In the book, Mister & Shug were a couple who had kids out of wedlock. He wanted to marry her but his father forbade him (which is why Shug called him weak). Shug’s parents took her kids from her to raise & shunned her from the church. That young girl singing Gods Tryna Tell You Something was her daughter.

I knew the girl in the church was Shug's daughter, but she's also Misters, too?

    • @TrueLibraGirl
      @TrueLibraGirl Місяць тому +4

@@obdiane yup, in the book all 3 of her kids were his. That’s why when Old Mister said, “Shug Avery set the population of Hartwell county to a new high. All of her children got different daddies”, Albert said “All Shug kids got the same daddy. I can vouch for that.” Then old Mr. said, “You can vouch for nothing. You was just one of the roosters, boy.”

@@TrueLibraGirl Wow.. I also wondered about the "vouch" statement. The movie was all over the place with the children's situation, books always give the best clarity. Thank you.

@@obdiane yeah books always give more details. It gave more insight into Celie & Shug, too. Definitely a good read!

Thanks for reacting but crazy fact is the story is actually true..The author of the book(Alice Walker)has stated that this story is of her grandmother or her great grandmother’s life..💐🙏🏾

I love when you said it was one of those movies you think you should watch and you included Schindler’s list. I went to the theater alone to watch that and only saw it that one time.

One controversy was a black movie directed by a non black director but he did an excellent job. Great job!! Also this was a breakout movie for Oprah.

Lovely movie, great reaction. There were at least two major controversies - the first you identified, the representation of the men. Many felt it furthered prejudices about African-American men (the "breakdown of the Black family" was a hot political topic in the 1980s). The second was the underplaying of the relationship between Celie & Shug. The relationship is more explicitly sexual in the book, but Spielberg just left it at a small hint of it in the movie. "Miss Celie's Blues", sung by Shug, was adopted as an unofficial anthem in African-American lesbian communities (might still be).

I feel like the controversy about the men ignored the decent men in the movie. Granted, they were mostly background characters because the movie was about the women and the men that hurt them, but they existed. You also have to wonder if mister or harpo were simply carrying out the same abusive behavior their dads taught them. Hell, even Celie subscribed to it until she realized that she had options.
There’s a lot of worthwhile conversation that can had to pick apart the causes, effects, and patterns that lead to the victim-abuser feedback loop.

It's a heavy emotional movie, but it makes think and feel. More empathy...and looking at your own self and what you're bringing to your life and others..

Harpo’s friend Swain is played by Laurence Fishburne
Squeak is played by Rae Dawn Chong , daughter of Tommy Chong
Shug actual shows Cellie what real love is suppose to feel like.
Mister’s mailbox is a character unto itself. It’s like a portal to Nettie

The controversy was this wonderful movie was shunned and didn't win a single Oscar nor Best Picture when it clearly was. The movie Out of Africa won and it was a horrible movie. No one got the recognition they deserved for their performance in this movie

That part always angered me but the color purple is regarded as a classic and still talked about many years later where as nobody speaks about the other movie.

The controversy among book readers was the same as all movie adapted books...not fitting an entire book n 2hrs🙄 The controversy in the white community was giving Black ppl such a 'grand' platform via Hollywoods fav son Spielberg. Black ppl who still felt the need for white validation were insulted as per usual by the award community snubb. The rest of us made it the #1 funny quoted movie n history to date💯👊🏾I was 8 whn it came out. My mother & her friend read the books & took me w thm to the theater. (My mom took me to c worse than ths 😂) As we left she asked if I understood it? Her asking let me kno it was important so I thought b4 I answered. I said yes & gav a summary. I asked if gramma had to live like that & she said some of it. I had watched it inserting my gramma everywhere. She wasn't taken by our govt, her mother sent her north (non jim crow) as a teen to b raised by her aunt bc she was her darkest child. Her aunt was dark too. It was a little safer up north. Its interesting that u identify as 1st Nation & ur dad is frm here. Here u can only be recognized as 1st Nation if u & ur fam r indigenous. I hope our ppl can access DNA more as a tool to reunite and discover 🙏🏾 Thanx for the info💜I've been trying to figure a way to relocate to South Island, NZ.
