  • I heard that the Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is coming out this fall on Amazon and it will feature hobbits! I finally poured the foundation for my kid's Hobbit Hole or Hobbit House (whatever you prefer to call it) and thought this would be a good episode to label "Part 1". I hope you enjoy the video and the build. Thanks! Music is by Loving Caliber and Ten Towers.

    Cannot wait for the next video. I hope that you can actually put everything in a playlist or actually make like a hour and a half long video or something putting all of the extra information or the extra clips that you haven't put in yet with the other clips they seem so short but of course that is expected showing us your steps I think you're doing a great job so far and you are helping me come up with great ideas and helping me figure out some of the things that I was stumped on I love that retaining wall and I will definitely be making a serious on my UA-cam channel once I get the material stored up to get something started it's not going to be on this UA-cam channel on my UA-cam channel that I'm commenting from now but look for it the magical forest I haven't done anything yet but hopefully within the next year or so it will be started and I will definitely give you a shout out and anybody else a shout out for any tips and tricks and ideas that I get from. You won't see any of the concrete when it's finished:-) Unfortunately, there are a lot of builders on youtube that have given people the misleading, and in my opinion, dishonest, impression that you can just dig a hole in the ground and then fill that hole with green timber, rock and clay mortar to make a hobbit hole or "survival" shelter. They make their UA-cam video, post it, and then abandon what they have built. The reality is that any structure that is built underground in that way will become a wet, molding, and dangerous mess after the first rainy season. I am not building something just to make a youtube video only to then abandon what I've made. I'm building something that will last:-)

      @@Odd-LotsGood points. Your the builder, and your aloud to build it as you would see fit, nothing wrong with that. If it is me, a modern way is to pipe it with PVC pipe to allow for air flow. Dirt floor for sure. I would just follow the 18th century building model. Roy Underhills work as a master Housewright in Williamsburg Virginia in the late 70s is how I like to build. It works for me. I enjoy period building techniques. To each his own. But look, you did a fantastic job on this build and generous enough to share it with us. I appreciate your experience and candor. I wish you well on your next build. 😊

      concrete is not modern. Romans made & used it, it's ancient! "600 BC - Rome: Although the Ancient Romans weren't the first to create concrete, they were the first to utilize this material widespread. By 200 BC, the Romans successfully implemented the use of concrete in the majority of their construction. They used a mixture of volcanic ash, lime, and seawater to form the mix."

    We modern humans are so used to living in square homes...almost every 'hobbit' house i see anyone build is a square room or rooms with a Bag End round door façade.
    Try looking at the films and re-creating Bag End, especially if you have the space. Use a backhoe to cut back into the hillside, dig out a huge long terrace, build a wall downhill and fill in behind it what you remove from the cut, then draft out rounded rooms and halls, plastic sheeting for waterproofing, earth-filled tires or earthbag walls for cheap construction, plenty of small windows for cross-ventiation and light, even uphill window-wells, or an uphill patio to get more light in. Cob walls to cover the tires or earthbags, lots of salvaged wood paneling, 'junk' damaged plywood bought at the local hardware store, salvaged pallet wood, end cuts from the local sawmill, etc. Round off all interior corners, basically just copy what you see of Bag End in the films.
    I'm building a 24' yurt to live in this fall and all winter, in central Illinois. Rocket mass heater for heat, cheap drainpipe and pex tubing laid in trenches for geothermal air-conditioning for summer.
    But every time i see someone build a square fake hobbit house, it makes me want to start stacking tires and do my own build.

    To make the slurry, mix 2 parts moss, 2 parts water, and one part buttermilk in a blender. Blend thoroughly and then spread the mixture over the area where you would like the moss to grow. Keep misted with water (never let it dry out completely) until the moss has established itself.

That being said, it's clear as far as I can tell, that your knowledge has grown and this project looks like its off to a strong start. Keep em' coming man, you'll have a TON of subs, I'd know, I'm now one of them, and I'm hoping to follow this journey along the way. Have fun with it, best of luck along the way, and God Bless.

    This is really cool! What’s the purpose of the two elevated islands (or conversely, the deep trenches) as opposed to an entirely level surface?

    • @Odd-Lots
      @Odd-Lots  Рік тому

      Thanks!
      The trench around the outside is to support the weight of the block walls and the concrete roof. The trench down the middle was going to support an interior load-bearing wall. After I dug the middle trench, however, I decided to eliminate that interior wall. It was easier to fill the middle trench back in by pumping concrete down the hill than by barrowing gravel down to it.

      I've been in the building trades for about 20 years but have never been on a project that uses those or anything like them so unfortunately I don't have any real world experience to advice you with...a few downsides I see to them though are; there seems to be limited design customization options available, you'll need lots of people or a crane to set them in place and the facades of the buildings are all really similar due to the limits inherent in the prefab structure...In retrospect, due to how difficult my location is to get material to, I would have used ICF forms and pumped concrete into the forest www.strongholdicf.com/icf-products/
      If your future building location is easily accessible, I think block offers the best mix of design options, durability and budget friendly value...but it is slow and tedious if you're not an experienced mason, which I am not:-)

    Why put down the plastic when you grow up ground back on it still mixes with the concrete right?

    • @Odd-Lots
      @Odd-Lots  9 місяців тому

      The plastic is a vapor barrier. It helps keep the moisture in the ground from leaching up into the concrete slab. The sand I put on top of the plastic is to protect it from being punctured while laying the rebar and pouring the concrete.

    • @Odd-Lots

      It's a vapor barrier. Concrete is porous. 10 mil plastic helps prevent water from wicking up through the slab after it cures.
