- In my basement, I found an old camp stove I've had for over 50 years but had long forgotten about. Gave it a good cleaning and put in some fresh white gas fuel, and poof... it worked !! The camp stove was made by Optimus and it is the 8R model.
primus stoves were very good and still are they were very popular years back here in Aussie land . This was very cool buddy and it was interesting man I enjoyed it.
They almost last forever... and I posess proof 😄 Thank you, Roland 👊😎👍
@@SpyderWayne Top vide man it was a good idea to do this topic
Stoves are always pretty exciting to us junkies. Thanks for sharing.
Yes they are... especially when you're camping and hungry 😉😅👍
Enjoyed your vid. I found my first small stove (Coleman 502) after 45 years it still works just as it did 45 years ago. I wish everything in life lasted as long and worked so well.
You got that right 👊😁👍
I found mine at a Goodwill outlet in an old orange backpack that had mildew all over it. Had never even heard of it but was glad I opened that bag to see what was inside.
I got some fuel and fired it up! Works great and mine even had the original instructions inside!
Thanks for your video!
They don't make 'em like they used to. These are fantastic little camp stoves that stand up to the test of time 😁👍
Shoulda waited till the end. You answered my question
👊😎👍
Oh please never face that fuel cap towards you! It’s got an overpressure relief function and if it gets too hot it will pop, sending an impressive jet of fuel right at you.
Now that I got that out, it’s a delightful and reliable little stove, isn’t it!?! Nice video!
I have a ton of wonderful memories with this preciius little campstove, I'm glad I never got rid of it 😁👍👍
I enjoyed your presentation of the Optimus 8R. I bought my example more than 40 years ago. It was already in well used condition. I
They certainly don't make them like they used to.. 😁👍
I had one of those little stoves and a tin cup that I heated soups and water up in when I camped back in the 80’s. Wish I could remember where mine went to.
Nice video down memory lane 😎👍
It sure was fun finding an old toy that still works ✌️😁👍
Like Stan said, what a fascinating story! From a Swedish mate! 😎 Great video, Wayne, and I'm glad to see some camping content.
For me, I'm amazed at the stuff I find and learn whenever I research a subject, and I don't even have to go to the library or use encyclopedias anymore... research used to be time-consuming, tedious work... do you remember those days ? 🧐😄
Thank you, Eric. I always appreciate your comments and thoughts. ✌️☺️👍
Hey Wayne, great little video and to see your stove still works after 50 years, cheers Dave
I was glad to find the old campstove, brought back a lot of fun memories, and I was tickled pink that it still works. Thanks Dave ✌️😁👍
Very cool vintage stove.
It is pretty cool this little guy still works but mainly that you still have it. We have a rule around the house that I try to follow as much as possible ….. every 3 or 4 years we go around the garage, shed and crawlspace and if we come across something that hasn’t been used since the last blitz it will get donated, sold or trashed. Well done amigo ! Greetings from Calgary, Alberta.
You're in Wild Rose Country ✌️😁👍
what a fascinating story. Thank you for sharing that!
Thank you so much Stan ✌️😁👍
I remember the Coleman 2 burner stove the Coleman Lantern with those "sock" wick things in them. So cool.
Yeah, those lanterns were bright, almost too bright !! 😎👍
Loved this. I think I will fit my dad's old primus out and get roaring.
If you have a Primus ( which is pre- Optimus ), then you've got a gem 😁👍
Cool beans. Enjoyed your story Wayne. 😊😊
Thanks Larry, it's not quite as old as your hammer head, but it's close 👊😎✌️
That is super cool! I have memories of the Colman white gas stoves. Of course it still works…it’s from 1972….like me😂 that would be my go to stove.
Sometimes, there's a forgotten jewel in all the stuff you keep over the years, this one still has a purpose 😁 Thanks Sean ✌️😎👍
Thanks for sharing this whole story, Wayne...loved it for the sentimental value!! 💜💜🤗🤗 Yes, perhaps, Purple On Three will need it to make coffee when we all travel north!!
Speaking of that trip, my brother in law and his wife have said we are very welcome to stay at their place, he rides an Electra Glide and she rides a Softtail, but I won't hold that against them ☺️😁
@@SpyderWayne oh Wayne😂😅... Thank you so much for asking them!
These are the videos I really love. I love listening to the story in the history and this was so interesting. I had never seen anything like this before and was so super impressed that it's still worked after all this time. And you can hear the memories that were tied to this little device from your youth which were also. Super great video. Thank you for sharing this
Thank you so much. Finding this little camp stove brought back wonderful memories 🙂😄😁
Tommy will be so excited to learn his relatives developed this, lol!!
