  • Gerry Porter deals in the finest drums and cymbals in the world at hazelshould.com, and he shares his immense knowledge of ultra-rare, famous, and valuable cymbals with us in this unique episode! We talk about what makes the Istanbul K's so rare and sought-after, the power of a celebrity owned cymbal (Tony Williams, John Bonham, Roy Haynes), and rare cymbals that aren't just the usual suspects, such as hi-hats, splashes, and crashes that you should be on the hunt for! Gerry also gives us the scoop on what he thinks is the next thing in the drum world that will blow up in value and be a collectors item.
Check out Gerry's amazing site at www.hazelshould.com

I love this. I haven’t bought an acoustic drum kit since 1982, but I keep buying cymbals! My latest is from a couple of weeks ago - 13” K/Z combo hi-hats from a local used shop. They’re fantastic!

This is truly amazing story about Hazelshould (Gerry Porter). I 've watched and admired throughout time the volume of gear he has. Truly interesting. Ultimately, as he pointed out that it is usually the drummer and his technique that influence sound in a sense. Just as cymbals are all different. Drummers and techniques are too.

Yes!! I found an old fire alarm bell in the trash. And wow!!! It’s the most,Clean cutting,Pure tone bell in my setup.luckily I had a l shaped cymbal arm that resembles an lp mount to mount upside down for perfect positioning.

UFIP splashes are pretty magical. Charlie used an 18” UFIP china as his crash, and the flat ride was Paiste 602.

My first drum set I got for $40 was a heap of crap but the cymbal bag that came with it had 4 cymbals. Including some matching late 70s zildjians and this early ufip 10 inch. It sounds amazing and I imagine is worth a bit now!

Agreed! I have always been mostly a Sabian guy, but I used to work in a drum shop, and all manner of cymbals passed through the shop…I first heard UFIP there. I have an 8” UFIP Class series splash that is my absolute favorite cymbal that I own. I’ve recorded with it dozens of times back in the day, and I can always hear it cut through and sing out, but it blends perfectly with the other cymbals. Perfection!

The Low Boy conversation reminded me of a dear departed friend of mine, Billy Conway, who was using one towards the end of his career. No hi-hat at all, just the Low Boy. He didn't miss having hats too much as I recall.
He was pretty unconventional. He also had the hole on his bass drum on the batter side. Totally worked.

I wound up with a small splash, fairly old looking, with a large bell and small hole that has a number 2 written on it in black marker. I saw the same cymbal on Stewart Copeland's kit in some old live Police videos, except the 2 (same handwriting ) was written on the underside of his. I'm trying to find out what I have but can't find any info. No stamp. no serial number, nothing but the 2 written on the top of it. Weird.

Matt Chamberlain bought this old A I tested out for a few days in 1996. I said no then changed my mind a few days later but it was gone. I’ve always regretted not buying it. I was 18 and my jazz ear hadn’t developed yet. Anyways, I still remember how good it was and would love to hear it if anyone knows Matt or his videos where he’s playing an old 22.

Honestly, I believe the Tama bell brass snare is not all that rare. They were offered in their catalog as early as 1980. Phil Gould was playing one with Level 42 in 1982. They were made through the 80s. Not a limited single run drum by any means. But with Nevermind it has become iconic and " rare". But there are thousands out there. Most guys just keep the. No, they ard not worth 15,000 or 10,000 of even 5,000. Great snare. For playing. 2,000 max. Seriously. But the deal is, there are a lot of hobbyist drummers who are lawyers or doctors and will pay ANY amount for it. They drive the price. Drummers drive the lore. Players make anything sound great. Don't even get me started on a crappy old Acrolyte. Yes. They sound good, but there are more of those than any other snare. Not worth more than 125.00. Really.

Jazz players don't believe in crash cymbals. The rare vintage cymbals that are 18" and under are still called ride cymbals. Kind of an arbitrary distinction that was created later in cymbal history.
