There is one more meaning to noticing "the color purple". Beatings result in noticeable bruises. The line "I think it pisses off God when people don't notice the color purple". When you see suffering and let it pass without stepping forward to make a difference then those people are part of the problem.
Notice beauty but also notice suffering.

The Color Purple to the author, Alice Walker, was about Celie becoming independent. It’s her favorite color but it symbolizes a kind of transformation into freedom, maturity and strength. When Albert is in the field of purple flowers at the end it is him recognizing and accepting Celie’s independence.

  • @frederickseltzerjr2170
    @frederickseltzerjr2170 9 днів тому +79

Danny Glover admitted he took on the role of Albert because he wanted to take on the challenge to play a character he knew was not going to be well received. But to show how different he is in real life versus the character he was playing, in the scene where he's trying to pry Nettie away from Celie to throw her off his land, Spielberg advised all three of the actors to hold nothing back. In between takes, Danny would make sure that both Deserta Jackson (young Celie) & Akousa Busia (Nettie) was ok and not hurt or scared.
It also not only the debut of the woman who convinced me when I was a young child growing up in Baltimore to become a journalist, with Oprah Winfrey, it was also the movie debut of Whoopi Goldberg.
Due to multiple medical issues in my life, I've lived by the song "God Is Trying To Tell You Something" the past decade and that final scene of the reunion of Celie, Nettie and Celie's children still makes me cry hard today.

Love you guys for doing this reaction!
Here is my take on “The Color Purple.” It represents black women and what they have endured throughout time. When Shug said “doesn’t it piss God off when people walk past the color purple and don’t noticed it” she meant that people often overlook women, especially black women. Women are groomed, molested, abused, beat and all of it has gone unnoticed and ignored for generations. Purple is a regal color and women are regal and beautiful but yet, we are often at the bottom of the totem pole, historically speaking. Women just want to be loved. Nettie and Shug were the only people who noticed/recognized and loved Celie. As the main character Celie embodies the color purple, and in the end she just needed to be noticed and loved.
Danny Glover played the hell out of this role. To go a little deep with this.. after slavery ended a lot of black men only found themselves to be powerful and in control when they were at home. That’s why a lot of men are abusive, bc of insecurity, and wanting to have power over something. Black men in the outside world were lynched, beaten and disregarded by white men and when they would come home, they would take it out on their wives. That is a big reason why black folks today have a lot of generational trauma when it comes to family values/standards. Albert’s story is the story of thousands of our male ancestors. Albert’s dad probably beat his wife, then Albert does the same thing and then Harpo. You could tell that the first time Albert hits Celie, he was not used to doing that. But he fell in love with how much power he could have over her when is own life was not going well and Shug didn’t love him. Celie was already groomed so Albert capitalized on that when in reality he was probably not that evil, but his father didn’t raise him right. Shug knew Albert wasn’t a real man, that’s why she couldn’t be with him.

This is one of my favorite movies. In the book, Mister & Shug were a couple who had kids out of wedlock. He wanted to marry her but his father forbade him (which is why Shug called him weak). Shug’s parents took her kids from her to raise & shunned her from the church. That young girl singing Gods Tryna Tell You Something was her daughter. (Celie didn’t know Mister’s name until she heard Shug say it. They had been married for years by then.)

I don't care if you are a tough as nails, grown arse man, you will well up at the very least when watching this movie (if you can relate to a difficult life, that is. If not, the drama of it will not hit you the same way).

Thanks to Cameron and Isaiah! 💜 I love this one... and was privileged to write a review for it in my high school newspaper. 🔸 The new one was good, but it was a full musical, so they're kind of like apples and oranges. Overall, it wasn't as epically directed, but it had epically styled/choreographed moments. Totally worth watching!!!

Great reaction and analysis. It now seems for a lot of us who had seen this movie before, for some of us multiple times; you guys have became our "colour purple". Because that wasn't an insight I had seen before now. Thank you.

You could even say no one saw themselves as the color purple. Except for Sophia and that was stepped away from her because she did love herself.

One of the saddest things about this film is the fact that at the time it came out, the Academy was still very biased, and the movie got seriously snubbed at the Oscars that year. It got over eleven nominations but did not win any Oscars. Now you tell me, young brothers, after what you just watched, do you think this movie didn't deserve some Oscar wins? Everyone was shocked that it didn't win anything that year. Epic, big budget Hollywood movies with all black cast members wasn't really done back then, especially by Caucasian directors, and the then very racist Academy board members purposefully snubbed Spielberg and this film. It was messed up.

