Older Rugers will do this on the mk II, For some reason the firing pins always wear out fast & if anyone has been dry firing it forget it. I believe it's fron the heavy hammer on the unit exerting to much force on the pin. That's why the light strikes on the rim. Heck yeah I had fun making this video. I love shooting .22 firearms, especially pistols, and I'm hoping to do another .22 ammo review in the near future if the weather cooperates.
I picked up 1,000 rounds of that Herter's before this plague hit, but never got to try it out. I bet my SR22 won't care. That pistol eats everything. The Buckmark, though - what a pain to clean. The one I have was made the first year of production for that pistol. Maybe they've made the later models easier to clean without taking it apart with a screwdriver? Still need to get one of those Winchester Wildcats. I sure like that rifle, since I saw you review it.
Nice review. I'm wondering if maybe the Mark II's firing pin spring is just a tad too weak to reliably pinch the Herter brass enough to set off the priming compound. I had that problem with a batch of Remington "Yellowjacket" .22LR ammo a few years back, using a Ruger Mark II target model. I've shot a fair amount of Herters.380 95gr FMJ ammo out of a Ruger LCP with no problems at all. Their 115gr FMJ 9mm Luger ammo likewise has been reluable. Nice rifles you had there. Be well and stay safe.
Interesting, informative and well done review on an ammunition I have never heard of! Thank you. Caveat? Don't load 'em in a Ruger Mark II. I once owned a Mark II and as I recall they are not picky about ammo.
@@boogerdog5247 I think Herter's 22 LR is sold by Cabela's and is an in house brand. Mixup98 didn't say that but I saw it mentioned on another video. I regret ever having sold the Mark II.
It was interesting to see you run it in different guns. My 40 S&W Shield did not like it. It was not awful for the range. I would have about 1 malfunction every 3 mags or so. It was dirty though and my other ammo did not like to feed as well after running the Herters. It looks like it may be okay for cheap range ammo, though some guns won't be happy with it.
I never cleaned my guns from one trip to the next. Only when I start having malfunctions will i give it a range clean up and get it going again. Afterwards ill take it and clean it good but thats very rare.
I recently picked up a Walther P22, and picked up some Herter's, since that's what they had at the shop. Had about eight misfires with it, out of about 200 rounds fired. I kinda suspected it might have been the ammo, and this video vindicates that belief. Thanks for the information.
mixup98 .. Just got 500 rounds 45ACP 230 GR ball from Bass Pro Shop for $159.90, thats a factory case, shipped from Utah. Also 2K rounds of their 9mm 115GR Ball for $7.99 a box, it just went up to $8.99 and is listed as unavailable ... Got 500 rnds .38 Special 130GR FMJ for $15.99 a box of 50, it wont ship till the 16th of June. My longest wait has been 2 weeks with them on line. Yes it's Winchester White Box .. Herters has been much more available as has been Freedom Munitions although they just ran out of all .38 Special and Herters is out of .357 Mag as of 6-5-2020 ... Thanks for the great videos Muchacho & God bless ! P.S. keep em coming
$7.99 for a box of Herter's 9mm is an excellent price and it sounds like you got lucky with your ammo purchase. Stay safe, shoot straight and thanks for always watching my videos.
@@mixup98 Update: BassPro sent one box Herters .38 Special ammo and cancelled the other 9 ... Now thats stupid as the shipping cost will run them almost the cost of that single box of ammo. Selway Armoury in MT has HSM .38 Special box of 50 125 GR PSP for $18.99 a box in stock now ... CDNN Investments has a bunch of TULA .38 Spec 130 Gr FMJ at $11. a box of 50 but some folks have had problems with the steel cases sticking in the cylinder. CDNN also has brass case boxer S&B 148 Gr HBWC ammo bx of 50 for $20. a box... All I been able to find actually in stock.
Nice to see the different rimfire guns. I plan to shoot my 10/22 a bit tomorrow. I put a butt extension piece on it. It feels better against my shoulder with a little bit larger area and like the little bit of extension. Nice fit. I was thinking about getting the ruger mark IV 22/45 in the future. Great shooting and video! The slow motion side shot was very cool. 👍
Always informative & entertaining. Thanks! I have had good luck with Herter's .38 special & 9mm ammo. Just like you said though, it is a "smokey bullet." Reminds me pf that crappy CCI aluminum cased junk. I have had lots of trouble with Herters 00 buck! My shotgun HATES it. For whatever reason, it's hard too load & dosen't cycle well for me. It's a very good price but, I won't buy anymore of it for my shotty.
Maybe someday I will find some Herters 00 buck and do a review on it and see how it cycles through my shotguns. Thanks for the suggestion David and thanks for watching.
