Best regards from Germany. May this Island find peace for ever. I have been to Jersey in the 90's as a kid. We were staying at a very nice local familys' house with kids at my age. Must have been 12 or 13 and speaking the best English in my family. We played football, tennis and I learned the cricket rules. My grandfather was 16 when he was forced into the wehrmacht. Wounded an traumatized as a POW. He was beaten up many times by British guards. Never hated the British and made a visit to London in his 70s. It makes me keep my faith in humanism to see people forgive and make their peace. Thanks Canal Island people.

Remember going to Alderney when I was 12 with the Sea Cadets some 43yrs ago I always remember the German tower on the cliff top to the left as you enter the harbour... Would loved to visit that place again one day!
I'm glad Mark found all this! I'd like to see more about what was found! Hope that maybe these people can make it a National Museum, for tourism to come in! I can see Hoptels, small hotels, motels, resturants to feed the tourists set up and a way to make a living on the islands, besides the normal way of the islanders.
slight correction: guernsey and its surrounding islands in the bailiwick of guernsey were not the only place te be taken by the Germans. It also happened to jersey, The bigger channel island which is just a bit closer to France. 44:45 - that is not guernsey, thats Elizabeth castle in Jersey. Never mind I'm dumb haha
Nice! I thing that interests me about New Zealand is the Hacca, in rugby. I don't really like the Hacca, but I read about the history of it and I found it quite interesting. I don't think New Zealand ever really gets mentioned but I think if someone did do research on it I think it would be quite interesting. I think that's what I don't like, you learn lots about Britain and the history, but you never learn about commonwealth countries, or other countries in general. I think it's a shame.
Amazing to know about this, I just been playing the Sniper Elite 5 France game which had a mission based on the Isle and I knew nothing about what happened on the Isle and during its occupation and the end of the war.
ironically, the Channel Islands remained occupied until after the war. a successful Kriegsmarine raid was even conducted on a Normandy costal installation in 1945 from the islands.
Really interesting documentary on our home. Odd to not see any real mention of the POV camps set up in the islands. Alderney was basically one large POV camp and no mention of all the slave labor used to build those fortifications. Glad they captured some of the social history here.
Plenty in Jersey also.. These fortifications it is said we're built by prisoners of war.. Russians, Poles, Slovaks amonst others.. It was also said many ended up as part of these fortifications...

Vic Saul we all know of the occupation, they do each is that. It’s just I’ve never heard of this documentary, and usually when a new doc is filmed on island it’s the talk of the island
jason longsden we have some controversy in the comments!
Great work,thanks
One of the most awesome ww2 history videos.
what about Opie and Anthony
interesting doc, not sure how i didnt find this earlier or if i did in fact watch it and forgot about it but what i like the most about it is it further humanizes the world war, dispelling propaganda and showing humans beings on both sides suffering at the hands of politicians
Fascinating video
Alderney also played host to concentration camps. It’s still controversial what happened there
Not just concentration camps. My family is from there and they tell shocking stories on their return
@@prechagirl I was wondering about that. Although not shocked it wasn't brought up.
What scares me is that people today could care less about the Camps; I am 73; a Vietnam veteran; and I still pray for the souls in those camps...
YouDontKnowMe - No, but I do know that you're a IDIOT Critical of that Vietnam Veteran.
Most likely a TROLL you are!
Nicely done.
Remember going to Alderney when I was 12 with the Sea Cadets some 43yrs ago I always remember the German tower on the cliff top to the left as you enter the harbour... Would loved to visit that place again one day!
There's a delightful series called Island at War about the occupation. And of course Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society ❤
What a fantastic post....well made!!
Thank you very much.
I'm glad Mark found all this! I'd like to see more about what was found! Hope that maybe these people can make it a National Museum, for tourism to come in! I can see Hoptels, small hotels, motels, resturants to feed the tourists set up and a way to make a living on the islands, besides the normal way of the islanders.
this comment reeks of enterprising victorian gentleman buying an island in order to ruin it making a resort
@@douglasparkinson4123 You mean the Barclay Brothers?
This was amazing
Great video
Is the story of Jamaica Inn (@23:00)?
slight correction: guernsey and its surrounding islands in the bailiwick of guernsey were not the only place te be taken by the Germans. It also happened to jersey, The bigger channel island which is just a bit closer to France.
44:45 - that is not guernsey, thats Elizabeth castle in Jersey. Never mind I'm dumb haha
Sorry Lucas, but your eyes are deceiving you. Unless Elizabeth Castle has gained a lighthouse and lost the Hermitage it is indeed Castle Cornet.😀
Fascinating.
Incredible video
The boat in the opening minutes is named “Te Aroha” which means “The Love” in New Zealand Maori 💚👌 Chur NZ
It's actually pronounced "Sahan Dihego" which means the vagina of a wale
@Ash you've never seen anchorman?
@Ash ah sorry!
Nz up!!!
hmm bit of a minor audio issue the volume level is wack and I had to manually adjust it repeatedly.
Love the history❤
Very strange that there is no mention of Jersey!!!
I live over here on Guernsey and hbh we just learn this in primary school
say hello to wroteshaw for me
@@harrytaylor6565 i ACC met him at the bathing pools once
"Treue ist das Mark der Ehre" means 'loyalty is the marrow of honour'. Marrow, not "mark".
No one talking bout that massive spider @ 30:30 🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️
