Ahh. It is a good Saturday morning when my favourite retired ADHD researcher posts. 😊 I am a former teacher, now ADHD educator and an ADHD brain myself. You have been an invaluable source of information. Thank you so much for your continued efforts, even in your retirement!

Thank you for again emphasizing the correlation vs causation issue. Us ADHD mothers of ADHD kids do not need more blame!

IQ & age research resonated really well. I wasn't diagnosed until at the ripe age of 33 (F). And I graduated i.a. with a Master of Sciences from a School of Economics with honors. Took me forever, but at least I did well. And I'm continuing to study because of this underachiever-syndrome I'm experiencing thanks to the delay in graduating and feeling I haven't done as well in life as I should have considering how well I've always done at school.

6:39 As the son of a single Central American immigrant mother I'm willing to posit that, at least in my experience, the reason there was a long delay in my diagnosis was cultural. Many people from this demographic don't believe ADHD is a real condition, and definitely didn't in the mid 90s.
As for the melatonin section, I also suffer from horrible cluster headaches, which are linked to a problem with a person's circadian rhythm. I take melatonin but mainly because it's helped alleviate my cluster headache recurrences. They are truly awful.
Thanks for your weekly updates Dr. Barkley. They help keep me regulated... which as we all know is one of THE ADHD struggles. 😂

Interesting that in your culture adhd isn't regarded. I have found the same in my italian culture, and I am a typical undiagnosed female child of the 80s, misdiagnosed with anxiety and depression until adhd diagnosis 3yrs ago. It's so unfortunate, and I grieve for all the adhd brains, males included, who's success in life was majorly stunted due to parental and cultural neglect. But hey, at least wr know now, and can do something about it! Thanks, in an immense way to Dr. Barkley!!!

Thank you once again, Dr. Barkley for keeping us informed about the recent research in ADHD. Your weekly research updates help keep me informed and give me a sense of keeping up with what is being learned out in the field. I'm appreciative that you include research from other countries that we may have heretofore believed did not have a strong ADHD awareness. After a three-year retirement, I'm back at Landmark working in academic advising. I just couldn't keep away from this amazing population of college students and love to watch their progress despite their ADHD challenges.

My take on late diagnosed children of mothers that are poc: could it be racism in the vein of : "they're not hyperactive or have emotional disregulation. It's just the exotic temperament of their mother's that's coming through. They're not disruptive, that's just the way those black/mexican/latino/whatever people are."

I will take a guess and suggest that the reason for later diagnosis in children with non-white mothers is cultural. My mother is South American and does not believe in ADHD and is generally distrustful of doctors and the medical community. The idea of giving a child an amphetamine for them to behave and pay attention would be appalling for her.
That's likely part of the reason for my own late diagnosis.

Dr. Barkley, what is the effect of language on emotion regulation in ADHD? I’m bilingual and find that it’s much easier to regulate my emotions in social settings where I converse in English which is not my native language.

It's sad, that publications that don't consider correlation vs. causation still get through a peer review.

Dad jokes on point this week, Dr. Barkley! Correlation does not equal causation indeed, and yes I have been paying attention! It is because of listening to you point it out so many times, that I was able to smell a rat with that last study lol! Thank you!The exercise factor is still interesting though!

3:10, In my teens, I observed that skinny babies often grew up to be fat adults, and fat babies grew into thin adults. I was a skinny baby.
Also, the study doesn’t account for comorbidities, like thyroid disorders, Sotos Syndrome, etc.

Exactly, either black mothers have some sort of protective mechanism similar to what what rich parents do or it might very well be bias on the doctors' side 😢 Some people were also saying that POC families are less likely to seek help. Which is fair though it's not only parents who can first spot ADHD behavior.

Dr. Barkley greetings! Any resources on how to effectively STUDY and retain information better as a university student?
