What's up everyone?! I hope this EXPLAINED video about adapters, speed boosters and crop factor was helpful. Did I cover what you wanted to know? What else did you want to see or learn about.
Would love to know what you think. Which do you plan on using, or are already using and with what lenses.I am grateful in advance 🙏

Did you know the pythagorean theorem used no x, y or z? (I think you know, but let's assume more people will read this).
The theorem a geometric one: if I construct 3 squares using each side of a rectangular triangle (right triangle? a triangle with one 90 degrees angle!) then the areas of the two sides of the 90 degrees angles, added together have the same area as the square built used the third side of that triangle (the hypotenuse).
And why am I telling this? All of camera lenses optics is called geometric optics - things know in Pythagoras time. Why people don't know this? I'll tell you: people are not dumb and almost everybody has no cognitive deficiency - the people who run the School system are basically dishonest.
Honesty is not only "not to steal", it's also do what is correct regardless of what people will think.

I sure have to say...you are a FANTASTIC teacher. Obviously you learned well, when you needed to. Thorough knowledge on the subject. Thorough command over the language. No faltering or fumbling between sentences....consistently. Your lungs, God bless, are great, you hold your breath modulation perfectly. Above the rest, the video-editing is so cut-to-the-edge. Can't find a point to negate, except that the Pythogarous eguation...well you are not at fault, on that. Math was not my forte. But you made me understand the APSC sensor better. Boy, so much learning, I will again and again visit this video to get my fundas clear. Kudo1 Many thanks.

I am so glad you didn't stick to the party line of "forget about crop factor" because it doesn't change the focal length and dove into the real issue that it does change the 'effective' focal length. Most of us who know something about optics were only confused that some ppl were confused or misrepresenting this. The bottom line is "It doesn't matter that it doesn't change the FL. because crop factor does affect the results which is, It looks like it changes the FL. as in a 1.6 [canon aps-c] crop factor makes a ef 50mm "ACT LIKE" an 80mm. what I wasn't yet sure about because I had not yet researched it was the f-stop. It makes so much sense how you explained it. Other youtubers either ignore the basic math or get it wrong by multiplying one number but not then multiplying by the next. EG: a 50*0.71*1.6 being 56.8mm [effective] is the math of the speed booster effective FL Now, for me...
I have an EF 78-300mm f4-5.6 and while a 120-480mm f4-5.6 doesn't make sense for weddings, with this info, I can see how having a 85-340mm max at f2.8-4 does make sense
For other lenses and primes that aren't available on ef-m yet, a 35mm becomes a "nifty 50 with just an adapter, and now that I know that the f stop won't change, it's going to be both for me.
What I'm now confused about is, why isn't the 22mm prime an effective 22 mm? Is it in fact, an effective 36mm?? and why? EDIT: he answered this but it wasn't that clear. Yes, you apply the crop factor to ALL lenses. That means the 22 prime is basically a 35mm when compared to a full frame camera with a 35mm

Wow. I am hearing this for the first time. Did you actually try this and it did not work? Or it is just a theory. My Efs lenses woks on my full frame body. I just have to zoom in a little to remove the vignette. So are you saying crop lens will not sit at all on a speed booster? On their website, they listed Sigma 18-35 1.8 as a compatible lens and that is a crop lens

I use both, adapter and speedbooster. Especially speedbooster for extreme low light, nightsky, to shoot video of northern lights. And use it with ultrafast lenses already for even more speed. E.g. on a 20mm 1.4 , 35mm 1.2 , 14mm 2.4. Even shooting with fullframe cameras in full sensor mode, despite vignetting at edges, which is not too bad at night, and 16:9 ratio cuts top, bottom vignetting anyway, even more if letterboxing 2.39:1 ... or edit in 1:1 or 4:3 aspect ratio and only corners vignettes . e.g. Sigma 20mm/1.4 gets 14mm/1.0 on full sensor. Samyang 14mm/2.4 gets 10mm/1.7 ... and 35mm/1.2 gets 25mm/0.85 . Pretty cool !

I think I will get an adapter first before I buy a speed booster. I have a lot of Canon EF glass and I want to upgrade from my Canon 5D Mark II to the Canon m50 Mark II for the mirror less experience and benefits over DSLR. But I will buy an speed booster later to try out the effects and experiment verses the adapter. Thank you for this video as it is very clear and helpful.

Wow, what a complete video. I walked away having learned something complete with no useless fluff. I hate fluff.
As far as speed boosters, it makes no sense to me to buy a regular adapter instead. Having both is obviously the best for the reasons that you explained.

This guy is good! I say this mostly because he does a great job in reviewing the "tech backstory," or stuff about WHY things happen - and the math behind f/stops, etc. Stuff I learned 60 years ago, thank God. Most photographers these days are prisoners of all that automation in modern slrs, which are actually computers that capture light (hence, Dslr's). When you can rely on your BRAIN, you are always better off. So his "tech backstory" is the best part of his presentation. All the other stuff - that is, why we tuned in, is actually less important.

I just ordered a Viltrox EF EF-S to EF-M adapter. It was only $37. I ordered a Canon EOS M camera for $109 (that is not a misprint). I also ordered a Kamlan 50mm f/1.1 EF-M lens. That lens will be fun with only manual focus. My Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 lens need the adapter as do the EF 50/f1.8 and EF 75-300 (f/4 to f/5.6) lenses. The Kamlan was only $129. I think it will all work out pretty good. I am currently using a Canon SL2 camera so I am used to APS-C sensors. I just couldn't pass up a chance to get the M for cheap !!!

I bought both the viltrox adapter and the speedbooster, my opinion is that whatever lens I have and the kind of composition I want for my photo I could use either adapter for that. If I want a creamier background the the speedbooster it is or for a closer/macro shot or even just using an ef lens then the ordinary adapter it is.

  • @geraldillo
    @geraldillo Рік тому

Great video. Most speed boosters have a focal reduction of 0.71 That is a rounded down number that actually should be 1/√2 (which can also be written as √2/2) This means that is exactly increases the light inlet by one stop.

I just purchased a canon m50 as a gateway into photography. I have learned so much from your videos so far and recently purchased the viltrox adapter. This video in particular has given me great insight on the differences between the speed booster and adapter. I definitely plan on purchasing the speed booster as well for low light situations.
