Interesting. Never seen a pin do that before but on our 2017 Santa Fe with the same 3.3 the 4 star bolts on that same VVT sprocket backed out stopping the cam from turning. During the process of backing out the bolts Scraped the head enough to crate enough metal shavings to contaminate the oil. So now I'm doing a bunch of oil changes in hopes it didn't ruin the engine.
I am going through this same thing on my daughters Kia Sorento. same code p0018. already replaced censors and now kia is telling me 9k for a new engine. thank you for the info. we are going to look into the camshaft first. i did want to ask you if you ever got this car going.
I did get the car going and it seemed fine. About two months later the high pressure fuel pump caused the same problem with the timing. Probably the original failure was caused by that high pressure pump I believe
@@tocoframing2745Have you replaced the high pressure fuel pump? If so, what did you have to do / redo with the timing components? Father in law gave my wife his 2013 Azera and I'm in charge of the fun part haha... Timing job done last year by a shop after he was getting P0018. Shop reported still sludgy after lots of cleaner and multiple oil changes. No P0018 now, but got related codes P0014 and P0024. I'm thinking to try cleaning VVT solenoids, maybe Liqui Moly flush, and new oil & filter, but wondering about that high pressure fuel pump too. It's an expensive part....
I have no code popping up, just a hard constant rattle that makes me believe my tensioner has also failed. Did replacing that tensioner solve the rattle outside of your camshaft issue? Did you have a loud rattle or faint? Thx!
My rattle was only on start up. Then, I think, the oil pressure pushed the plunger in the tensioner and the chain rattle stopped. Maybe a defective tensioner can’t tighten the chain, an oil channel is clogged or the chain is too stretched? This is beyond my knowledge but a constant rattle sounds pretty bad
Thx, I think that’s exactly what’s happening. My suspicion at this point is that it’s the tensioner has failed, and/or the timing chain has stretched. I’m having the timing chain cover cracked open in a few weeks. This vehicle has had impeccable service up to this issue, 145,000 miles.

Wow I guess the bolts weren’t properly torqued during assembly. I hope you saved the engine.

@@tocoframing2745 this is good to know. We will look into this as well. I tried to tell them to buy American 🇺🇸 this time lol.
