  • "Viltrox Speedbooster + 50mm f1.8".
    That's the most common answer I've seen when someone asks what he should buy for the Canon M50.
    In this video I explain the pros and cons of the Viltrox speedbooster for the Canon EF-M system, what a #speedbooster is, what a speedbooster does, how it reduces the crop factor of your APS-C camera and why it actually turns it into a mini full frame camera.
    Is it really worth to buy this accessory for your Canon M50? Let's find out!
    As always, I will be answering all of your comments below, so: Let the games begin!

    Ok, this is how I ended up getting a Speedbooster, and I think many people in the “enthusiasts on a budget” category can relate to my case.
    You get a cheap but reasonably capable body like M50 to have some money left for reasonably priced primes. Obvious choice is 22mm f2 and nifty 50 with an adapter. Get them second hand, and you can enjoy prime lens goodness for a very reasonable price. 22mm (35mm equivalent) for “street”, and 50mm (80mm equivalent) for family portraits you can be proud of. After some time, though, you really want that standard focal length, 50mm equivalent, but zoom lens that you get with the body never quite gets you the result you desire. The problem is, there is no really cheap option for 35mm or 32mm prime whether it’s M, EF or EF-S. If you are on a budget, the only viable option is to get a Speedbooster to pair with the 50mm 1.8 you already have to get about 55mm equivalent prime. Even if you use the speedbooster only for that lens, it is still much cheaper than getting any 35mm prime-unless you go for a cheap manual focus only lens. Of course, the fact that you own an M50 means you are ready to sacrifice some “quality” anyway for the fun of shooting primes for a budget price, so you are not too bothered by softening at the edges and all that-image with a speed booster is still better than kit zoom anyway.
    So, with 22mm f2, Speedboosted 50mm f1.8, and adapted same 50mm 1.8, you finally have all the basic primes covered and you can be happy for some time.

      That’s an interesting point of view. Again, I don’t judge anyone sure in your example, it sort of makes sense from a photography point of view. There is still one single cheap option for a 35mm f2 from yongnuo. It’s a ripoff from the old canon 35mm f2, with that same plastic body and noisy AF but then what can you get from a lens that cost less than 100$.

      What a fantastic comment to add to this great video. Thanks for even more clarity. And I have the same camera lenses and adapters. I guess it's a common scenario. With canon m50 and the right cheap lenses, you can take professional video and photos. Of course you need skill and there are effects that you can not get in very low light, along with obvious limitations due to not having a couple of good zoom lenses. For UA-cam videos, talking head and vlogging and even simple b-roll scenarios, you have it down. Gréât comment. I love that 22mm f/2 and the nifty fifty. What a versatile combo. Next is a good zoom lens to put the icing on the cake, but I have to wait for some cash to roll in. That purchase will be a quality expensive one and the last one for awhile. Have fun.

      I'm a beginner photographer and also a gadget freak. I bought an Eos M10 and an adapter and a crap-ton of old FD lenses. I'm having a ton of fun!
      For the price of a speed booster, you can get an fd 35mm f2.8 and a 50mm f1.8 for close to the same.

    Good advice. I bought both. The Viltrox speed booster and the Viltrox adapter for the same price as one Canon Adapter. Now I have the flexibility to use the adapter or speed booster with each EF lens I purchase, depending on what factors of the lens I want to enhance. For example, I have the new Canon EF 70-300mm IS USM II lens. With the adapter I can use it almost the same as on a full frame camera (100-300) at almost full frame equivalent, but with the speed booster I can use it as an ASP-C lens with a focal range of 120 to 480mm and almost another full stop of light!

    Totally agree. It is good to add that speed booster often reduces quality and sharpness. It also adds a vignette when you use 24 mm lens or wider. Checked in practice! :)

    Nice thing about having an adapter and a speed booster is you can potentially double the usage of your lens collection as you will get two different ‘effective’ focal length from each.
    For example a 50mm 1.8 with an adapter will give wan effective focal length of around 80mm. With the speed booster you’ll get 50mm (ish) focal length (thereabouts) but with f1.2 thrown in due to extra stop of light. So having both diversifies your lens potential usage.

  • @ExploringRevenantsParanormal
    @ExploringRevenantsParanormal 2 роки тому

    I plan on having both. I already have the speed booster and I got it for a few different reason. I film vlog style paranormal content (shoot a lot more at night than I do in the day so I need as much light to hit the sensor as possible). With that being said wide angle shots are also important to me, for example I also have the "niffty50" and the speed booster makes it like a 35mm lens but the adaptor will make that 50mm more of an 80mm lens. So spending around $200 for both will hypothetically triple my lenses, my wide angle lens will be wider or tighter depending on which adapter I'm using and if I need the lens to be "what it was designed to be" I kept my EF/EF-S canon SL2 for a back up so I can just use that camera instead of my canon m50 mark ii.
    I can say I love the EF-M sigma 16mm f1.4 for the canon m50 mark ii but I wish it was a bit wider lol.

