    I was among the skeptics back then who couldn't imagine Floyd without Waters, and then I heard Signs of Life, On the Turning Away, Terminal Frost and Sorrow, and then saw them live.
    Now I see Waters for what he is: a cantankerous old coot who screams at kids to get off his lawn.

    Yet Another Movie and Sorrow are two of my favorite Pink Floyd songs ever and the 2019 remix is awesome making A Momentary Lapse of Reason one of the best PF albums ever.

    IMO it's not fair or correct to completely dismiss AMLOR. Like most every album it has its high and low points.
    Signs of Life, Learning to Fly, on The Turning Away and Sorrow are all exceptional. And even if they don't quite *sound* like The Wall or Animals, what's wrong with that? Would any PF fan say Saucerful of Secrets sounds like The Final Cut? Yet, this album always gets singled out for not sounding Floydian or as though it should have been a Gilmour solo effort.
    Completely unfair and inaccurate IMO.
    While it isn't the best PF album of all time it's not the monstrousity that some make it out to be.

      @@classicalbum You said you liked the remix, not necessarily the album.
      How terribly unfair! AMLOR is a great album!
      Why won't you redirect your harsh criticism to The final cut, a genuine bore, carved on vinyl by Waters almost alone, not worth the trouble, theirs or ours. The other members' contributions are minimal, and noboby who is a PF lover will even bother to play it.
      AMLOR isn't a concept LP, almost a concept LP but not quite, and PF did not always issue concept albums. THey were always keen on coherent albums that fascinate us from beginning to end, and despised singles which are all about business and not Music as the art.
      As for the remix I'll take your word for it, I look forward to owning and listening and enjoying the new 2019 remix.
      You also contradict yourself every minute, you do not like the album AMLOR yet you seem to enjoy Delicate sound of thunder, both CD and video, according to your other videos, which, surprise of all surprises, IS mostly AMLOR played live plus some tracks from The Wall and WYWH. I suspect you suffered from a momentary lapse of something...? How come???

  • @MrDirtybear
    @MrDirtybear 3 роки тому +14

    I often thought back in the day that from DSOTM onward Pink Floyd covered the five stages of grief; anger (Animals) bargaining (WYWH) denial (DSOTM) and depression (The Wall) and with 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason' I think that the Roger-less Pink Floyd discovered the last stage of grief; acceptance. Dave Nick and Rick certainly accepted each other more readily than Roger accepted anything at the time.

      I love both of those, with Momentary having more of a primal hold on me going back to my early teen years, and Division being a much more "objectively" masterful recording and tasteful mix, and more in line with Floyd's typical sound, for better or worse depending on one's ear I guess

      For me the appeal of this album (discovered when I was probably about 15) was always it's feeling of being a totally isolated, futuristic, depersonalized, existentially despairing, machine-like music, which both the technology of the time and the reality of Dave's isolated and uncertain period of recording it made possible. I always thought Dogs of War stunk, regardless of the mix haha, but everything else was and still is gold to me, and the sometimes inappropriately punching drum sounds, squealing "dentist" guitar, and expansive reverb almost to parody levels somehow all work together to give a feeling of, what felt to me at the time and still kind of does, like Sartre-in-sound. Which, was completely my headspace as a teenager, and I can still kind of fall back into. Also I am a total X Files fanboy and have been for like 25 years, and I get some of the same impressions of cosmic dread from both pieces of art

    The previous album, The Final Cut, is an absolutely God awful depressing Roger Waters dirge, played by Pink Floyd. This one, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, is a David Gilmour collection, of good songs and instrumentals, played by Pink Floyd. These two albums serve to demonstrate just how far apart Waters and Gilmour were, musically and in attitude to life in the early 1980’s. I have all PF albums (including TFC 🙄) and I must say I do quite like AMLOR.

    I hesitate to call this a "remix." I refer to it as a "re-imagining." Re-recording drum parts, and flying in Rick's keyboard parts from live shows (and Gilmour's vocals, for that matter) goes way beyond a remix.This presents a couple of problems for me:
    Every album is of the era in which it was recorded. I've heard people say that earlier works like Dark Side sound "timeless." Even then, bands used the best available techniques, and the Floyd were known for sonic "perfection." But when I listen to it, it sounds like it was recorded in the early 70's. That being said, my first musical loves were 80's new wave and pop. So the "pop sheen" on Momentary Lapse doesn't distract me from the songs.
    On the same note, some of the songs on the re-imagining suffer from the different drum sound and lack of big 80's reverb, in my opinion. Songs like Yet Another Movie and Terminal Frost were built around a big, reverby drum soundscape; when you take that away, it changes the whole dynamic of the song. Sure, the drums sound like you're in a cozy room with them on the remix, but it doesn't fit with everything else that's going on and pulls me out of the song.
    For me, this re-imaging is a curiosity, like the re-recording of Money on A Collection of Great Dance Songs. Is it fun to listen to occasionally? Sure. Will it replace the original for me? No.
    Thank you for your review! It's always interesting to hear other people's measured opinions.....