I tryed herters 150 gr 30-30 i wasn't happy with the groups i got federal has never let me down but i would give herters another shot with the 22 lr i would probably use it in a bolt Action then a auto loader
It's made by Winchester. I found a lot of the rounds in my box where the bullet was loose in the brass casing. I won't be buying any more of it. I have had much better results with Federal, CCI, and Remington 22LR packs.
This is ironic- the Winchester white box bulk .22lr I have won’t run in my pistols either. The 100 rd slip cases or Winchester are higher quality, they work fine in my pistols. The bull Winchester has the “super x” headstamp, the slip cases have a “w” as the headstamp. The HERTERS stuff I think has a “22” as aheadstamp
You're right, the Herters is stamped "22" on the head. The 100 round cases of .22 ammo also run through my pistols better but I usually have good luck with the white box ammo, too.
With my MKIII 22/45 I've noticed that sometimes the dirty ammo gets caught up in magazine and doesn't rise up to proper feed angle for bolt to catch and chamber. Sometimes it will feed but because angle is off it will pinch the round. It's 22 ammo, so it's not all going to be quality stuff. Still, it's a lot of fun!
Been a while since I watched one of your videos, but always been subbed. Still remember that long range shot you hit with that 38 snub. You are a crack shot. Great video.
Good morning and welcome back to my channel. I have lots of new videos and I hope you get the chance to watch most of them. Stay safe and thanks for the sub.
I wonder who or what Herter is! I bought a couple of CHEAP soft gun cases with HERTER'S blazed on them, they are fairly good, just a bit above the protection of a gun sock. They're ok , I guess. My Ruger pistols don't much like the Winchester Wildcat ammunition too,...I have not yet seen this Herter's ammo. Now for the heck of it, when I see some I will just have to buy some to see if I get the results that you got here. ( I'm betting I do ! ) Thanks for this, it's great to see a video like this on a Saturday morning to watch while I have my breakfast. Kind of starts my day off a little better. In fact any video from 'mixup98' is well worth your viewing time.
Reg Sparkes Herters is just a name now, but back in the day a guy named Herter (George, I think)put out a catalog with outdoor sports equipment, guns and ammo. His catalog was a hoot to read, as everything in it was the best there ever was, and he wasn’t shy about telling you so. Wish I still had some of the old catalogs.
I have several other .22 pistols that have never been shown here on youtube but maybe someday I will break them out and get them in front of the camera.
I shot a box out of a Walther 1911/22. It fed ok but about 1 in 10 rounds split the case along the rim. Seemed like they put too much powder in the case. Poor quality control.
No doubt, having the Herter's brand name, the description on the box waxes how it is the finest ammo money can buy and how you'd be ever so fortunate to have some. That is if Winchester continues the tradition of Herter's marketing, a.k.a., the Herter's Catalog. :D
It's weird that it is the Ruger MkII that had a problem with the ammo. I have a MkI and it's eating everything I put in it. The less finicky .22 pistol you can imagine. That Buckmark sure is a nice gun but I prefer it's older brother and predecessor, the FN 150 (or Challenger or Medalist). Great video as usual!
I was very surprised that my MKII didn't like this ammo as it too will eat anything (I thought). I would love to own an older Challenger or Medalist someday as they are excellent pistols.
@@mixup98 They had a really slick catalog too. Some of the pictures were worth cutting out and framing. Wish I did that. Something to remember the old days. Back when we were Americans! Oh well, gone are the days my friend.........
I find with some .22 ammo out there it is a rim thickness thing that makes the failure to fire malfunction, the rims are too thin on the most budget value-priced bulk pack. I agree though, If I needed ammo and that was all they had, you gotta do what you gotta do.$20 for 500 rounds, hey, as long as I know it is reliable in rifles, shoot it in rifles. Just don't shoot it in your pistols. -Dave
Sure do enjoy ya videos. I bought a new Kel tec PMR 30 22 mag. It was horrible was going to sell it. I bought a loader for the magazine has never failed me again. . If you get a chance could you do something on a PMR 30. Thanks so much. I'm a fan of you and ya son.
I would love to review the PMR 30 and I hope to get my hands on one someday. Hopefully when that happens I'll be able to find ammo to shoot through it.
Hi Mixup! ,how you doin. It's always a pleasure to see your shooting vids. Moreover, the shooting terrain of Southern is equally beautiful. Keep shooting. Sometimes I really wish that I had access to such a vast field havin a go at some expired soda , Cheers
Hello Haroon. It's always a pleasure to hear from you and if I haven't already I would like to thank you for the sub. Stay safe and cheers from southern Nevada.
As far as rimfire goes, Winchester .17 HMR has had issues for me. Split necks & bullets falling into the case. Don't think I've used any Herter's rimfire stuff.