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  2 роки тому +1

      I’m sorry that I’m going to be tough, but your understanding of the speedbooster isn’t correct.
      Your nifty fifty doesn’t become a 35mm. It’s a 50mm.
      The speedbooster just prevents your 50mm to get affected by the aps-c crop. Not make it wider.
      If you feel the 16mm is still not wide enough, I would then consider the 10-18 with the adapter. It’s still going to be wider than 16mm. But it comes with a smaller aperture of f4 so you might need to push the iso a bit.

    • @ExploringRevenantsParanormal
      @ExploringRevenantsParanormal 2 роки тому

      @@Tvennet I agree 100% with what you said about it "still being a 50mm" but the speed booster will make it be more like a full frame instead of a crop sensor.
      So with the speed booster it makes the 50mm seem more like a 35mm (50mm full frame) since its not so cropped as apposed to the normal adapter will have the glass further away from the sensor so it will seem more zoomed it like an 80mm lens.
      I know its still a 50mm regardless but if I have the 50mm on my sl2 then I put the 50mm on the speed booster and attach it to my m50 mark ii it looks like 2 different lenses, that's what I'm trying to say.
      You can get 3 different outcomes from the same lens depending on which adaptor you're using (2 different outcomes from the adapters then if you put the lens on a EF mount crop sensor camera it will look completely different than it does in either adaptor" . See what I mean now?

A FILM CAMERA. I also bought the 50mm 1.8 and an ordinary cheap adapter. After discovering the existence of the speed booster, I figured it was a good idea to own one, so I bought it. I would appreciate any suggestions out there. I did join a Facebook group that deals w/ R5C cameras.

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  Рік тому

      Well it’s not exactly the right place, because here it’s about adapters for smaller cameras (the canon M line).
      The R5C has only one adapter that let you put old EF/EFS lenses.
      The R5C is a full frame camera, so if you buy an adapter, you’ll better get some EF lenses, or the native RF mount.
      As for what lenses to get…
      With full frame cameras, the best is to build the « holy trinity » first : 16-35, 24-70, 70-200
      Those lenses come in 2 versions : f2.8 or f4 (cheaper, less depth of field).
      If you want to do UA-cam: get the 16-35 first (or the 15-35 RF).
      That’s pretty much the shortest way to answer your question.

      The speedbooster is for more than just the m50 series. Majority of the people who mod the ef-s lenses are using them on the original EOS M with Magic lantern. The speedbooster corrects some of the major cropping that occurs.
      On the m50 you can use EF apsc lenses with the speedbooster and avoid vignetting while shooting 4k video. The m50 crops in at 4k so there absolutely is a benefit to using the speedbooster.
      Unless you are going for film level quality, most people won't even be able to tell the difference ....keeping in mind this is an entry level camera.

    • @Tvennet

      Hey no worries man, I didn’t take it badly. Like I said, my opinion isn’t very popular. I know tons of people saying the speedbooster is an absolute must buy (but end up just using it with a 50mm 🙄). I bought it the day it came out, and every time i used it, I didn’t see a real benefit. Working with apsc is quite easy, and I think we tend to overthink it a bit too much...

    Hi Thomas, where I am a bit confused here is that my problem is the following : I have a canon m50, the 50mm lens and the adaptor and I would like to use this lens as a second camera angle to shoot videos in my office. However, the image is too cropped as my office is not big enough. In this specific case, do you agree that the speedbooster will solve a problem that the adaptor can’t ? Thanks for your help

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  3 роки тому

      I would first ask « why don’t you use the kit lens? ». If your issue is that your image is too cropped in, the difference between a 50mm + adapter and 50mm + speedbooster won’t be big if you’re in a tight space.
      Let’s say you put your camera behind your desk. If you use it has it is, with the adapter, the image will show what? Your eyes, nose and mouth? With the booster, you’ll see a bit more of your forehead and your chin, but not much more.
      Instead of buying a speedbooster, I would buy the EFS 24mm which is the same price. Or the EFM 22mm which has been reduced in price a couple days ago.
      Both of these are wider and are around 150$ now...