    I gave the revised tracks a try, and they're a hit-and-miss for me. The production on the tracks is very good, for the most part. And so are the keyboards. I didn't like the dry sound of the drums, though. Some of the mixing is an acquired taste as well. I like that they tried to make the album a more "timeless" effort but to be honest, I was a bit disappointed with the end result. It's not _awful,_ but I will have to stick with the original one, sorry to say. After all, I appreciate the LP for what it _was,_ not what it _could_ have been.

    I have just listened to this remix for the first time. As a fan of the 87 version despite all the cold reverb and gigantic gated snares; I found the remix an uncomfortable sonic portmanteau. I freely admit that 35 years of audiating the original and one listen of the remix is not an unbiased position for objective appraisal. In my heart however; I do prefer a version that represents the skills of Gilmour, Wright and Mason more fully, so I’m glad it exists and will keep listening.

    You have motivated me to give this mix a listen. The original has always been heavily criticised by myself and 90% of my peers as being a dull 80's "David Gilmour Band" mind you we are all born in the 90's, are musicians and loathe the mainstream production of the 1980s.
    I cannot think of a time where I've listened to the whole album without skipping a couple of tracks and very rarely have I even wanted to put it on despite Pink Floyd being one of my favourite bands. Perhaps it is worth adding to my agenda as I've been recently comparing King Crimson's recent remixes, sounds like I'd have a lot more to say about this album than those.

    My first Floyd album was "Wish You Were Here"...which didn't grab me, but I liked it enough to try again. I had remembered seeing "Learning To Fly" on MTV as a kid, and thought it was great. I never forgot about it. So I picked up this album next and thought it was pretty amazing. I would soon go on to discover better albums like "Dark Side...," "Meddle," and "Piper At the Gates..." and became hooked on Floyd. But probably wouldn't have had it not been for this album. It encouraged me to keep looking into Floyd's catalogue. This was back in the days of CDs, when I had to order most of my music over mail orders. Although I believe I found this album on cassette at K-Mart! Those were the days...
    I can see the criticisms now, but at the time I thought nothing of it. Every Floyd album has it's own character and personality, and this album is no exception. But I admit I probably like it more than it deserves. But "Momentary..." was my "first love" when it came to Floyd's catalogue.

    Barry, the remix/updated version pushed the album into my Top 10 All Time Favorite Pink Floyd albums. Nick playing all of the drums on the album except for Sorrow which still has the drum machine for some reason. Now Rick is on the whole album on keyboards and sounds more natural.
    The Animals Remix was a hatchet job with some tracks badly altered (Pigs and Sheep were altered for the worse and also Dogs was botched with the high synth notes coming in now a beat late rather than on the acoustic guitar chord changes).

    I have a lot of sentimental memories invested in AMLOR. I can remember the very day I ran to my local record store ( it was actually a little market stall) where I’d pre-ordered it. I remember running home with it in my jacket as it was so windy and hammering it down with rain. I also recall being a bit gutted as I’d creased the corner of the sleeve in my rush to get it home. I remember thinking it definitely had a newer more modern feel to it and that the lyrics seem to have a more personal and observational approach to them as opposed to Waters direct social commentary on subjects. It definitely felt at the time like it had more of a connection to Gilmour’s About Face ( which also suffers from the 80s production curse)than the Waters era Floyd. Still though, I think as a 16 year old, whose musical appetite was insatiable, I accepted that this was the 80s and all the 70s band had adopted the new production values. I ended up loving this album as much as all the other Floyd greats. I mean you could argue that it’s vastly superior to More, Atom Heart Mother and dare I say Ummagumma, all of which sit within various transitional periods of the bands history. The new remix definitely has a softer overall feel, but I’m not sure it resonates with me as much as I thought it would. Yikes, I actually think I prefer the original 80s mix in places .😮 my judgement may be slightly marred by my annoyance of having to change over my 45rpm half speed cut every 12 mins or so ( a pet hate of mine which takes away the enjoyment of being able to listen to a whole side of a record). Still , it’s the Floyd and I’m a sucker for any new ( or remixed ) versions of any of the bands back catalogue, so it’s always a joy to compare the significant differences. I’ll always go back to the original mix, which is not something I’d consider with Animals on acquiring its amazing remix. I’m guessing there’s a review of that on this channel. New to the channel and loving it. 🤟😎🙏

    Great review, I wondered if Gilmour was aware of Depeche Modes popularity at the time and hence the production on the original album? Maybe an attempt to update Floyd and make it appeal to an 80's audience perhaps, who knows. I actually like Depeche Mode although I agree on the 80's sound. I think you either love it or you you dont. I think Gilmour and Co were back to their best on the Division Bell, High Hope's especially ranks highly in their huge list of great tracks

The follow up The Division Bell is the better album though as it's more consistent , with much more involvement from Richard Wright and Nick Mason.

    I really like this album! Never been bothered with the sound. I like everything about the 80's production. And I dont get all this talk about sound nearly without emphasis on the songs itself! I have heard this too many times! Listen to the melodies! The melody comes first! "On the turning away" is the best track on the album! - And I do like reverb very much! It lifts the music to a higher level! Ok- That was my honest opinion!