Hmmm, do you think Tommy G might also be related to the Swedish Chef 😅
@@SpyderWayne there is that possibility LOL
What a cool history of this little stove!!
I knew nothing about the history of that stove until a few days ago... the internet sure is handy 🤔🧐😳😄😄😄
DefinitelY need to make it part of Your journeYs. If nothing else, it will make for a great conversation. Amazing, something so simple, is still working and useful. Love the historY behind it, well at least Your presentation of it. 😃. You can alwaYs find a use for extra hot water. StaY Alert. rYde safe in a fun waY. Keep on SpYdering. 😎🇺🇲.
Thank you so much !! I do have to admit that it took me over 50 years to learn that this jewel of tiny camp stoves has a very interesting history. 👊😎👍
Cool! Rub it like a magic genie lamp!! 😁😁🧞🧞
That takes way too long, but the rubbing works, I wish I had heard of the bic pen or plastic tube hack 50 yrs ago 😊😂
@@SpyderWayne 😁😁😁
Love this I have my optimus 8r and we are taking it camping next weekend. Truck tent and taking my husband camping for the first time,( his first time, with me)😂
It's a great little campstove. When I found mine, it brought back many fond memories 😁
I think it's wonderful that you have a backup method for making coffee!! I love that little pan set...reminds me of the water pot they use on Naked and Afraid, lol!
I sure could have used the little stove last year at VAMM, I forgot to bring the propane hose to connect my stove to the propane tank... couldn't make coffee at my campsite 😠😞
@@SpyderWayne I can't think of a much worse situation than that... I've thought and thought and thought and really there's not much that tops no coffee in the morning...😂😂😂
@Purple On Three Well, there was coffee, but I had to get dressed and ride 5 miles to McDonald's each morning 😊
@@SpyderWayne well...yeah... Sort of like when we stayed in Holbrook Arizona at those smelly wigwams and I had to walk half a mile for a cup of gas station coffee ☕😂
Enjoy your week riding and be safe!
I will... and ditto !!! ✌️😎👍
@@SpyderWayne thank you!
That stove is so tiny! I can't even believe it's a stove!! How cool is that!?
I wonder how many camp stoves made today will still be working 50 years from now 🤔😉
@@SpyderWayne ZERO is my guess since everything is practically disposable these days
Lover your shirt and hat! 🤗🤗💜💜
Both are from special folks 🤗
@@SpyderWayne 💜🤗
You aren’t old enough to have been around 51 years ago, ?????
Cool stuff
I was born in the 50s .. (just)...
🤔😳🤣🤣
Allegedly most things from the 60’ are top performers ! Just saying 😂
Haha... and I'm from the 50s 😳🤣
@@SpyderWayne Well …. I guess I may have to make an exception to the rule !
still use my optimus 22 (its a dual burner stove, like two 111s put together) Rather big in comparison to 8R but i just cant stand non pressurized stoves - i had one and it was real hassle to get going.
Yeah, this litrle 8R is a bit of a hassle to light. Back in my early teens when we were backpacking, this was considered 'big', carrying the small sterno cans was more popular, but this suited my needs back then and gave me hot meals. I was amazed that it still worked after all these years 😁👍
So will that reappear as an integral part of the Spyder camping gear?
Not an integral part, but an additional non necessay piece of gear, a backup for cooking. Last year at VAMM22, I arrived and setup camp and couldn't cook anything because I had left the propane hose at home attached to my buddy heater that I didn't need to carry with me in July. I needed that hose to attach to my 5 lb propane tank. With this long forgotten tiny camp stove added to my arsenal, I will now have a backup method to cook a camping meal if my primary stove fails to work for any reason 😁👍
Remember captain bob the painter?! 🙂
I have never heard of captain bob 🤔... so I looked it up on google... 😄🤣
@@SpyderWayne did you find him? Only a short clip on UA-cam. You remind me of him, I don’t know if it’s the beard or voice. The guy was a legend! Great speaking and teaching voice. Some people got it and some didn’t, you sir have it! Thanks for posting
@fairwind8222 Haha, yes some videos of his came up, as soon as I started one video, I knew exactly what you meant 😁👍 and, thank you, you made my day !!
Any prize for being the 10th ? 😅
Well, I suppose so Eddie. Since it's Wednesday, you get a trunk full "Happy Humpdays"
