This is so great to see/hear Dan. He mentions several of the guys I used to work with and am still in contact with about this old history data collection. I'm so glad to see this come more to the forefront with this video effort. Thank you to Todd, Nils, Steve, Dan, and Ed Clift, as well...the works we all did to pull these early, preserial cymbals together. Best wishes..great interviews.
I had a couple of Paiste Stambuls (20” and hihats) when I started 45-50 years ago. Then the first 2002s (20 ride, 16 crash). Today I have Lots of cymbals and at least 13 are Paistes. Many favorite recordings also with Joe Morello, Roy Haynes, Carl Palmer, Ian Paice, John Bonham, Danny Gottlieb, Jeff Porcaro and Paul Wertico who plays Paiste cymbals.
Thanks Dan and Bart for a resourceful video of Paiste Cymbals. The mystique occurs early with British rock drummers, jazz drummers the Ludwig Drum Co., and the availability in the USA.
I used to play... and i remember i had various Paiste cymbals - an 18" Formula 602 flat ride (beautiful but only at low volumes) but i mainly had the cheaper types of Paiste. I had (in mid 1980's) a 505 ride cymbal the bell of which sounded like the Paiste ride cymbal Phil Collins and also Stewart Copeland were using at that time (2002's?)
Another great interview with Mr. Garza. One thought, i would think that Wuhan (and other Chinese makers) was making gongs and china style cymbals before Paiste or any other western cymbal maker.
For a long time I was turned off by Paiste, because when I started drumming, their entry-level 302, 502 and 802 cymbals were everywhere here in Finland, and took along time since I could afford better stuff (a set of Sabian XS20), and I saw Paiste as an entry-level brand, like a fool 🤷🏻♂️ Since then I've been through alot of cymbals, and ended up with a collection of Paiste Signature, and Signature Dark Energy -cymbals 😎 da best
Outstanding so knowledgeable ive been afraid to invest in Paiste cymbals iam going to really check them out again and truly compare to what ive been use to and others i switch drum companies a couple of years ago or more maybe time for a cymbal change also thank you my last go around im in my mid 60s still dreaming of drumming like a rock star but now a weekend warrior in Jazz church lessons soul funk reggae rap country blues RB whatever i can get whats the best jazz yet versatile Paistie cymbals as a complete set why? Want to try 16 hats 14 and 12 best 15 if all i can get ride 2/ crash ride 1/ crash 2/ effects/1 and stack 1 china with zizzles ? 1/ two or three splashes yes the works i favor dark cymbals but can play and have on anything been ziljian all my life have sabians no meniel but love them want high end cymbles have mixed them also over the years thank you once again
Funny how americans see the prize of cymbals.. maybe the paiste are cheap for you but in Germany its normal prize range i think. Also here the market is full of paiste and we have less the american vintage stuff (except maybe some zildjian)
If it's 1% discounted, people get a bit too excited and call it "cheap". I don't see any cheap professional cymbals or much else these days. (Thanks China Joe)

Jack’s Drum Shop in Boston sold Paiste too. EU Wurlitzer was a good shop.

Question for Dan. When collecting cymbals, do you play them normally as you would when leisurely practicing/jamming, or do you go lighter on them?
Depends on the cymbal, I'd take it easy on a thin crash or paperthin! Heavier cymbals can take harder hits.

Funny how americans see the prize of cymbals.. maybe the paiste are cheap for you but in Germany its normal prize range i think. Also here the market is full of paiste and we have less the american vintage stuff (except maybe some zildjian)