Thank you for another great review. I have a question outside of the ammo; as you know I just purchased a Ruger GP100 two and a half inch barrel brand new in the box. I just love it. I'm thinking about getting another revolver. What do you think about the Ruger GP100 4-in barrel or a Smith & Wesson 686 4-in barrel? by the way it's hot here in southern Arizona. Thanks again...
Over the years I have owned several S&W 586 (blue steel) revolvers and I absolutely loved them. If I were buy another one it would be the 686 (stainless) 4-in barrel model. You just can't beat the smooth trigger on a S&W revolver.
You said the Herter's 22 ammo was made by Winchester. My S&W Victory won't shoot the Winchester Wildcat ammo but like your Ruger Mk 2 will shoot Super X just fine. It's the only 22 ammo that it doesn't like that I've tried.
If they fed flawlessly in all of your rifles, but not your pistols, you have a pistol problem. Sometimes it takes an ammo like this to show you that you have an issue. You have two. Light strikes, which is not the ammos fault, and a jam which would be an extraction or stiff recoil spring problem. I hate it when some blame ammo just because it’s a .22lr. And just because it’s cheap does not mean it might not just shoot some some sized groups. I have know folks who compete with Anschutz rifles, and find that their rifle prefers Winchester Wildcat ammo. The cheapest ammo you can buy. So without actually tearing that ammos accuracy, you cannot speak to how good or bad it might be.
There's a youtuber that tested many different kinds of ammo in several different target 22lr pistols (and made a chart). Anyone know who that was? (I thought it was Mixup98, but I don't know). He showed that the Ruger MK pistols and one other pistol (I think the Buckmark) fired every single round reliably... and there were two others that fired every round reliably except the two subsonic rounds (I think the S&W Victory and the Beretta Neos). Anyways, if anyone knows I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know... and if I find it beforehand, I'll try to post it here for other people (interesting/useful info, IMO).
Bought some during this panic as target ammo so I wouldn't use up my good stuff. Works ok in rifles but really seems to hang in pistols. But good price for target stuff
I've shot a Ruger MK3 that hates Winchester 22LR ammo but runs great on federal ammo. Your results do not surprise me if the herters is made by winchester.
Are the projectiles any good not so much the ammunition but the projectiles are they accurste and are they any good. I know Win ccj ester owns them S&B use to but just wondered about the projectiles themselves.
The bullets (projectiles) look okay but there is an occasional bullet that is either loose in the case or slightly deformed, which is common with most bulk .22 ammo.
I also miss my northern Nevada range...but I don't miss the cold weather or thin air up there (altitude was over 6400 ft.) The red dot on my takedown Ruger is an Aimpoint model 9000C which is no longer in production.
22 is always dirty. Ruger got famous on their 22 automatic pistols. I’ve had mine since the mid-70s and only found one or two brands of ammo that it wouldn’t just eat up. The way ammo is now they probably boxed up all the stuff that falls off the assembly line and said now is a good time to to dump it. Lol What magnification is Aimpoint on 10/22 breakdown??
Never a bad day when MixUp puts out a video...
I got some of them about a month ago. That ran good but they were dirty as hell. Had to do a lot of extra cleaning.

@James Dunn...I've had a Mark Ruger pistol since 71' and it has always eaten anything fed to it, but never tried Herter's.
@@boogerdog5247 I think Herter's 22 LR is sold by Cabela's and is an in house brand. Mixup98 didn't say that but I saw it mentioned on another video. I regret ever having sold the Mark II.
@@jamesdunn9714 You're correct.
Just like Monarch is the store brand for Academy, Herter's is the store brand for Cabella's.
Today my son and I shot my Ruger 10/22 takedown model and it will be in our new video probably tomorrow!
I won't watch a mixup98 video I don't like, therefore, I always hit the "Like" button first, then watch the video.
My Ruger MK II did NOT like Remington Thinderbolts at all, but all other ammo runs smooth as a dose of EX-LAX
Yes. That is correct. The Herter’s contract is being filled my Olin Brass (Winchester) right now.
Thanks for the info on the .30-30 ammo. I might buy a box or two and do a review using my old Marlin .30-30 carbine.
Now for the heck of it, when I see some I will just have to buy some
to see if I get the results that you got here. ( I'm betting I do ! )
Thanks for this, it's great to see a video like this on a Saturday morning to watch while I have my breakfast.
Love your .22 collection
I have several other .22 pistols that have never been shown here on youtube but maybe someday I will break them out and get them in front of the camera.
Herter's - Keep it for the rifle, avoid the pistols with it!!
Ditto...
Nice shooting with the .22 rifle.
Thanks David.
Awesome video and great shooting
Thanks YoJimBo 👍🤠
@@mixup98 anytime friend would the Herters 22cal projects work well in other 22 or .224 format rifles or pistol?