    Good fair review. You skipped One Slip, which I personally believe benefited the most from the remix. It is now for me a truly enjoyable song to listen to. I also think the new version of Terminal Frost is vastly improved mainly by Nick's drumming. I do also agree that Yet Another Movie is a vastly underated PF song. I've enjoyed the box set tremendously. I would imagine the new version of AMLOR will eventuallyget the stand alone release it deserves for the fans that can't afford the box set.

    I love the remix. I can think of quite a few 80s albums that could stand to have all the gated reverb removed. (I'm just as guilty, when I was a musician back then and used new tech, 99 percent of the time I went overboard.)
    My only nit picks are a drum fill that occurred 55 seconds in on the original version 'One Slip', and lowering Gilmour's classic guitar delay effect in the mix. That's a small price to pay though to have this album salvaged from the 80s graveyard.

  • @1967rcafinlandia
    @1967rcafinlandia Рік тому +1

    I like both versions. Being a child of the 80s, I have a little more affection for some of the production, albeit a product of its time, it has a certain dynamic quality that seems a bit dulled in the new mix. Also, whilst the Hammond organ may sound timeless to one generation, it actually seems a bit dated to others. I’m glad both are still available, and in the end I generally agree the new version will be remembered as more timeless.

    • @1967rcafinlandia
      @1967rcafinlandia Рік тому

      Also, worth mentioning that 80s production that so many of us roll our eyes at, is enjoying a surge in popularity with younger audiences who are enamoured by this period. I don’t think the somewhat glassy and impersonal feel of LPs such as Hound of Love or Songs from the Big Chair etc would be the same without the production they have. But nostalgia factors in as well I suppose. I do think that Division Bell is a more mature and timeless sounding record and a masterpiece as well.

    This is going to sound insane but I completely agreed with your thoughts on Lapse, until a month ago, when, after not hearing it for 35 years, gave it a second chance and really enjoyed it. It is a Gilmour solo album though, and good point about the irony with them struggling to sound Floydian without Roger. I am shocked how much I like the new Dogs of War. It’s actually a good song now! Otherwise, I don’t think the new version of Lapse is necessarily better. Nick’s playing and fills are very basic, and I was hoping for more of Wright to shine through, but I’m glad we have both versions.

    I recently discovered an interesting interview with Gilmour which took place prior to their 1987 A Momentary Lapse Of Reason tour. My favorite part of the interview involved Waters' litigation against Gilmour and Mason and his predilection for taking all of the credit for Pink Floyd's immense success.
    GILMOUR: It's a joke, he won't stop us. There is no question about it, there is not really a struggle. I mean, there is a cute idea that, uh, that I keep reading about that he did it all and he wrote all sorts of songs that he didn't write...life's too short to sit around about those sorts of things.
    IMO, this 2019 remix lifts this album above most of Pink Floyd's pre-Meddle discography and is far superior to The Final Cut. Waters could only dream of composing the melodic soundscapes contained in One Slip, On The Turning Away, and Sorrow. Gilmour was probably thrilled that he didn't have to play bass (e.g., Animals: SHEEP, The Wall: HEY, YOU) on AMLOR.

  • @Andyonplanetearth

    I grew up with AMLOR and always liked it. I do agree, retrospectively the mix does sound 80s but hey, I even needed hairspray back in those days :) ... anyway, what I'm here to say is, "Sorrow" played live on many occasions is one of my all time favourites of Pink Floyd. And above that, this song has a timeless relevancy that gives me goosebumps listening to it in today's world. I personally can't go down into a discussion between Waters or Gilmour. Pink Floyd is the work of geniuses and I love listening to Roger's "Mother" in lockdown as I love listening to David's "Sorrow" live at Pompeii. All the best to everyone.

    At the time, I liked the original release a lot more than you seemed to, although I did think the drumming was a bit "off". And I have continue to play it (or live versions of it) for all these years since the release. But I agree completely that the 2019 remix is a significant improvement, especially (to my ears) for _"Dogs of War"._
    I have always felt this *could* have been a top-tier Pink Floyd album if they had left _"Learning to Fly"_ off of the album (leaving that as a stand-alone single and video for MTV), and then shored up the rest of the songs to fit in with the themes of _"Sorrow"._ I suspect it wouldn't have taken much to get it up to the level of DSotM and WYWH, although it'd still be lacking the aggressive bite of "Animals" and "The Wall".

    I agree the lyrics have been lackluster after Waters left the band. I do see this album as a triumph for Pink Floyd though and there are some great songs on it. "Learning To Fly" is an especially good song. I also think embracing the soundscape of the 80's was a wise move for the band at the time. It gave a new generation, the MTV generation, their own Pink Floyd. It's not like they turned into "Jefferson Starship" or something. They just updated their sound and appearance a bit. Plus clearly Roger was driving them crazy. You can almost feel the weight off the bands shoulders when you watch "The Delicate Sound Of Thunder" concert. Purists knock PF for not being the same as they were but isn't that the point? Great video.
