An immense voice completely at the service of music, not only of the score and notes. The singing is much more expressive and touching, true, than what could have been Merritt, another great tenor who afford this role, which certainly had more ringing treble in high notes ...but not the expressiveness and roundness of sound that Spyres has on the whole vocal register. A real wonderful perfomance perfectly suited by the conductor.
This wonderful concert performance of Ermione was performed at the Lyon Opera. Spyres was joined by Angela Meade and Dmitri Korchak. As always, Spyres was magnificent. That November I was in Europe primarily to see Juan Diego Florez in Les Huegenots in Berlin, but was glad that I could accommodate a quick side trip to Lyon. This whirlwind trip to Europe was such a great pleasure and blessing to revel in the singing of two of our very best tenors. We are so lucky to be able to enjoy such great singers.
The performance of Chris Merrit and Rockwell Blake in ROF Ermione OF 1987 remains one of the highest peaks in RossIni interpretation IMHO,. Spyres as Pirro is excellent too He dominates with apparent ease the monstruous vocal range of this aria

I have one from their concert last week. Superb! (We loved sitting in the front row that night, almost literally at his feet. Lovely evening.)

Don’t think his voice is right for Othello or Manrico. No ringing topnotes. It’s one thing being able to sing the first duet in Othello, but for the rest of the role you need a real dramatic robust voice. I’ve heard him live and he simply doesn’t have that kind of voice. Hopefully he’ll never venture into this madness! He’s magnificent singing the parts he’s singing now. Who knows, maybe when he’s 50?

Michael Spyres may give excellent performances in Othello, Manrico (Trovatore), Tamino or Florestan (Fidelio)