Celie told Harpo to beat Sophia because abuse was all Celie had ever known. She had no other life to compare it to. When someone lives with that for such a long time, it becomes normal.

  • @lecuyerdooley1084

    A few points:
Celie told Harpo to beat Sophia because that was all she knew. Men ruled over women. She saw that with her parents, and she saw it with Mister and all around her.
Celie wanted to stay in the juke joint to watch the fighting because she had no grownup entertainment. She was relegated to Mister's house and taking care of it and his children.
Shug and Albert were young lovers who had children together. Albert was too afraid to marry Shug and go against his father so Shug left her kids with her parents and took off to sing and enjoy her life. That's why Shug cries when she is in the bathtub and asks Celie about her Pa and says her (Shug's) father still loves her, he just can't acknowledge it because Shug was living a sinful life.

I don't blame you. I don't think Celie realize it herself. She had no frame of reference when it comes to romantic love, and in her time the word "gay" still mean happy and amusing.

You guys don’t seem to understand that the only reason Celie told Harpo to beat Sofia was because that’s ALL she knew and experienced in life! It’s pretty obvious and clear.
Also, the ONLY thing black people had experienced and knew in this country was violence and being beaten as slaves. I don’t get how you guys can’t understand or see the connection.
These people, including the men and Danny Glover’s character, are ALL victims of what they’ve had to endure and witness, and they ALL have very little opportunity and ability to go places too because the world is not safe for any of them really.
Black women were ESPECIALLY victims of black and white men and white women.

I have seen many reactors older than you that didn’t even pick up on the messaging as you do. Very impressive and thoughtful reaction of this classic film. Now the author said the color purple is about Ceilie becoming independent. But while she doesn’t say it, when writing, you tend to mirror your other characters to your main- so your main point is still very valid and true. Yall even brought up stuff i haven’t even considered and I saw this when it came out lol
This was actually the first movie I ever saw in theaters. Such an amazing experience.
Oh and since you just did the original movie, just know this movie is from a book which was developed into a broadway play. Last year, the broadway play musical version was released - you guys should watch it close to having watched the OG. It hits the same beats but allows the songs to transition though the more graphic parts of the original. Its like watching all the characters aubconscious mind - its really good!

in her the letter Nettie says that celie’s children are brought up in love.
in the book Oliver Twist says that Oliver was brought up by hand.
    kind of an odd juxtaposition

Throughout the years, I’ve watched “The Color Purple” about 100 times. In the Black community, this movie is considered one of the greatest of all time. I never miss a reaction to this movie because it’s like seeing it again for the first time. I cry every time I watch it and not always in the same place.
That being said- your reaction and commentary afterwards was really wonderful (except for calling Sofia “Sophie” 😉). I thoroughly enjoyed your thoughtfulness. Thanks, guys!

My grandmother was born 3 years after the time this movie was set in. I can see the remnants of this time in her. I don’t ask her a lot of questions as I want her later years to be as happy as I can make them, but she definitely suffered. She has a little Celie, a little Shug, little Sophia, a little Nettie all rolled into one. She survived in spite of it all. Her greater joy is living to be a great grandmother. She’s so proud of us. And best believe her ‘Harpo’ or men like him in her life learned the hard way about putting hands on her. She stood, before she took some of that height) 6 feet tall. You were playing with your life to put hands on her. We STILL don’t eff with Nana. Her left hook is legendary, lol.
But this is not women’s suffrage, just fyi. This is an up close look at life for black women during that time. Women have it hard, black women have it harder, even now. This is why black women take no BS…our ancestors endured enough. My Nana passed along to my mother, to me, to my own daughter just what Sophia said…you will NOT beat me. You will treat me with respect or you will cease breathing.

You are exactly right Cam....cause the theme of the film is Shug's lines..."i think if you walk through a field, and don't notice the color purple it pisses God off!" (Paraphrased) and about we do so much trying just to be loved! MANY cases of people being the color purple in this film is correct...especially Shug...this film is cinematic GOLD...this is why it is a classic! Oprah got her production company name from Harpo in this film.
