      I love Hanna Checkers too! But I agree with you... too much work. that being said, I will probably break it out if I have a tank reading zero nitrates to see if I can get a more accurate sense of what's going on. Once you use it, let me know what you think! Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Same! I was so excited when Hanna finally came out with this test kit since I have all their other tests. Then when I watched videos knowing all along my nitrates are higher than 5, basically the box kit has been sitting there collecting dust. I will definitely use it just to have an exact number of what my nitrates are but as a few others have said, not in a rush. This was a great review and will come back for the step-by-step instructions when I have fresh water made up next time.

    Just did this test for the first time and it wasn't bad. Thanks for the video because the others were horrible. I am starting a 110 gallon fowler tank so I wanted piece of mind that my measurements are accurate.
    One note. My kit did not come with a plastic cover for the needle so I was a tad confused at 5:29 but that plastic cover is not necessary. You can thread and unthread the needle without it.
    My nitrate read 2.05 and multiple by 10 since I diluted = 20.10 ppm

    Thank you for the great instructions on this kit. I have all the other checkers and this is by far the most difficult to use. The absolute worst part is the instructions. They were obviously written by someone intimately familiar with the test kit. This is not how you write instructions that are meant to be used by the average consumer. What they shod do is get the secretary at the front desk. Hand her the kit and the instructions and observe and answer questions as needed. Once they successfully complete the test 3 times, have the secretary write the instructions and go with that.
    I am an actual chemist, and have 30 years lab experience. I've only rarely come by instructions this bad and this is right among the worst. I had to watch this video to even figure out how the test works. Whoever is in charge of writing these instructions needs to be put on bathroom cleaning detail for 2 months and never allowed to write instructions for anything again.
    Thanks to the poster for the video, your smarter than 3/4 of hanna instruments management team.
    A special note, if for some reason your tank is having major problems and you test and get the "5.00" error code (sample over range) you can fill the other vial with clean sea water and use it as a C1, then using the syringe and needle, remove exactly 5.0 ml of the purple solution from the cuvette and replace it with 5.0 ml of clean sea water. Use you clean water cuvette as a C1 blank, then use the now 20x diluted cuvette as a sample. This time just press the button and the new result appears. It may not be 100% accurate, but you will al least be able to tell if it's 53ppm as opposed to 103 ppm. And if like me you did this and got a calculated result of 55ppm, you probably don't need to test it again to be more accurate. Just do your water change.

      Wow, thanks Jim! And that is some great advice at the end! Yeah, the instructions are not great for this product! @@MyFirstFishTank I think the real benefit of this kit is when you get the level down low and are managing multiple parameters with a apex system with doser pumps, you need really accurate results to help with the overall assessment of your automated processes. That's the best application for this device.
      It is simply too complex and too time consuming a test to use as part of a regular testing regime.

    Your video made this so much easier not mention fast. Reading the color cards was driving me nuts. One shade of light give me one reading, another gives me a different reading. Final, something that tells me just what is and more importantly consistently. I think I can live with the time as I only have two tanks, but I respect your reason for not using it. Me too! I was soooo stoked about this one! And then MD sent me one of their preview copies. Well, I usually don’t watch other videos, but as soon as I opened it up I was shocked how many pieces there were. And then there was the filter piece and I had no clue what that was for. It was so complicated that I started by watching the Hanna video on how to use it, and was sort of shocked. I do think it is a high quality test kit, but I’m not sure for who. I have this and I found it not that bad.
    1st: The gasket is obviously there for a reason. It was obvious to me. I didn't have any leaking issues my first time (only done a single test so far).
    2nd: I don't think you need this if you know your nitrates are over 5... Just my opinion. If they're over 5, then use another kit and get them down. I got it because I knew my levels were close to 0 and wanted an exact number.
    3rd: my other kit is red sea. That test takes a min of 11-12 minutes... You said you can get this process down to 15... We are talking about a 3 min difference now.
    It's obviously a personal choice, bit I will take accuracy over time any day.
    Good review though.

Although, Red Sea also makes a high range kit that comes with their marine care set that is much faster. Wanted to point out that during the dilution portion when you added the fresh sea water to the 10ml mark you did not add the proper amount which with these dilution steps will greatly skew your results. The bottom of the meniscus needs to be at the 10ml mark. Not the top of the water level.

    Another comment I have about all hanna checker testers. Clean all your glassware and syringes, pipette tips,and mixing vials using tap water. Don't use soap. Rinse all plasticware with a final rodi water rinse.
    To clean the large mixing vial, A test tube brush is required, especially with this kit. The zinc powder is difficult to get out of the big mixing vial without a brush. I use a test tube brush while rinsing to get the majority out. Then I use a paper towel, twisted into a snake shape, then twist it into the big mixing vial to physically remove any remaining zinc powder.
    Now that's done, you need to rinse all of the glassware with rodi water. Rinse 3 times with a 20% full vial of rodi water, shake and dump. Then shake again to remove residual water. Once the vials have been rinsed, fill completely with rodi water and store the vials full. This will prevent buildup on the vials during storage. Don't forget to remove the used filter paper from the holder and carefully rinse the holder so you don't lose the silicone gasket. Leave the filter holder disassembled in the kit for it to dry.

    Hanna kits just seem to be so hit and miss. I love the Alkalinity and Phosphate test kits but hate the Calcium test and this Nitrate test. Note the Calcium test is also very complex, time consuming and with a very small water sample size making it prone to error. One of the comments below summed it up well, the more complex the test, the more moving parts the higher the margin for error.

