That shouldn't work. The remote control software makes a 19 KHz sine wave that is doubled by rectification by two LEDs to 38 KHz. When you have only one LED and no full bridge circuit with amplifier it stays at 19 KHz, which shouldn't usually be recognised by CCIR equipment.
