is stalling at idle a minor adjustment of the idle screw is what's needed to increase idle speed. If the bike is hard to start hot, no choke but maybe full throttle when you kick it. Love the videos hope to be back in Northern Thailand soon to ride.

Thais can be pushy on the roads but then in contrast on a 2-3 lane everyone will just STOP to allow a car do a U Turn. 10 years driving here in BKK and and this still bamboozles me on a daily basis.
It’s not all supposed to make sense here and every time I have been bogged or flat tyre etc there has been someone stop to help.
That just doesn’t happen where I am from in 2021.

Your are killing me Paddy. Every time I watch one of your videos. My bucket list grows. Dreamy needs to be put out to pasture to live out her life. Luckily Thailand is mostly Buddhist. Its possible for Dreamy to be reborn in to a younger newer self. Love your perseverance to push forward. Beautiful !!! Not sure how I would be riding a twenty year old motorbike in the rain in the middle of no where. By myself. Next Level for sure !

Paddy don't pull the choke on a hot engine, you will flood it. If it won't idle when hot then you need to up your idle speed. Also if on a hill and it won't start then you can jump it by putting it in a higher gear ,rolling down and let the clutch out.

It's a great video. worth the wait and see And you know how much it's worth to wait patiently to see if there's a beautiful picture to be seen. You don't have to answer because the answers are all in this video. It's super beautiful beyond words.

You heeded my advice, well done. Next stop Doi Chaang, then Doi Tung (with Doi Chang Moop looking over to Burma), Doi Mae Salong. I could go on
