Scarlet Badis Care (dario dario)

- Scarlet Badis (dario dario) are a small but mighty micro predator. Their care can be difficult because of their prey drive for live foods and their difficulty to tell females from subdominant males. In this video I show you how to tell the females and males apart and how we care for our Scarlet Badis.

I am SO excited for you! What a comprehensive but understandable video about these great fish! You did an absolutely FANTASTIC job. Pointing details out - comparison shots etc. LOVE this! I cannot wait until you get your first fry :)
Thank you for your kind words! I'm excited too! I had to do a triple take when I saw our female. We got them when they were very young. Now that they are older it's so exciting to see her! Fingers crossed on the breeding!
@@HeatherNielsenScarletAquatics I came back to check in on you! Hope all is well - I bet you are super busy with the move and everything else you have going on. I revisited this because it looks like I will be getting a couple of these lovely little fish and I know how much you love them and how awesome this video is. I wanted a refresher on what to do for them. I have a great tank that I think they will like - once the stupid thing decides to finish cycling.....it is taking forever. Anyways, I look forward to when you are able to post once you catch up with everything. Take care and thanks again for videos like this!
OUTSTANDING - So glad I found this gem! One of my favorite fish so I was happy to share your video 👍
Nice Heather, you captured some beautiful footage.
Hi Joe! Thank you very much! It took some time. They are so small and active it's hard to film them.
I just got two for my nano tank! I love them so much
Hi, Heather! I’ve always wanted a s badis. Thank you for the care guide

Me too, they are so great. Thank you for watching!
Amazing video
Very cool! I don't have the time to raise the live foods to keep scarlet badis, but I can live vicariously through your video. :) Thanks for sharing!
One food that they love and is quick and easy is live Baby Brine Shrimp. It takes just a couple of minutes to do and they go crazy for them! Thank you for watching!
Wow what an awesome fish. Great job on the video!
Hi D, thank you very much!
They are beautiful fish.. love the colours
Yes, there so colorful. Even some of the sub dominant males are just stunning! Thank you for watching!
Great information!
Thank you very much for watching!
Great video. Thanks for info
Thank you for watching!
Have not seen these in any of our pet shops in South Africa. Great looking fish. Excellent video. 😀👍
Thank you very much! We don't have them here locally either. I had to find them online and have them shipped.
Awesome video! I recently set up a scarlet badis tank to add to my collection. Hoping to breed some and eventually film my own video on them to add to my channel. Thanks for the informative video, seems to match perfect to the research I’ve been doing.
Thank you very much! That is awesome that you have a tank set up for them. I'm going to keep an eye on your channel! :-)
I also wanted to say that I really enjoy your video style.
Thank you so much!
Beautiful little fish. this first time I ever really got a good look at them
Thank you very much for watching! They are beautiful for sure. I spend a lot of time in front of their tank.
Cutest little Predator !!
Planning on setting up a small scarlet badis tank, borderline a nano tank. Have yet to decide. I can't wait to try these little guys out. I'm a betta mom (:
Pretty fish. Big thumbs up.👍😃
Hey Protim, thank you for stopping by and watching!
Interesting video, very nice.
Thank you very much for stopping by and watching!
Loved this video. I think your right I think I do have a female. And so far so good they look to be carving out their territories and hunting for stuff. Staying close to the rocks and plants.
Hi! That is great that yours are doing good. They are such an amazing fish!
Such cool fish I have to get some now new Sub here thanks for sharing