      @@Tvennet thanks a lot for your quick answer. The kit lens at 45mm, the image is dark and I don’t have that blurry background that I like for the second angle.
      With the 50mm, I have 95% of my head in the frame at that distance. I could use it like this but would prefer to see the top of my shoulders at least. For the main camera, I use the 22mm. Something in between (22mm and 50mm) and affordable would be ideal and I was wondering if the speedbooster could be a solution or if I should better look for a cheap 35mm lens. I will check some videos and see if I can find a cheap alternative

    I have a slightly different opinion. Don’t adapt lenses at all, unless you already own lenses for another mount, or for creative reasons, there are vintage lenses that give you a “look” that you want to achieve. Otherwise it is always better to buy lenses that are native to the mount of the camera. Less hassles, and less junk to carry and have to fiddle with.
    Adapters are usually not weather sealed, and unless it is a full manual lens, or the adapter is native (Canon adapter on Canon lens on Canon camera) the performance is rarely as good as the performance of native glass. Adapters and speed boosters are full of promise, but are often disappointing in practice.
    UNLESS you are a professional who knows what you are doing. I use speed boosters and adapters deliberately, mostly to use Nikon manual, Nikon F mount Zeiss, and Canon FD and some EF to Sony and MFT. A Canon FD 50mm f1.2L can be either a 100mm f1.2 on MFT with an adapter, or a 70mm f0.8 with a speed booster. I like this flexibility, BUT, I already own the lenses from decades of owning and using cameras back in the film days. It is logical for me to make use of those lenses, BUT I would not see it as cost effective to buy the adapter and speed booster if I was starting from scratch.
    Native MFT and Sony glass are so much better to use, especially on MFT where Panasonic’s brilliant lens stabilization is so valuable. My advice is always buy native and if you want to save money, buy used lenses. My first 20 years of photography was all shot on used equipment. You rarely need the latest and greatest, just solid gear that does what you need it to do. There is a lot more savings to be made in buying earlier model used native gear than the imagined savings buying new adapters and new non-native lenses.

I see that you are willing to give advices, so I will take my chance. I am getting into photography more seriously for over a year, and have an M50. I also have several EF-M lenses and some M42's. I know how APS-C works, so no problem there. I eagerly want to buy a standard everyday zoom lens like EF 24-105 L f/4. I was considering pairing it with speedbooster because of the added stop of light and also wider field of view. But I am thinking: does it make sense to use an L lens with speedbooster, is the quality that much reduced? I certainly don't have enough money for 2.8 L nor would I invest in something like that at this point. Thanks in advance if you are willing to give me some advice, and anyway cheers to you, I am certainly subscribing!

      @Tvennet  2 роки тому +1

      Hey thanks for watching!
      It’s tricky to be honest.
      If I follow my reasoning, I’d stick to an adapter. The 24-105 would be a 35-150 which is super versatile and being someone who doesn’t really shoot wider than 35mm I would be fine with that. And if I really needed something wider I would use the lenses I have or buy the 10-18 to fill the gap (or the sigma 18-35).
      But if you would replace all your kit with just that lens, then yeah, maybe I would use the speedbooster knowing that I would have to then only invest in EF lenses in the future (and it would then come to maybe one lens, the 16-35?)…and there’s not a really good alternative in EFS or EFM mount…if you want to talk more about it, head over to Instagram it’s maybe easier ;)

      And if you really are one of those people that destroy their EFS mount to put it on a speed booster... I'm sorry but that's totally stupid.
      The EFS lenses are designed for APSC cameras, why would you put it on a speed booster that reduces the crop factor and get a huge amount of vignetting? That completely doesn't make sens.
      And EFM lenses can't be put on the speed booster, the mount is super small. And even if it would be possible...you'll get the same result of vignetting.

    So if you use EFS adapted lenses then they work beautifully with the speedbooster with so little or no vignette.
    Remembering that is you use the digital IS there's a further crop still so using 1080 on the M50 with digital IS works well too.

      EFS lenses don’t work on the speedbooster. The mount hits the glass. And I know that people are « hacking » it by cutting the plastic mount but I wouldn’t advice that.
      The only Crop Lenses that can be mounted on the speedbooster are third party lenses like the sigma 18-35 which has an EF mount.

    this is not true! you can use any sigma/samyang or any other lens that will fit an ef mount... you do not need to buy a top of the line canon ef L lens!
    the speed booster is a good thing to have in your kit and also the adaptor.
    this isnt a hate comment, i really appreciate the video!

      That’s what i said, EF mount lenses. In never said you had to buy L lenses. I don’t even mention them.
      When I say expensive lenses I mean that full frame lenses are quite more expensive than other lenses...in general ;)

    Plus: The quality of the image will decrease with the speedbooster. The edges will become less sharp than on on a "real" full frame camera like the EOS 6D.

    I liked the video. You are also very helpful in the group. I am gonna buy an M50 soon with a regular adapter. BTW, please remove that defocused plant leaves in the foreground from the next video. I have a serious OCD maybe. I found it irritating to my eyes while watching your video on a large display. Thank you, Thomas.

    The big flaw in this argument is that EF-S lenses are rarely for sale, and the ones that are available are crappy kit zooms. Better off buying an FD-EFM speed booster and learning how to use a manual lens like a real photographer.

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  Рік тому

      When a good prime or zoom EF-S lens is less than 300€ and the sigma 18-35 is worth every single penny of it’s 600€ price tag…you don’t complain about ef-s lenses not being « on sale ».
      And there’s nothing making you a REAL photographer by using manual lenses.
