The first half is played in C major Ionian and the second half is D Dorian. He's showing that to do this you don't need to change the position of the scale patterns. Basically, whatever position you play the mode patterns in, you can play all 7 modes. The way to change between the modes is by changing the chords being played alongside them. For example, in the position he was playing the patterns, you could also play E Phrygian, F Lydian, G Mixolydian, A Aeolian and B Locrian. He was also saying you'd probably want to target the root note for the key you're in e.g. C and D in his examples.
