The test is read incorrectly, the measurement should be viewed from above, or viewed from the side and divided by 10... so when you say "50 to 100", you should be saying "5 to 10"

Good point. But I have one question: When you look from the top, should the tube be in contact with the white part of the paper, or be kept above it? In the first case, the shade of the tube makes the color look at least one tone darker. On the other hand holding it just above perhaps give more sensible and consistent results. I know that we are supposed to place it on the white part, but have you actualy tried the second way?

I have and it makes no sense! I am getting a 10 from placing it on the paper and from side a 50. The example it gives is if you got a 2 then sense it is amplified 10 fold sideways a 2 should be 0.2. There is noway that a 2 would show sideways. I dont know how they mean it. If you get a 2 then the color they show that is close would be a 25 so shouldnt it be just a 2.5? Unless they mean you are getting a 0 and by the side a 2. I cant imagine it being that light from the side to be a 2. Like I said I get a 10 so sense I get a 50 from the side I guess my 10 is actually a 5 but on api I show 0 and the have a reading fro 5 ppm. Unless this is more acurate so I guess I should just throw out the 10 reading from the top and count it at a 5. I hate color matching. Never seems to match up! Debating whether to get the hanna checker for nitrates even though I heard it has a lot of steps and takes 9 minutes I think!

If you are getting a reading of 10ppm or less then read from the side against the white card not from the top,and divide by 10 .....any reading above 10ppm can be viewed from the top with the vial sitting on the white card.

My salifert nitrate test kit showed a hint of brownish instead of white/pink/purple.. what does it mean?

Nice and easy test. I'm switching from. Red Sea to Salifert. Been having problems with my Red Sea kit putting me at 50ppm and when I go to the Local Fish store they're reading zeros on ATI and 3.5 on Salifert. Big difference there huh!

same here api gives me 0 and this is either 5 or 10! Hard to tell sense looking down I get a 10 and from side a 50, so sense you are supposed to divide side reading by 10 I must be actually a 5 and api isnt picking it up even though they have a color for 5!

Do you read these from the top or the side of the test vial as I've noticed some of the Salifert range say look from the above and the rest mention nothing? Thanks Great vids!

+hksubaru For normal readings the test vial should be read from above - with the vial on the card. Side view is for when very little colour is observed and divide by 10 on the chart to get the lower ppm value. That's what my Salifert instructions say for this test.

Absolutely useless. What you need to know is the concentration of NO2 between 50-100 mg/L because this is the critical area that can harm your fish. You don't need to know if your NO3 is 5 mg/L or 10 mg/L.
IS THERE ANY TEST IN THIS WORLD THAT CAN MEASURE NO3 WITH A REASONABLE ACCURACY, FOR A REASONABLE PRICE?

@@semaphor3 People just love to criticize others! He is right about he does need to either read from top or if read from side divide by 10. Only if you get a very low reading do you read from side though, other wise might be inaccurate read that way, its for 10 ppm or below is read from side to vivify accuracy! Dont care for this test. some times side and to p readings dont match. I get a 10 from top and a 50 from side, If its a 10 It should be a 100 from side, so I am counting it as a 5.