Hi Deb! I love them, they are so amazing! Thank you for watching!
Awesome video the fish look awesome
Hi Liberty, thank you very much!
No problem it’s a cool fish
nice
So I have a 6 gallon tank and wondering if this is the right fish for me. My tank is naturally planted but it only has plants that are carpet plants. There is a hidey hole under the gravel and many rocks and a driftwood in there as well. I was thinking either this fish or the clown Killifish. What are your thoughts?
Thanks for the help!
I just received as a gift from a friend three Scarlet Badis, but he did not tell me that they only like live food. I have them in a 10 gallon tank with six Chili Rasbora. I have only had them two days and live in a remote area where live food is not an option. Any ideas on how to care for them or get them to eat flake food?
I was about to buy a pair of these today from my lfs but I couldn't as they had just arrived so hopefully by this Saturday I'll have a pair... I also like chilli rasboras
That is great. I know that you will love them! I like Chilli Rasboras too. They are on my list of future fish. Thank you for watching!
Such cute fish! Thanks for sharing! New sub here #fishfam
Hi! Thank you very much for watching and subbing! #fishfam!
IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO KEEP THEM WITH CICHLID FRIES(BLUE ZEBRA CICHLID) ??? PLEASE SUGGEST...
Do they need live food or are they ok with frozen food? Are they social or can you keep just one? How many gallons does it need? How hardy are they?
Great video, love these little guys! What would you consider the minimum tank size for a breeding pair to be? Also would a trio be better than a pair if you plan to remove the eggs to a fry tank?
Hi Jacey! For a breeding pair I would do a 10 gallon minimum. You could do a trio but I would increase the tank to a 20 gallon for that. For such a small fish the males claim a big territory. Thank you for watching!
do they attack each others fins? my males have their rear fin bitten off. 3 males i belive with gudgeon peacocks peaceful
Fed mine grindal worms. Out of this habit the rest of his tank mates adopted this diet, even my dwarf puffer. My scarlet badis died of old age, +2yrs and the dwarf puffer was moved not for bad behavior but because another tank had a snail infestation, she is reaching 2yrs herself now.
Can the females have red coloration but no banding?
My dominant scarlet badis tend to develop black patches over their bodes; do you know what might be causing this? At first I treated them for illness, but it didn't seem to be changing with treatment. The patches have been around for about 6 months, but otherwise the fish are active and healthy.
I have seen this in one of my females. I do not know what causes it but it doesn't seem to affect their quality of life.
hi! just got 2 of them and i really hope, i have a female. they have their own tank. pls can you do more videos of them? theres not much about these fish on the internet.
Hi Verena! Fingers crossed for you that you have a female! You are right that there isn't much info available about them. I will be doing more vids of them. Thank you very much for watching!
Cute little guys
Hiya Fishman, thank you for watching!
Hi, How many scarlet badis would you recommend for a 200l aquarium
It depends on what else it is stocked with. But, as long as there is plenty of hardscape so that they can all claim territory you could put as many as 8 - 10. We have had that many in our 55 gallon which is 208L.
I have 120 l tank and already in there two male as well as one female. I want to keep more . How many more I can add to my tank ?
can i keep tetras or other small fish like tetras with dario dario? my tank volume is 15 gallon.
I have mine with neons, puffers, guppies, black kulhi loaches, cories, otos and pygmy cories for three years now and they do fine. I have plants and caves so everyone has their own places and works out well.
I am hoping to get a couple of these little guys for my planted 10 gallon, though I have a question. Our water is pretty hard here, do you think that will be an issue?
They can handle hard water. The key to keeping them happy is stability.
@@HeatherNielsenScarletAquatics they showed up DOA. :-(
@@jeztersaquariums7626 Oh no, It's always sad when that happens, I'm sorry that happened to you.
@@HeatherNielsenScarletAquatics just sad they died
Hi Heather.. very good video... Can we put shrimps and guppies along with this red and blue badis... Please do reply ... 🥰
Hi John, thank you for watching! You can put them in with shrimp. But, the Scarlet Badis have a high prey drive and will hunt baby shrimp. Also, Guppies can work but you might find the Scsrlet Badis hiding more. Also, if they breed, the Guppies will eat the Scarlet Badis eggs.
@@HeatherNielsenScarletAquatics thanks for the reply... It's very useful...
The temperature for these fishes can easily get to 35 degree Celsius cuz here in their natural habitat in India it easily gets hottttt in summers. Am gonna catch a 100s this year lol
Love Em'
In my experience I disagree with them being not shy and always in the front of the tank. The slightest light from my television or sight of me and mine darts for cover. Super hard to ever truly see him out and about unless I'm watching from a distance. Tank has tons of cover and plants as well so that makes it even harder lol
I wonder if there are tank mates making them feel unsafe? I have had them for years and never see them hide.
Just being kept with cpds atm
I agree. There is a misconception about the Galaxy Rasbora being shy. I have five and plan to breed more. Mine don't hide when I approach the glass. They feed from the surface when info say they don't. These fish must feel safe and comfortable. Everyday I tap the glass before feeding and they know that signal now. For the fish you mention in this video its hard to get hold of females.
Do these breed well? And can I put these in a shrimp tank?
You can keep them with shrimp but they will most likely eat the shrimplets. We don't have any babies yet because we have not been removing the parents but there is a lot of breeding activity.
This is next on my new species tank! The tanks just keep adding up 😩
Hi! You will love them, they are so much fun! I understand about the tanks adding up but it's so hard to stop adding them! LOL
I am looking for female Badis please help
Did you ever get fry? I want to breed them so bad.
We haven't gotten any fry yet because we don't take the parents out of the tank in between breeding.
Do you have a pair to sell I need a female but can't find any in the area
Hi George! I don't have any for sale, unfortunately. I'm looking for females also right now. Thank you for watching!
I want them so bad but I can't feed live foods all the time
Cutest little Predator.. !! I got mind to eat frozen blood worms 😅 I feed mosquito lave collect from my still water.. I do keep still water just for mosquito lave
Am most like betta breeding
Hey Big, thanks for stopping by and watching! Hopefully I can get some footage of them breeding someday.
You be good if you can see if breed soon
We live to breed
Have fish must breed
Oh not I wanted two pair , and they gave me 3 male and 1 female 😒
