    These are the reels I use for light slow jigging. Although I mention a couple of brands in this video, you can use this video as a guide to see which brands fit you most. Shallow water slow jigging is growing as a very effective method around the world and although there are some manufacturers catering to this category, its growth has been concentrated in specialist pockets around the world. It will only be a matter of time before it goes mainstream.
    Use this as a guide when selecting reels you may need in your area as I fish in different depths and use different conditions you may be facing in your area.
    The reels you should be choosing for this type of work depends on firstly, if you want a round or a low profile reel - if you choose a low profile reel, there are lots of options that have metal frames and composite side plates that make things a bit more cost effective - provided you get a reel that has the right ratio for the depth you are fishing most. Going with this option, you can buy two reels instead of just one, compared to what I normally use as my main reels.

      Hi Jesus, not all of them can be used...there are some that are built tougher than others...the best bet for jigging is to go with an all metal reel.

      We do the same 10lb fishing 13m of water catching large Australian snapper. Where i am out bottom is flat and not reefy so a fish can run +200m and find nothing to bust you off on. The only real obstacles are channel markers, yours and others boats/ anchor lines. So 10lb is plenty and loads of fun to hear them scream off 👍.
      We do have some areas where there is reefy bottom, its a different type of fishing and you fish heavy gear.

    A couple of questions/comment's. I love your informative video's. Isn't pe 0.8, 8 strand typically around 23lbs? And 2ndly, do you ever find it useful to use say up to pe 1.2 or app. 30lb braid on those size reels in situations where you're slow jigging near bottom in 150' or less and targeting red snapper, grouper or AJ's near bottom? I've been doing this, and would appreciate your thoughts. I'm questioning if I'm making a mistake and possibly missing potential bites.

    • @TheFishingKit
      @TheFishingKit  Рік тому +2

      Isn't pe 0.8, 8 strand typically around 23lbs? - not really. Japanese Spec 0.8 breaks at 16 lb or so.. PE (Actualy measurement is in Gou# )is a diameter measurement, and the breaking strain listed is taken with an average measurement - so it could break as low as 12 and as high as 18. American braid is thick and always underrated. There is a video in the IGFA channel where they test "15" LB line and it broke at 30+lbs consistently, the only way to make braid stronger is to put more material on it.
      Line diameter is very important for slow jigging because the more surface area you present to the flow, the more the line bows, the more the jig kites - with a bow on your line, the less sensitive your system will be. The immediate solution for you guys there is to use a heavy jig, which isn't really the solution - it's actually to change your line to a thinner diameter line - If you go with the rule "1g/foot". It means at 150 feet, you are forced to use 150g, in reality, if you go by the japanese standard of 1g/meter (provided you have the right PE line, say proper PE 0.8) you can do the job with a 45/50g jig, and it will reach the bottom, stay vertical and be very sensitive. Slow jigging is a Finesse Technique, it's supposed to be used when fish activity is low - this follows the age old tradition of going lighter when the fishing is tougher, and it wasn't invented to replace fast jigging.
      So, no, It's not really correct if I say you can use "30lb american braid" because you can't really quantify 30lb into a diameter, but I can say the OJ 1500 can hold 500m of PE 2 - it's that easy, because that's what it says on the box.
      The pound test system kind of doesn't make sense. It's like saying a box can hold 30lb, but it doesn't give you the dimensions of the box, so you don't know how much stuff you can fit in it.
      I will have a video on reels for targeting bigger fish in shallower depths soon.

      @@TheFishingKit I have a follow up comment after giving this some further thought if your gracious and indepth response. Let's use Power Pro braid as an example. 20# PP is 0.23mm in dia. PE2 is 0.235. Or virtually the same dia. As 20# PP. I also think it's acceptable to assume most PE lines breaking strength correspondes with its PE number. PE2 = 20# breaking strength, PE3 = 30# and so forth. So in reality, isn't PE line, very much the same as US braid? As far as how much line any given reel will hold, that's very easy in the US as well. Every reel holding capacity is available in feet/yards just as every line length is available on the box. My point is, isn't PE vs US braid just a difference in how US vs Japan lists the specifications of the line / manufacturers info while they're all equal with just different methods of attaining the exact same information and ultimately the exact same line? PE vs US braid.... They're all the same.

      @@RH-qk5lt If you can do a search on the IGFA's text on power pro 15lb, you will find a very interesting video. Power Pro's labeling is actually wrong. the diameter is wrong, so with the strength. 15lb breaks at more than double. While Japanese lines are rated as the average breaking strain of that particular diameter. US spec lines are thicker - it could be made in Japan, but IF it is specced for the US, it would be thick. I know this is very have for some people there to get their heads around, but unless you actually try some out amzn.to/3UrVpYf you won't know yourself.

      @TheFishingKit  Рік тому

      @@kizzjd9578I think their measurements are off. This braid is not sold in Japan, so something is off. might be the diameter, or it might be something else. PE (guo) is a measure of diameter, so this is what the Japanese market emphasizes on, and the only way to make braid stronger is to put more material, might be that this braid is thicker than indicated in the box (powerpro is known for this practice...not far from another shimano company to do the same). The Grappler series is not designed for the Japanese market...so I think this is part of the reason why its not in the Japanese Standard.