I bought some archery gear from Herters about 200 years ago and it still performs. I thought Hertrs went out of business a long time ago.
I remember Herters reloading equipment from decades ago and I believe they did go out of business but it appears that Winchester has bought the name.
@@mixup98 They had a really slick catalog too. Some of the pictures were worth cutting out and framing. Wish I did that. Something to remember the old days. Back when we were Americans! Oh well, gone are the days my friend.........
I always loved your videos.
I appreciate that Arthur.
Lol ya right
Hi Mixup! ,how you doin.
Great Reviews and entertainment No Bullsht and Hype Rite to the point.🇺🇸🍻🤜🏻
You should try the 380 . It shoots fine in my Taurus Spectrum
Thanks for the suggestion Samuel 👍👍
As far as rimfire goes, Winchester .17 HMR has had issues for me.
Split necks & bullets falling into the case.
Don't think I've used any Herter's rimfire stuff.
My Ruger SR22 hates this ammo. I'm glad to see it works well in the Ruger 10/22.
If I can get my hands on an SR22 I will review it with the Herter's ammo and see what happens.
Just picked up a box at Bellas , 28 and change up here after taxes. Bullet looks just like the 333 and 555 bricks Winy sells.
Great review Mixup! I see this stuff at Cabela's all the time and was wondering if it was any good.
Thanks Dan. Not my first choice but it works (maybe).
Thanks for the video, looks and sounds like kinda standard bulk 22 so it is what it is and that's cheap fun (just not with a mk2!😀)
Looks to be good ammo, will have to get some thanks.
You're welcome Kerry.
Another rest vid! I’m a new shooter and I just shot a bunch of this stuff with my M&P .45 without any problems.
Wow! You put whitewalls on the truck. Looking good!
A little bondo and some paint and she'll be good as new :>)
I Have That Very Same Camper SS Browning Buckmark Mixup98 I Absolutely Love Mine and My 2 Other Buckmarks 😀😊😀
I will try to do a video on my Buckmark sometime this summer. Heck, I might even have a second one by then.
Nice 50th anniversary MK 2 Ruger.
Just found your channel. Benj watching your videos
Thanks Michael. I have about 240 videos was it might me a long night for you.
@@mixup98 have. Think else to do
Check out his other channel to! Wild west outdoors.
You said the Herter's 22 ammo was made by Winchester. My S&W Victory won't shoot the Winchester Wildcat ammo but like your Ruger Mk 2 will shoot Super X just fine. It's the only 22 ammo that it doesn't like that I've tried.
I like CCI for my 22lr ammo
herters seems to be underpowered. love your vids.
That looks like my back yard.
Greetings from southern Az
Greetings and good morning, neighbor.
Another great video my Friend. Buddy I appreciate your time in making these videos, thank you!~John
My pleasure John and thank you for being an eight year subscriber.
@@mixup98 It's been my pleasure!
Mixup98 do you live in Wyoming? The background of your videos really looks like it lol we just moved to Casper Wyoming 4 weeks ago
No, unfortunately I've never been to Wyoming. My videos are shot in southern Nevada.
Do review on the browning
Sounds like a good ideal. Maybe sometime in late summer I can do a review on this great pistol.
They run great in my Winchester mod 190. Ruger just aint all that.
TY ur Dedication is Impressive ! Njoy ur videos alot & learn stuff also ;)
Thanks for watching my videos Kipper.
not all 22 lr are for pistol use look for the boxes they say for pistols like win ester silver tip or federal punch
I've shot a Ruger MK3 that hates Winchester 22LR ammo but runs great on federal ammo. Your results do not surprise me if the herters is made by winchester.
Liked it before he said good mornin. I've always wanted a Browning buckmark, just never picked one up.
Thank you Mr. Von Cheeseburger :>)
@@mixup98 You have one of the best gun channels on youtube. Simple straightforward reviews. And then right to the point, how good it shoots.
22 CCI blazer in red milk carton great ammo
Are the projectiles any good not so much the ammunition but the projectiles are they accurste and are they any good. I know Win ccj ester owns them S&B use to but just wondered about the projectiles themselves.
The bullets (projectiles) look okay but there is an occasional bullet that is either loose in the case or slightly deformed, which is common with most bulk .22 ammo.
Great review - thanks
Thanks for watching!
Great shooting as always.. I miss your Northern Nevada range.. what is that red dot on your takedown?
I also miss my northern Nevada range...but I don't miss the cold weather or thin air up there (altitude was over 6400 ft.) The red dot on my takedown Ruger is an Aimpoint model 9000C which is no longer in production.
Highly recommend it
What'S up? We have plenty of ammo here in Iowa.
Lol
What magnification is Aimpoint on 10/22 breakdown??
The Aimpoint has no magnification, it simply puts a red dot on the target.