    • @MyFirstFishTank
      @MyFirstFishTank  3 роки тому

      Thanks for watching and commenting Gary. Yeah, regarding the calcium test, my exact worry is how small the sample size is. I even consider the 1ml from the diluted nitrate to be too small, so the calcium one really worries me. I have a confession to make... I've started using the nitrate test kit! Not all the time, but I've been trying to really dial in the nitrates on my new clownfish harem tank, so I have found the accuracy to be super helpful. It takes forever, but I've finally memorized all of the steps, so it's a bit easier.

    I think the problem with this test is people have been begging Hanna to make a No3 tester for years. People have gotten used to Hanna checkers that take about 3 minutes or less to get a result. I dont mind the extra steps or time it takes for the accuracy this tester gives. This is the only test kit out there that will give you a dead on accurate result instead on fighting with the perfect ambient light to see what color the reagent it with every other test out there. Is this tester for everyone no, but personally reef tanks are a hobby that I enjoy every part of it not just looking at the tank. I own the Hanna no3 checker as well as all the others they offer, and was grateful when this one came out because i was sick of saying '' well yea this looks like the shade of purple... I think''.

      Haha, I actually couldn't agree with you any more! I've started using this test a bit more since leaving this review. It's a good product for sure. My biggest complaint now is the filtration step. In order for mine not to leak i have to screw it on really hard. That makes it difficult for me to get off. I've also almost lost that clear rubber/plastic o-ring several times. If a future version of the checker could fix those two problems I'd definitely be happier. But it is a good product for sure!

    Though just a heads up - check how to read a liquid meniscus in measuring vials.
    From your video it looks like you're doing it wrong ie. using the sides of the concave meniscus instead of the center.
    What frustates me about all the test kits I've used so far, is that none of them have an explanation as to how to properly read a liquid meniscus - which would seem crucial for an accurate test.

    At around the 2:50 mark you specify using the 5 Ml syringe with the large plastic extension. Assuming you filled to the 4 ml mark on the syringe (you didn't show it in the video). If you draw to the 4 ml line on the syringe, you actually have more than 4 ml. You need to account for the content in the extension tube. That extension tube accounts for a little over a ml of content\fluid.

    • @MyFirstFishTank
      @MyFirstFishTank  3 роки тому

      Hey Bob, thanks for the comment. I used to think the same thing too! But even with the extension tube, it is still 4ml if you draw the syringe to line up at the 4ml line. If you take the syringe up until the liquid is at the 4ml line, then you would be correct. But if you take the syringe to the 4ml line, you'll notice that the liquid doesn't fill all the way. That is because of the extension tube. Does that make sense?

GHL has their ION director coming out this month for which I will look forward to reviews. Not sure of the accuracy of the Reefbot nitrate test but at least it should be consistent. I would guess you could tie it in with an ICP test as a baseline. There are other alternatives and I am sure Trident will come out with something sometime but when you are talking about potentially $1000's of coral, accuracy and regular testing would become important. Something which takes time and is complicated would mean it is less likely to be done as I am sure I am not the only one who is lazy.

    • @MyFirstFishTank
      @MyFirstFishTank  3 роки тому

      Yeah, this is all important to consider. I would be curious to see how accurate this checker is compared to the reefbot or trident. I like your idea of pairing it with an ICP test to really see. I mean, I can be lazy, but I'm sure you're like me. We do what we need to for our tanks right? But a 17 minute nitrate test even pushes my patience! Will you be getting one of these? Thanks for watching and your insights!

      @@MyFirstFishTank I'll admit I do not check nitrate as often now as I did when I first started when I was religious about it. It tends to be stable unlike a lot of other things I test for more regularly such as the core trio, Alk, Calcium and Magnesium which I have to dose. I'll stick to my basic nitrate test kit for now.

      Thanks! The truth of the matter is I still do use this from time to time, especially when I'm really trying to get my nitrates just right! It's a good tester. Hi if I am trying to get my nitrates down and its at 7 lets say 7 would I have to do two test...or can I do a dilution test to cover the below result

    • @MyFirstFishTank
      @MyFirstFishTank  3 роки тому

      Hey there. You can always actually just do the dilution test. Just multiply the results by 10. It's probably not quite as accurate as doing the standard test, but once you are certain your nitrates are low, then you can switch from the dilution version to the non-diluted version. Hope that answers your question!

    Comparing to Red Sea, I think we have the same problems. Have to wait 9 minutes, and have the low range and high range. But watching the video, looks really painful doing the test. Specially the part that you have to prepare a new salt water

    • @MyFirstFishTank
      @MyFirstFishTank  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, it's quite similar to the red sea in terms of wait time. The additional filtration step with the Hanna checker is the most difficult part for me. And having to make a new batch of saltwater just to test? For some of us that's not a problem, but I don't think the average hobbyists keeps spare salt lying around!

    This is crazy! Orgo labs in college were easier than this. Good presentation of the hassles. I will definitely pass. The syringe alone scared me, needles give me the creeps. I've been using the Salifert but I find it almost impossible to tell if my nitrates are 5 or closer to 50 PPM. Just got Red Sea nitrate test kit, have used once, didn't understand the result (NO3 and N-NO3 or something and didn't match Salifert for either) but we'll see, new test kits seem to take time to get used to.

I have no idea how I’m going to draw up “exactly 4ml of Reagent A” when the 5ml syringe HAS NO MARKINGS ON IT. Uh huh. Blank. Thought I would get the benefit of being careful by spending the $100 (Canadian) on the tester and a reagent refill. Nope. Hanna disappoints, not for the first time. @Hanna Instruments, Inc.
